dollasign Posted August 13, 2015 Share Posted August 13, 2015 Hey all, I had 2,000 grafts about 2.5 months ago from a board recommended surgeon. Some days it is significantly more red/pink than other days (it is fairly red in this pic as I had just gotten out of the shower). I am wondering if this redness is normal and if there is pock marks/disfiguring starting to appear in the scarring of my recipient area. I can never tell if that is what I'm looking at or if I am being my own biggest critic. Also any tips to minimize their appearance would be appreciated. Thanks! Your skin and hair is kind of like mime in that pic so the redness will eventually normalize. I'm serious. Just look at my face. My Hair Regimen: Lather, Rinse, Repeat. The subsequent ones subsided within a few weeks. That said, this looks nothing out of the ordinary. I think you're ok. Senior Member shanson Posted August 14, 2015 Senior Member Share Posted August 14, 2015 I stayed red for 4 months or more. It does settle so i you should not worry about it. I know when i was a few months into it i was always worrying about every little thing. On a daily basis i kept looking even though i knew i had a long wait. I am now 7 months and theres a big difference. It honestly feels like longer but come month 4 things picked up. you look just like i did at the stage. Theres this pinkish/discoloration along the recipient site and it is not fading. I've tried witch hazel and a little bit of aloe. My recipient area looks like yours. A little strange that your doc would say the redness should be over now, but I've read many times how redness can linger on even up until a year. Plus you have hair to put over it. I'm at a similar stage post-op and still have a comparable amount of redness. It isn't ideal but we just have to let the scalp heal itself. Make sure you're following his/her post-op instructions "to a T" as well. Having said that ... This all looks pretty normal from what you've posted. The redness normally does subside fairly quickly, but it can linger. Guess you are one of the lucky ones. At 2.5 months, it's honestly probably more of an indication of healing tissue (which is a good thing because you want that good, new blood flow to the grafts) than it is irritation from the surgery. But either way, it doesn't appear overly concerning. And it seems like your doc confirmed this! Best of luck! Keep us updated on your progress. I recommend the same as far as shampoo and cr?me rinse products because many commercial shampoos have a lot of chemical and alcohol based additives which can potentially further irritate the scalp. I usually go to a beauty supply store such as "Sally's" which is a chain store with multiple locations. If there is not a Sally's in your area, then try asking your hair stylists where a local beauty supply store is because supply stores have the largest line of products. I try and avoid buying from the styling salons because they are usually much more expensive than the supply stores. The doctor said my donor area was very good. One thought I have as to why it's growing in faster might be due to the sides of my hair and the back always grow out much faster than the top ever would.
