been thinking real hard about going through with a HT lately

for those who have done it , are you happy with your results?

happy is subjective, let me put it this way.

do you still feel bald or you feel like you are pretty close back to pre hair loss days?

i know a lot of it matters depends on your current loss status, physiology and hair characteristics but i just want to get an idea if you truly feels like you got most of your hair back or is it just better than before and still not quite back to pre loss levels?

a little bit about myself

im probably a NW III , thinning overall but still got most of my hair to cover with concealers. im in my late 20s, wants to achieve to probably 90% of my pre-loss look.......

-Updates after reading 1st page of response:

Thanks for all that responded so far

i want to make one thing clear

when i say 90% of pre loss day looks. i am referring to the areas that you are thinning or balding and getting implants on

i understand HT is basically moving hair from your donor area to where it's been lost so obviously you can never achieve back to 90% of pre loss hair total counts

also in terms of overall density and thickness, are people happy or do you still feel some what bald especially under lightning or wet. of course this also depends on your level of loss and number of grafts implanted.....so if you specify the details that would be great

Great thread, hope it takes off. Very interesting especially for those of us thinking about going for the procedure...

2,000 grafts FUT Dr. Feller, July 27th 2012. 23 years old at the time. Excellent result. Need crown sorted eventually but concealer works well for now.

Propecia and minoxidil since 2010. Fine for 8 years - bad sides after switching to Aindeem in 2018.

Switched to topical fin/minox combo from Minoxidil Max in October 2020, along with dermarolling 1x a week.

Wrote a book for newbies called Beating Hair Loss, available on Amazon

I understand what you are trying to achieve with this thread and poll , however I'm worried you may be setting yourself up for a disapointment .

HTs , if done properly with a top world class surgeon can be life changing for the better , but you will struggle to find any HT patient who has regained 90% of his hair , HTs are about the ......................... ILLUSION OF DENSITY .............

All you are going to do with a HT is ............ REDISTRIBUTE WHAT HAIR YOUR HAVE LEFT AND STABLIZED ON MEDS OVER THE BALDING PARTS OF YOUR HEAD .............

Sorry for the caps lock but this is a very important part of understanding what can be achieved , my two HTs have made me very happy so far , I have control of my hairloss and taking back control is what make most people happy about keeping a hold on there hair .

My hts have given me back my freedom of chioce over my hair style , which I feel was always part of my identity , but I still only have , approximatly 75% of my hair , no where near 90% , I had lost about 50% of my hair when I had to accept I was going bald , meds helped regain 25% , the rest was redistributed over the thin areas by Dr Feller .

Two HTs and meds , bit of styling wax and my hair looks thick and cool again , even when it was long , this is all an illusion buddy , but still better than being bald or thinning and losing the control over hair style .

Please don't expect 90% of your pre loss look , you will be setting yourself up for disapointment .

I have voted and I hope this helps bud

I am very happy and would do it again (in fact I am going back for more, not because I need it but because I had a great result the first time). I voted for the first choice because it fully met all of my expectations. Your expectations have to be realistic........you can't fully restore your full per hairloss look ( unless your loss is very slight). You can definitely make a huge difference.

Am I happy? Yes. But it took me two procedures to be happy and a third to be very happy. Make sure you understand that once you get your first transplant you are signing up for a lifetime of transplants to keep up with the inevitable future loss. Also, you will not get even close to 90% of your pre-loss hair. But if you get a great transplant it may look like a full head of hair under most lighting circumstances. That depends on a lot of different factors and you really won't know how well it's going to turn out until you get one. It's a risk for sure but I look better now (6 years into this battle against hair loss) than I did before. Just make sure you are mentally and financially prepared for the long haul.

I think a lot of NW3's who go to top docs achieve 90 percent of their pre-loss look (assuming you are not talking about a juvenile hairline.)

I don't have a lot of personal experience but the matured transplant I saw at my consult, the guy looked like he had never had any loss, and he started out as a 3. There is a difference in having 90 percent of your hair placed and 90 percent of the look.

Savehair,

Forgive me if I am mistaken, but I think you might still be missing the point of what people are telling you. A hair transplant will never give you the ACTUAL density (hair count), or even 90% of it, you had in your recipient area (where the transplanted hairs go) before you lost hair there. Rather, a well performed hair transplant can make it APPEAR that you have not suffered significant hair loss in the recipient area. Why? Because before we start to lose hair from a given area, the average male has approximately 80 - 100 follicular units per square centimeter (FU's per cm2) of scalp. Hair transplants as practiced today generally provide somewhere between 35 - 65 FU's per cm2, depending on donor supply, hair characteristics, extent of loss, and the region(s) being transplanted -- usually higher FU's per cm2 in the hairline zone, but using only single hair follicular units (so lower total hair count), with fewer FU's per cm2 farther back, but often with 2 and 3-hair FU's, which enhances the hair count per cm2. In other words, current technology and technique does not permit transplantation of 90 - 100 FU's per cm2 with acceptable yield (90%+), even if you had sufficient donor supply to attempt it and could be assured you wouldn't need more donor hair for further hair loss in the future.

But the good news is that men can lose quite a bit of their native hair from a particular region (thinning) before it becomes cosmetically noticeable. Generally speaking, it is said that you can lose 40%- 50% of your hair in a particular region before it becomes cosmetically noticeable. The area will start to appear noticeably thin once this threshold is passed. A well executed hair transplant can return that region to the cosmetic density threshold (sometimes beyond, depending on circumstances), and with modern implantation techniques, such as lateral slit and close attention to hair angulation, get the most cosmetic benefit out of the transplanted hairs and make the region appear even denser than it actually is. This is what is meant by the ILLUSION OF DENSITY. You will not obtain the ACTUAL density you had in your recipient area before you started losing hair there, or even 90% of it, but you can obtain a sufficient cosmetic illusion of density in your recipient area that the average eye will be "fooled" into perceiving that this person has not suffered significant hair loss there.

I hope that helps.

ahh, thanks Pup for the explanation, that makes a lot of sense and i understand what you and previous posters are trying to say now . just wondering though, when you say cosmetic illusion of density, can that be jeodardized when your hair is wet or in certain situations?

in other words, post HT, do you still feel your head of hair is thin or bald just that it doesnt appear so? does it feel like it's full?

PupDaddy gave a great reply. I am definitely not bald now after three HT's. I do have a thin or "balding" crown that I use dermmatch to cover. My frontal third and mid scalp at its worse will look thin - depending on the lighting. But most people assume I have a good head of hair with slight temple recession.

This is the best time for you to keep away from chemicals and go for herbal treatments. This really worked for me and no side effects.

this will really help you to get back your hairs, but its a slow process.
