Doc recommended FUE, not FUT

Recommended Posts

I have been visiting top docs recommended on this site about my mpb hair loss. Recently l had a doc say that l am a better candidate for FUE, NOT FUT, due to my donor supply (laxity is not an issue). I was surprised by this because l thought it was usually the other way around. Any thoughts about this?

Impossible to know what this particular doctor is thinking, but it could be that he sees your hairloss as being very minimal and wants to recommends the less invasive surgery.

I am a patient and representative of Dr Rahal.

Honestly, it all depends on the person. If you don't have a lot of scalp elasticity, FUE may be the better option for you. I would suggest speaking to the physician who recommended FUE over FUT/strip and ask them why.

Best wishes,

Bill

I asked the doctor why he recommended FUE and his response was “my fine hair provides low quality donor supply”. I asked if FUT was an option and he said no, he will not perform an FUT on me.

He is a very credible doctor on this site with outstanding results. However, l found him to be very insistent and dismissive with my questions. I did not feel comfortable asking more questions regarding this because it appeared that he had his mind made up....which is what has led me here for further clarification.

Could be, but l have been quoted approximately 2000 grafts minimum for my frontal third by each doctor l have seen. All other doctors l have met with anticipate continued progressive hair loss and minimum two surgeries, so maximizing my donor supply is important. My understanding is FUT is better in this regard.

is he a doctor who does primarily fue? if you did not feel comfortable asking more questions that isn't somebody you want as your doctor so get further consults and see if other doctors feel the same way. It is possible as well besides the donor laxity issue that others have brought up, that the doctor feels due to your hair type that maybe he can cherry pick better grafts thru out your scalp than that which would come out in a strip alone. Ie maybe your strip wouldn't bring in enough multi hair grafts and he feels he could do better grabbing exactly what he needs vs taking what the strip gives him. I don't think that's a common case but given how he said your hair was very fine, that could be possible.

Hold on, he said “your finer provides low quality donor supply”?

That is a problem. Finer hairs, weaker hairs probably have a harder time surviving FUE and yielding better with FUE. That’s what some docs apparently are not mentioning. Can you take a pic of the donor?

What did the other surgeons you consulted with recommend? It's fairly common for different surgeons to have different opinions on how you should proceed as they each may take different things into account. Who knows, maybe this surgeon simply feels more comfortable performing FUE and thinks he can give you the best results that way. Regardless, it's one persons opinion as opposed to however many more that (seemingly) recommended Strip, so you have to take that into consideration.

The bigger question here is which doctor you feel more comfortable with and which one's recommendation more closely aligns with your goals and what you're looking for. If you feel more compelled to go with FUT and that's also what the other surgeons recommend, I would go that route. Also, I think having a good rapport with the surgeon and feeling comfortable asking as many questions as you'd like is extremely important, so if you felt like he wasn't willing to have an open dialogue with you, that would concern me more than the fact that he recommended FUE.

I am a patient advocate for Dr. Parsa Mohebi in Los Angeles, CA. My views/opinions are my own and don't necessarily reflect the opinions of Dr. Mohebi and his staff.
