FUE Vs FUT

Hi,

Can I check my understanding on the difference between the two techniques FUE and FUT?

am I right in thinking that the main difference is based on how the follicles are harvested and that the way they are inserted is the same?

So, the follicles are harvested individually or in grafts of up to 4 hairs, which leaves tiny scars behind, in the shape of a pin prick, which tends to blend in with the natural look of the scalp? As opposed to a strip which leaves a linear scar (which a good surgeon should make undetectable)? And this is the reason why it is better for those guys who like a short hair style, no linear scar.

Is this about right?

Thanks ;)

I'd suggest reading these summaries of the two techniques:

BHR Clinic - Hair Transplant Clinic - FUE, Strip and Repair Surgery - Brussels

4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013

1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018

763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020

Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day

I feel the part in bold is a big misconception. If you go to the best surgeon in world and follow post op instructions to a T, you can still scar poorly IMO. How your body heals is a huge factor in the scar. If your body produces more collagen than normal (which is not an uncommon thing), I don't think it will turn out great regardless of anything.

I have had 3 FUTs and 1 FUE with a second scheduled for November. If I had to start over again I would have never considered FUT, but the real dilemma for those not living in or near either Europe, Turkey or India is deciding where and how far to travel. I know of only one surgeon in NA who does FUE exclusively and has years of experience but after two consultations with him I decided to go overseas. For FUT, there are several that I have been impressed with based on the results posted on this forum. In my case even before the scar widened a bit after the last procedure, my scalp has never really felt normal. You do get used to the slight residual numbness and tightness, but keep in miind that it is a deep and large wound that is created and as mentioned above, there is no guarantee that the scar will be nearly undetectable in any particular patient.

Sethticles, I'm drawn more to FUT because more hair survives this way, doesn't it?

The notion that FUE is intrinsically inferior to strip in regard to yield is utter fallacy and has been obliterated by elite FUE surgeons. I consider Lorenzo's FUE results to be far superior compared to Feller, Lindsey, Carman's etc strip results. It all comes down to the skill of the surgeon and his clinic. I do believe the best FUE surgeons equal the results of the best strip surgeons. There are more good strip clinics out there than good FUE clinics currently though but with something like cosmetic surgery, it is worth it to travel to see the best.

I think that if you are content with getting a decent average result from a HT, an FUT in NA is the likely going to achieve your goal. However, if you are seeking that elusive "home run" and want to forever avoid the possibility of an ugly tight feeling scar across the back of your head, then start looking at plane fares and consider a 5-7 day trip overseas to have your procedure done by one of the elite FUE specialists.

I personally think we've reached a point where elite FUE physicians produce results on par with strip. The issue, however, is that it takes a highly dedicated, practiced FUE physician to achieve this caliber of results. Fortunately, I believe we recommend several of these surgeons on our network.
