How bad is the hair density at my scalp? Im only 22

Im 22 years old and Ive been noticing a decrease in hair density over the last 2-3 years. I had recently shaved my head at the suggestion of my barber to assess the situation better, and I found that things were worse than expected. I've been to a dermatologist and they told me to take some blood tests before starting in PRP treatment. Could someone help me understand whether that would actually help? Or is minoxidil the only solution I have (don't want to start finasteride due to the side effects). And could you also give your opinion on how bad the hairloss is at the top/sides? I seem to be having very little frontal recession but just overall loss of hair density. I was also not eating healthy over the last 4 years (only junk food and skipping meals every now and then), but I've started eating better and taking some biotin supplements too.

At this early stage I would forget PRP. You need to considered meds such as finasteride and to a lesser extent minoxidil? If you are concerned about possible side effects from finasteride then you can always in conjuction with your doctor start at a lower titrated dose.

You likely need to be on oral finasteride and topical finasteride. The chances of side effects from oral finasteride are a little less than 5%, based on published research. If you're getting side effects from oral finasteride, titrate down and/or consider topical finasteride.

Is it possible to use just minoxidil to stop the hairloss? And based on your opinion how far along the baldness chart do you think I am?

ypu have diffuse thinning.

hard to know how quick it will progress.

What is your relatives hair like?

On my mothers side no one has had significant hairloss untill they were in their 50s but on my fathers side a few started going bald by their 30s.

Looks diffuse when short, but thick grown out. Are you on medication?

No medication so far, just some biotin supplements. I used to think my hair was fine as I'd never shaved/cut it extremely short before.

You would definitely benefit greatly from Finasteride looking at your hair both long and short.

I went to a dermatologist today and he's prescribed topical fin and 5% minoxidil (he did mention oral fin would be better). Hopefully this should work.

You found the two things that WORK, finasteride and to a lesser extend minoxidil. You have done well to be in front of this at 22 :) I was still trying different shampoos 20-24, so lost time had I been as wise as you. 10 years later, I am no worse off than 24 at least ;)

Well done. The two real scientific options that can help not only stabilize hair loss but also to a degree help regrow some loss. Stay vigilant in using these and stay in touch with your doctor who prescribed them. 👍

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I have one other doubt - I plan on using the ducray anti-hairfall shampoo before applying the solution. This should help increase the effectiveness right? And would it be just as effective to take a larger dose of it once a day than take 2 daily doses of 1 ml each?

I wouldn’t waste your money on shampoo that makes false claims to be ‘anti hair fall.’ Stick with the meds religiously and follow your doctor’s advice. If he recommended to take oral minoxidil then I would have gone with that (much less time consuming). However stay with what you are on. If you start introducing too many variables you won’t know what is doing what? All the best!

Agree, sadly none of these products have been shown to do anything.

A staple for a large number of people, worth considering in my opinion, is an anti-dandruff/anti-fungal shampoo once or twice a week -  ketokonazole (1% or 2%) or piroctone olamine (1%) containing shampoo. Over using it makes your scalp dry, so less is more. Other than that, any shampoo and/or conditioner you like is a green light!

Sadly, all those ads about anti-hair fall are just bogus.

You have diffuse thinning and it looks like you're likely to lose everything on top down the line. Diffuse NW5 or higher for sure.

getting on minoxidil and finasteride should stop that right?
