Advice for Hair Loss Sufferers Considering Hair Transplant Surgery

My Story

  1. This patient had a total of 2,485 grafts done over two sessions in the crown area with a Follicular Unit Strip method. Photos shown below are pre op, and 1 year post op after his second procedure. Before: After:
  2. Preoperatively, the patient was extremely devastated by his hairloss and especially his lack of symmetry, which obviously led to uncomfortable stares and questions. Patient is a national radio talk show host and also does small amount of TV. He would always wear a hat to cover his hairloss. We started his restoration in November 2013, and completed his surgery in 2015. I spoke with the patient just last week and got permission to use his story. He is extremely happy and satisfied and may return for additional follow up photos. Patient came in October 2013 for an evaluation of hairloss that he suffered after craniotomy and radiation therapy for brain tumor. He had been evaluated previously by 2 other Bay Area physicians and told that he was not a candidate for hair restoration. His recollection was that he was told the hair would not grow due to the condition of the scalp following radiation. After exam and planning, I proceeded with a multiple session procedure so as to maximize graft survival, naturalness of results, and as much coverage as possible. In the first two procedures, we transplanted 4505 grafts (session 1 was 2400 grafts; session 2 was 2105 grafts). The first two sessions were 6 months apart. Initially, I told the patient that we would not have enough donor for the crown, however, when the patient returned approximately 10 months after session 2, he said he was mostly satisfied with his hairline, frontal scalp, and mid scalp density, but he was really bothered by his bald crown. We did 1645 grafts in session 3 with the majority (approximately 1145 grafts) to the crown and left posterior mid scalp and left parietal areas. Before: After Session 1: After Session 3: Before: After ONE session: After THREE sessions: Before: After ONE session: Before: After ONE session: After THREE session:
  3. Hair Transplant Sessions: 1 Grafts Implanted: 3111 Baldness Class: 5 Surgical Procedure: Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT/Strip) This 30 year old male gentleman came to AHR with AGA NW 5/6. He had a FUT 3111 procedure to restore his hairline, frontal, and bridge areas. His after photos are taken 9 months post-transplant. Before: After: Before: After: Before: After:
  4. The truth is that both techniques provide refined and natural results, but carry their own specific pros and cons. I encourage you guys to take some time to read the article below and share with anyone considering getting a hair transplant. Should I have An FUE Hair Transplant or Strip Hair Transplant?
  5. This patient had a total of 2,113 grafts done over one session with Follicular Unit Strip method. The grafts were planted in the following areas: Hairline, 600 grafts Frontal Scalp, 600 grafts Mid Scalp, 413 grafts Right Temple, 200 grafts Left Temple, 200 grafts Right and Left Parietal, 50 grafts each Photos shown below are pre op, and 11 months post op.
  6. A 54-year-old Caucasian male who had extensive hair loss from front to crown. His hair is coarse, wavy and gray. He has very good donor hair density (87 follicular units per square centimeter) and good scalp laxity. He underwent 1 session of FUT, the amount of grafts is show below; 1-hair = 366 grafts 2 hair = 1933 grafts 3 hair = 1,232 grafts 4 hair = 384 grafts A total of 3,915 grafts (9,464 hairs) were transplanted at the front towards the back until the grafts were run out. Below are photos of before and after surgery (4 months & 2 weeks). He has very small donor scar. The patient is very satisfied with the result and he will undergo another session to fill in the crown. We will keep you update of 1-year result of this patient.
  7. I would like to start off by truly thanking all the people of this community and all the information this group has provided for a countless number of folks suffering with hair loss and now a little about me. I am 30 years old and started loosing my hair in my early 20's and thanks to this forum and modern medicine I managed to save a lot of my hair with Propecia and a few other regimented drugs. My primary hairloss is in the frontal region and that will soon be filling in nicely thanks to Dr. Jerry Cooley in NC. Like many young people looking for answers to an age old problem I started with google and found many places to research and learn the options now a days when dealing with hairloss. I floated on this forum and several others for 3 years reading and searching and rereading about every surgeon I could find it seemed. It was thanks to this LONG dedicated research and LOTS of reading that I believe I narrowed my search to one of, if not the finest hair transplant surgeon around. I didn't just read posts and peoples opinions I looked at photo after photo until I almost drove myself mad. After all, letting someone alter your physical appearance for the rest of your life is truly no small choice. Mostly, it was not just the final result and fullness of the transplanted hairs that concerned me but since I decided to go strip I had the donor scar to think about as well. As many know some of the horror stories from strips gone wrong have probably given a lot of folks anxiety about it. So after all the research the calls the asking