  1. I know some of you out there have noticed peoples' eyes wandering up to your hairline before, either wondering if you're thinning or whether you've had work done. But do any of you have stories about getting "found out" by friends or families who recognize your transplants for what they are? I don't mean people who recognize you have more hair, but people who recognize specifically you've had surgery. Of course, this can either be an insult or a compliment depending on the comment and context... (for the record, no one's ever said anything to me)...
  2. Just FYI: I have contacted reps from both SMG and True/Dorin asking them to weigh in on what Jo said above regarding shaving and shock loss. I don't do this to be a pest; I do it because I had diffuse thinning in 2000 when I got my first surgery and the procedure definitely caused permanent shock loss all over. This is precisely why I've been timid for a decade deciding whether to get a second procedure. If there's reason to believe shaving will prevent significant loss, then this is a major factor for all of us in choosing a surgeon, no?
  3. I appreciate your feedback, Jo. On paper your argument makes sense. I'm wondering if there are people who have done surgeries both shaved and unshaved and have noticed distinct differences in their level of shock loss. I have looked through the archives and seen the arguments, but your statement above seemed the most assured, which is why I wanted to hear some elaboration. I'd also like to hear from reps from places like SMG and True/Dorin regarding Jo's feedback. Thanks!
  4. I wouldn't ordinarily bump a thread, but I would like to get jotronic's feedback on this. I have never heard anyone claim outright that shaving prevents shock loss. If it does, that is a major factor to consider, as there are surgeons like True/Dorin and Shapiro who actually don't require shaving. So according to Jotronic, that would mean their patients experience permanent shock loss more often than others'. Is this verifiable?
  5. That is a very strong statement - where has that been documented as true?
  6. I don't have any pics, but my scar has never been noticeable unless I wear my hair really short. Even then, you really have to be looking for it, in bright light. And even then, you have to know what the hell an HT is. When pics of Jeremy Piven's strip scar surfaced, you wouldn't believe how many people on blogs were asking what it was. A lot of people fundamentally don't even know how how transplants work and are not looking that closely at the back of your head.
  7. You can always go to one of those 'doc in the box' type places that don't necessarily take insurance but also don't charge much to simply remove staples. That's what I did anyway. The doctor was intrigued by the surgery and even said he'd always been interested in it.
  8. That is also why I will probably do my procedure with them. They have been very patient/informative with my ultra-detailed questions and my request for in-person meetups. They don't seem interested in hard sells or empty promises.
  9. Enjoying your write-ups, Corvettester, keep em coming. The acne does seem like a pain as it makes an inflamed area look even moreso, but probably only in harsh light. Have you been back to True/Dorin for followups?
  10. I would say mine was middle ground. If you look close in the light it can look transplanty. On the other hand, it's permanent and I've kept some semblance of a hairline from age 24-35, while friends around me have lapped me in terms of baldness. I will probably get another procedure this spring to firm things up, while still using Toppik. So yeah, it helped rescue some of my time as a twentysomething, but it wasn't so dramatic I felt like I was strutting around with a lush head of hair. Gotta take the good with the bad.
  11. Gotcha. Maybe someone else can speak to specific rates. The docs I've seen here in NYC are between $3-5 per graft.
  12. Everyone is going tell to you this, but I'll just say it - do not choose a doctor because of cheap rates on grafts. Choose him/her because they have an impeccable reputation and impeccable results. Even if it means flying to another country to have your procedure - do it the right way.
  13. The transplanted hair won't likely fall out, but what about the hair around it? Are you positive your balding has 100% finalized? Is the transplanted hair from your 3 procedures enough to cover your head (could you post a pic)?
  14. I met with Dr True last week who said it definitely was not, so long as the donor hair was medium-length and the recipient area was not too dense with hair already and/or was kept modestly short.
  15. I think the link you posted was for you, the logged-in author. The public link is this - Hair Restoration Social Network - Hair Loss and Transplant Photos Looking good btw!
  16. Interesting. When I met with Feller he said he shaved all patients with any length of hair. Also as hair_me_out said, did you have photos?
  17. Looking great! Just curious, didn't you have to shave your head for the initial procedure? Just wondering how you manage for your co-workers not to notice....
  18. It looks like every blur filter in Photoshop's arsenal was used in this pic. He looks like something from Madame Tussaud's museum.
  19. Part of going through surgery is having a good attitude and maintaining some rational perspective, plus not obsessing about what others think. Joemomma, it's good to see you taking this approach as you''ll be much happier in the long run. Good on ya.
  20. MD04 - how did you know discussion of Dr Shapiro was even happening in this forum? Even though it was your family members, not you, who got the procedures awhile back, you still frequent this particular hairloss forum? Can I ask why?
  21. I've just curious, is it really possible to tell from the pics alone that this isn't going to turn out to be a fine result? Maybe evaluating again after 6 months is a better idea before going the route of lawsuits, etc?
  22. Sounds like you didn't like his general patient care, but what exactly are you worried about procedure-wise? That the grafts won't grow? Because that can be true no matter what doc you go to. Just curious what's most got you concerned.
  23. Note to self: get a sex change, get Canadian citizenship.
  24. He has 10 times my hair and he sleeps with models. He's not getting my sympathy!
