Transplanted Temple POINTS
Dr. Glenn Charles replied to bman3082's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
I agree that the temporal areas are probably the most difficult to make look natural of all the potential recipient areas. It is critical that the angle and direction is proper. However a unnatural appearance can result when a hairline transplant is performed on a patient with both lateral hairline recession and temporal recession but the temporal regions are not addressed. Keep in mind when done incorrectly it is very difficult to correct. Do your due diligence. -
I agree that Body hair should be a last resort meaning there is no available donor hair on the scalp. I also would say that of all the areas of the body that follicles could be taken from, leg hairs in most patients would be lower on the list of potential donor sites.

Haircut after hair transplant

No worries. Once the scabs have fallen off you really can't do any harm to the grafts at that point. Just remain patient and positive. -
Graft numbers vs Surgeon ability
Dr. Glenn Charles replied to HarryHonolulu's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
I agree that the only way to compare two patients is if they have the same hair characteristics including color, thickness (fine vs course) ,straightness vs curly/wavy and obviously the same number of grafts are placed within the same size area. There can also be a difference in the result based on the angle and direction the grafts are placed which is controlled by the doctor making the incisions. -
This 70 year old male had 1571 FUT grafts placed in the frontal and mid-scalp areas in a single session. The photos show before, immediate post-op, and 1.5 years post-op. The patient is very pleased with the results and returned to the clinic to address the crown area with a second procedure. lk 1571 FUT grafts before and 1.5 year post-op.pdf

Finalizing my search, need input
Dr. Glenn Charles replied to novakia7's topic in Hair Restoration Questions and Answers
At 36 You might want to consider only doing the frontal/ hairline and mid scalp to start with. You don't want to over commit from the get go and end up having a lot of additional hair loss in the future and not have enough donor hair to really properly finish any areas started. -
This 49 year old male had 2003 FUE ARTAS grafts placed in the hairline and mid-scalp areas during his first procedure. The patient then had a second procedure 1 year later and had an additional 1213 FUE ARTAS grafts placed to add density to the previously transplanted area. The photos show before procedures, 1 year post-op from the first procedure and 1 year post-op from the second procedure. The patient is extremely pleased with the results of the procedures. sm 2003 & 1213 FUE ARTAS grafts before, 1 year post 1st SX, and 1 year post 2nd SX.pdf

Once all the scabbing is gone and the scalp skin has retuned to its normal color it is safe to use brush on scalp. I do warn patients that any original hairs in the transplanted area will be more fragile for a while and they should brush/ comb hair with caution so not to cause any unnecessary shedding.

I generally tell patients that they should wait 12-15 months before considering having a second procedure where grafts would be placed into the same area as the first procedure. I would not want to place any new grafts on top of previously placed grafts that have started growing yet. When transplanting grafts into a different area than first procedure you would only need to wait for the donor area to heal properly (6-8 months) A small touch up can be done sooner if the new grafts are not being placed in same area as original procedure.

I often explain to my patients that hair transplantation is a complicated mathematics equation. You need to know how many sq. cm of balding vs thinning area there is. How. many sq. cm of available donor area is there and what is the density/ hairs per sq. cm in the donor area. Unfortunately this is a very difficult problem to solve and it doesn't take into consideration that there will likely be more hair loss with aging. I do think that to patients with the exact same hair loss pattern but 2 very different sized heads will require a different number of grafts to obtain coverage in the balding/thinning area.

This is actually one of the more common hair loss patterns in the atypical category. I happen to see it quite often. You also have quite a bit of temporal recession also which would need to be addressed if you ever considered a HT.

Pimples in donor area and being itchy after 5 weeks
Dr. Glenn Charles replied to swanlee's topic in Hair Transplant Reviews
If it is just a few pimples they usually will go away but if you are getting several and the area appears red and tender than you should contact your ht Dr ASAP. They may prescribe an antibiotic to clear any potential infection. You can also try a shampoo that has Ketoconazole (Nizoral) in it. This often helps with the itching.