advice from many, many people I decided to go with Dr. Jerry Cooley and as many of you have known or read he has an amazing reputation and true passion for what he does. He really is a great guy and also I liked the fact that the guy doing my procedure had been in the same position I was putting myself in. There is a comfort in that. My procedure took around 10 hours I would say since I got in around 4-5 movies during the procedure. The strip removal portion I can honestly say I do not remember one bit thanks to a friend of mine named Valium. I laid on my face, passed out, and woke up when they were leaning me back up and flipping me around to start the recipient sites. All in all a easy day for me and a long day for Dr. Cooley and his staff. Dr. Cooley was in the procedure the entire time minus a few short breaks to rest his hand and to let me have some lunch. Brandi and Dr. Cooley are a well oiled machine and all the folks that work with him make the entire operation quit enjoyable.. I am now 11 days out from my procedure with Dr. Cooley and I can honestly say besides sleeping propped up for the first few nights specifically the two nights right after my surgery, the process had been a smooth one. I have not had to take any pain medication and the only thing I can say I still feel today is a slight bit of tension in the back of my head, but after having a strip of your scalp cut out and closed up, I don't consider that odd. Dr. Cooley and his staff did VERY clean work and besides the redness not a soul would have noticed the work. Now, I do tend to go above and beyond anytime I do anything so for sleeping at night I bought a soft neck brace and slept in it to keep my head upright and lessen the odds I fell asleep and wacked my head. The neck brace along with a recliner and a few pillows made the sleeping not all that terrible for the first two nights and a couple tylenol PM. I had some slight swelling in my forehead and on the bridge of my nose that lasted maybe 2 days and went away but this swelling was still very slight. I also opted to go back to Dr. Cooley's office for a 1 week follow up to have them wash my hair and I am glad I did cause I would have never scrubbed my head as hard as they did for fear of knocking out a graft just from my own paranoia. Today as I write this, my recipient site is only slightly red and that is almost completely gone at this point. My girlfriend also states that finding the incision to place the cream on it for post op care would be almost impossible if it wasn't for the sutures she could see and feel to find it. I will be posting some photos shortly as I am writing this before I head out to the girlfriend's company christmas party. If anyone has any questions feels free to message me and asking anything you would like. If your hairloss is bothering you and you just aren't sure where to turn this community is filled with amazing people to help you along the way. I can only say I wish I had pulled the trigger on getting my hair fixed so much sooner. And now....I begin the waiting game! Thanks, G oh, and my graft count was around 3300!
  8. Just wanted to update as for the people who are looking into a 2nd surgery. I recently ha a Strip with Dr. Dorin in nyc to correct the last strip I had with Epstein and was not at all happy with years ago. The procedure went great and the progress is nice. I will try to upload pics but want to hide face as know others looking on site. I could not have been happier and the healing was amazingly fast. I had a bump as the first procedure was not as good - even though he touts himself as a plastic surgeon, I felt that Epstein did not care at all and was barely in the room. I also had stitches rip a bit the next night and was the worst decision to go to FL for surgery even though was cheaper than his nyc quote. I developed a significant scar and the Florida office was of no help. Getting this new one over the scar with Dr Dorin was amazing. No bleeding and my scar is less than before and healing quick. Following his post treatment method so far and all hair feeling better and thicker with his regimen. I'll get pics up as it grwos more but just want to say for those who are on the fence to do another one - I highly recommend dr Dorin and he came through perfectly! Cant say enough about post op follow thru as cleaning scar and ointment so important. Also using sulfate free made redness go away quicker -
  9. This female patient previously had an FUE procedure to address her receding hairline caused by MPB. The first procedure focused primarily on the hairline, which is now very solid and intact, and this followup procedure is focused on the top, corners, and the area behind the hairline. Due to temporary nerve pain in the donor area after the patient's first FUE procedure, she opted for FUT/Strip for the second procedure. 10. Hello All, I am considering a hair transplant with Dr. Lindsey (McLean, VA). He recommended doing Strip rather than FUE given that my loss is not excessive, and the strip would allow for an additional future procedure if I need it, whereas FUE would leave the donor area almost incapable of being used for future procedures. Is this accurate? I am concerned about the scarring with Strip, is it very evident if I cut my hair short? Any insight would be very helpful, I know Dr. Lindsey is one of the best but I would still like to know from people who have had multiple strip and FUE procedures, thank you in advance!!

