How can I hide my hair transplant from my roommates?

I will get a hair transplant soon and I'm wondering how I can hide it from my roommates. I will be out of town for a few days so I'm not quite sure what to tell them and when I come back I'm wondering how I can conceal the surgery as much as possible; I just don't feel like discussing this with them.

It's nigh on impossible unless you plan to live under a hat the whole time.

If you already have lots of hair, you will have part of it shaved so it doesn't get in the way when they create the new hair line and implant the grafts. And that hair will take weeks or months to grow back, so you go through a period where it's all uneven unless you shave the rest too.

If you don't have much hair, you're going to suddenly have lots of new hair for a few weeks before it falls out and goes dormant for 3 months.

I told my group of friends which meant I could still socialise hatless unless we went to a pub where I'd wear a hat. I understand roommates aren't necessarily your close childhood friends but if you can tell them then you'll make your life easier.

2,000 grafts FUT Dr. Feller, July 27th 2012. 23 years old at the time. Excellent result. Need crown sorted eventually but concealer works well for now.

Propecia and minoxidil since 2010. Fine for 8 years - bad sides after switching to Aindeem in 2018.

Switched to topical fin/minox combo from Minoxidil Max in October 2020, along with dermarolling 1x a week.

Wrote a book for newbies called Beating Hair Loss, available on Amazon

This is an important question, but no one can answer it without any pics.

Even more important questions are:

- Are you a candidate at all?

- Did you select the right clinic for your case?

If you mess up the last thing, there is a risk that everyone sees that you had a HT for your entire life, not only a few weeks.

Not going to be as pessimistic as the others without knowing how big of a procedure you are having. My frontal procedures were relatively small and I could style my hair forward and to the side well enough so that no one ever noticed.

If you have enough time in advance, let your hair grow out as much as possible, and go on to amazon and pick up one or both of these concealers and do a little experimentation. They can make your hairs thicker so that they cover your scalp better, though you have to be very careful in the initial days after the procedure of course. Try applying it to the hair around the transplanted area and see if that helps you get better concealment when you comb the thickened hairs over the transplanted area carefully.

Most popular brand is toppik, but its also more expensive. The second link is to a brand that works just as good and about 1/2 the price per ouce.

hey, btw its okay... i think if tell them they will understand you

but if u still don't want they to know, i think the best way is move for a while

that last bit isn't great advice but i agree with the first. essentially it's either hide or be open and relaxed.....however big the surgery is will determine how easy it is to hide.

Good points. Don't jump ahead......let us know your current state and plans so we can understand your ability to hide it and whether you have made a good decision with the doctor etc.

That's good advice, the reason I could get away with it was long hair all over. It was just a rocky first 3-6 months due to shaving down.

You can wear a hat when you see them, or just be honest. Nothing wrong with getting an HT.

Are you getting a small 1,000 graft procedure or a 3-4,000 graft mega-session?  Are you shaving the donor and recipient?  That all makes a difference in how conspicuous one will be post-op.

Yeah I'm getting a 3500 FUT with Rahal and most of it will be done in my frontal/mid crown hair. I suppose I can just wear a hat, but I'm wondering how to conceal it 5 days after the surgery because I'm told a hat is not acceptable.

3,500 grafts will not be able to hide under a hat, even beyond a month.  Maybe just tell your roommates... 🤷‍♂️

If it was me I'd just tell them before hand and ignore them. But not everyone is equipped to do that. Do you have friends or a close friend that you can stay with for a few weeks post op? If it worries you that much can you stay in a cheap motel during this recovery stage? If that angers you with the inconvenience and costs then try and focus on that to forget about what your house mates think. In a year from now they won't even remember. All the best!

I would be telling them sooner rather than later. They will know when you reveal your new hair anyway. Impossible to keep hidden for long.

This, or take a short holiday somewhere cheap (could you visit close friends or family for a couple weeks?) in order to get through the most obvious phase of the HT (scabbing & so on). You don't really have many other options, and you can only start safely wearing a hat a week or two after the HT anyway (your surgeon will advise on this - each tend to suggest differing timeframes for hats, buzz cuts etc).