  13. So I had my consultation with dr feller about a week ago and he proposed 1800 fut grafts,he did say my donor is good..I feel we see eye to eye so far and I do realize/plan for further surgery givin my age, I am on finasteride for about 20 months and I think it has helped me keep some hair and I think the crown has benefited and I'm content with it for now..ultimately I'm looking for results that I feel comfortable with my hair again..I've been living with hats and bandanas for years now and worse part of that is I'm not really a 'hat guy' and never was so I'm always questioned about it and I've grown weary lol..so the plan Is to get me a hairline again and fill in all that mid-frontal area as my front little tuft/island is still good but behind it is very thin (I do wish I took out my phone and snapped a few shots of the hairline he proposed but o well) so if anybody has any thoughts/opinions if this seems like enough I do appreciate any input and my apologies in advance if this isn't the best write up but I never was the most attentive to details honestly in a perfect world I would ask two questions to a ht dr 1.will it work 2.how much

  16. A 26 year old University student was extremely distressed with Male Pattern Hair Loss. He opted to do hair transplant surgery at our clinic. Follicular Unit Transplantation was performed using the strip method. 2870 FUG were added to fill in the frontal area extending into mid scalp. The crown was beginning to thin. Patient requested to add 50 grafts to the thinning area. Patient was happy at the end of nine months and grateful for the change that had boosted his morale. one hair grafts - 739 two hair grafts - 2070 three hair grafts - 61 Total number of grafts = 2870 Total number of hair 5062 follicles.
  17. Dr. Friedman performed a strip transplant on a 50 yr. old male with minimal to no hair on hairline, temples, vertex & crown. Patient’s desire was the increase the fullness of his hair in his front and mid scalp. Dr. Friedman artistically redesigned and successfully transplanted 3104 grafts into sparse areas starting from front hairline and working his way back. 535 one hair grafts were placed in hairline and temples. 2569 group follicular units placed in frontal, mid, and vertex. Dr. Friedman used custom blades and strategically placed each follicular unit at the correct angle and direction creating the patient’s transplanted grafts to grow in a natural pattern. Photos show patient's 1 year results.

Patient was extremely impressed with the pencil line scar at the donor area. one hair grafts = 676 two hair grafts = 2734 three hair grafts = 278 Total number of grafts = 3688 Total number of hairs = 6972
  21. This patient came to Dr. Arocha in his mid 30's. He wanted to restore the frontal third. He underwent a 3023 FUT (strip) procedure. The after photos are taken at six months. No work was done in the crown. There are also some photos that depict the patient immediately post-op. Click HERE for a complete album.
  22. Heyo all! So I never posted a thread dedicated to my HT immediately post-op, as I made the decision to gather some pics documenting my journey first. But now that I'm 2 Months out, it's time to get this show on the road! My hair story is probably like many others before me. I used to have a perfectly straight immature hairline that was dense and coarse as a mofo. I NEVER thought I'd have MPB, as my Mother's side is pretty set with hair, and while my Father is about a NW4, HIS father died with a full head of hair (NW2 max). Add the fact my hair characteristics are completely different from my pops (his hair is very fine, straight and oily), I was totally blindsided by Mother Nature. At first it started off maturing normally at the temples, and I'm cool with that, I think certain hairstyles look badass with a slight widows peak/forelock. But then I started getting diffuse miniaturization across my frontal third. At that point I was all "Hell no Mother Nature, no take backs!" So I researched for about 7 Months and I finally joined forces with Dr. Feller to help bolster my retreating troops. The Op itself was pretty easy, the anticipation and waiting was the worst part. Maybe it's just me, and I don't think I'm particularly tough, but I've honestly had worse pain from dentists doing a routine filling. And even then I usually just power through it. Anyway, the staff was friendly and talkative, and Feller walked me through what steps he was taking during the process (the cauterization laser is cool), except for when he got in the zone to make all the recipient incisions/slits. Like I said before, the process as my tiny little hair buddies were dropped into their comfy head holes wasn't painful, but the waiting game was! Anyhoo, after lunch from a local deli and my post-op briefing I was set to go! On the drive home, the local anesthesia wore off and my forehead felt like I had crazy sunburn, but that was the worst of it. Sure the staples were kinda uncomfortable, but that's to be expected when you have metal keeping your skin from flapping around. I slept sitting up right, popped the Vicodin and went to work the next day. Overall it's been a great Adventure, and I'm comfortable with the idea of doing it again in the future. Now what most people are probably waiting for: PICTURES! Pre-Op Post-Op: Day 1 Post-Op: 2 Months There are more pics in my photo-album with descriptions and whatnot! Currently I'm taking Biotin, Strontium/Calcium, Multivitamin, Vitamin E and D2. Also applying 5% Minox spray/liquid before bed. Cheers!
  23. This patient came to Dr. Arocha in his late twenties. He desired to restore the frontal third. He underwent a 3005 FUT procedure to the frontal third. No work was done in the crown. He is currently on a medical regimen of Propecia. The after photos were taken one year after his procedure. Click HERE for a complete album.
  24. I'm months after my HT and it seems like I can still feel small pieces of stitches in my donor area. I'm assuming that's what it is. I suppose maybe it could be scabs or something else hard, but I'm pretty sure it's remains of the stitches I had. Has anybody else experienced this?
  25. Just back from BHR clinic Megasession with Dr Bisanga in Brussels. Strip procedure as follows: Total grafts: 4889 1 Hair: 926 2 Hair: 2038 3 Hair: 1403 4 Hair: 522 Time in chair: About 10 hours. Overall experience: Very positive. I researched for some time before choosing, and at this time feel I made the right choice. My photo album is here, containing pre and post procedure photos I had a lot of grafts. I explained to Dr Bisanga that I didn't want to get a lot of procedures, but would prefer to get as much done in one sitting as possible as I basically just want to get back on with my life. Having the procedure causes too much disruption for me. Initially he said 3500-4000 grafts would be all that was possible, but on the day I was shown to have very good laxity and more was possible. I'll post pictures of the donor area in a few days once I've got someone to take the photos. Considering the length of the procedure I don't feel too bad, but I'm pretty tired. The post-op photos where taken about 18 hours after the procedure.
