Applied too much Minox over a long period - now freaked out!

Dear Community,

It's lovely to see so many of you having good results with minox and other methods. I however have been worried sick about the Sideeffects of 2 year Rogaine 5% Foam particularly because I realized that I've been probably using too much

I am a 27 yr old male

I've been putting about 3 medium-thick stripes worth of Minx foam on my head for about 2 years. Sometimes I skipped a few days (which I am happy about now) and most of the time i've been using it only once a day in the morning. It would probably equal a Rogaine cup full each day, sometimes even more.

The reason why I am writing and why I am worried so much is that I've been having pretty intense heart problems occasionally (palpitations, heart racing etc.) and an overall increased anxiety level for a couple of month now and I suspect it is because of the use of minox. I also feel my heart beating out of my chest regularly.

Shortly after I fall asleep or in the phase where I am drifting off to sleep it's like a switch has been triggered and I wake up with extreme heart pounding and strange vibrations all over my body. I've been also experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath throughout the day.

To judge how much I was using I will tell you that I've been buying a 3 can supply which would last me about 3 months. So it's a can a month of inconsistent but in my opinion overuse in a single setting.

On the net I've read about a few people that claim that Minox has caused them permanent heart problems and I worry that I've damaged my heart from overusing minox for this time period of 2 years.

It would be great to hear your opinion on this and also on the association of heart problems with minox. Is it likely that I've caused myself irreversible heart damage from the use of minox? Also, If I stop the use of Rogaine will the symptoms go away ? who has experience with this?

Thank you very much

It sounds to me more like anxieties are getting the best of you..however, I would see a GP to get a physical and have your BP taken as well just to be on the safe side...FYI most people who use the foam use more than the recommended amount!! Its hard not too

Not ot sound harsh but instead of worrying about it and asking for advice on a message board you need to go see a medical doctor asap. Tell him your situation and let a professional tell you what to do. It may be anxiety, night terrors, or something else... go find out!

"really worries that are not to be underestimated"

I wasn't trying to underestimate your worries at all!! Certainly you should go see a doctor!! I am just simply stating it could be anxieties!!

Of course but my appointment is on monday and I am already freaked out. I am sure the night terrors were caused by the use of Minox. Some other people had the same thing. My concern is that I continued using it from Feb onwards where I had my first heart experience because I simply didn't know that it came from the minox. Now my heart seems to have calmed down after discontinuation but its not back to normal. at least the level of constant anxiety and excessive heart pounding has gone down..

I am so scared that it caused permanent heart damage because I continued using it. what's your opinion on that? I know you are no medical professional but It would be good to hear what you think

I do know that the studies done so far are not longitudinal studies that monitor the effect of topical minox but nevertheless, the findings that topical minox increases LVM and hence increases the chances of LVH in such a short period of time are unsettling to say the least..

The reason why I am worried in my case is that I had such extreme reactions on it (when falling asleep my heart would go crazy) and that I continued using it nevertheless because I did not attribute those effects to minox. The continuing of the usage is what worries me. The thought that it might already have causes heart damage is scary. Especially because I read a few stories of people who used it and attribute their subsequent diagnoses with heart disease directly to the use. They all state that before minox use and the symtomes, they had a healthy heart and that there is no family history of heart disease. Right Branch Block abnormalities don't just pop up in 20yr olds if you know what I mean..

If you are interested I will post the results of my cardiac tests on Monday.

You may have to wear a Holter monitor for 24 hours for them to determine what is going on as an EKG or stress test might not be definitive. At this point I would just relax and be reassured that you will have some answers soon. It could be any number of things going on and not be related to the minoxidil usage at all.

As an aside I also had some heart palpitations/ rapid heartbeats and thought for sure I had A/Fib but that was not the case. Stress, drinking lots of coffee, night terrors, etc all could be playinging a role.

Let us know how things turn out. Good luck.

Heart problems have persisted. Doc made an echography and saw nothing abnormal but i am pretty certain that the problem is due to Minox.

So guys, be careful what you do with your body. I quit minox for several month now and I see no difference in my hair, I will also not start again as it is dangerous. if you check the net you see many topics about the potential sideeffects of minox and the X factor of what it can cause in the future. The stuff is NOT safe

minoxidil made me thin loads and is a pain in the bum to apply, whereas propecia is one pill and thats that, minoxidil is not worth it and is messy, its amazing that places charge alot of money for this

So what school did you get your medical degree from? Just because you have a "theory" that Rogaine has caused your heart "problems" despite doctors telling you they saw nothing abnormal doesn't mean it applies to the rest of us. I respect your decision to quit using it but to tell us all to stop because it's not safe is ridiculous.

I also understand why you reply like that. For me Rogaine was also a savior, it worked quite well and my hair was staying on my head. After I experienced the difficulties I tried blaming it on everything else but minox. At the end I did some research in medical databases and peer reviewed journals since I have a strong academic background and I found a number of relevant articles that point towards negative health consequences associated to topical minox use.

Topical minoxidil: cardiac effects in bald man.

FH Leenen, DL Smith… - British journal of clinical …, 1988 - ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Minoxidil: an underused vasodilator for resistant or severe hypertension

Safety of topical minoxidil solution: a one-year, prospective, observational study

And some more recent studies:

Long-term follow-up of men with male pattern baldness treated with topical minoxidil

All these Studies show that minox has cardiac effects namely a significant increase in LVM and this fact alone should induce people to think twice about using this stuff.

On a cautionary note I leave you all to it. I am not saying you should not use it just merely stating what is out there and what effects are possible. After all, minox is no herbal component and all medications applied long-term will have some effect on our bodies.

Lynx86,

A potential but rare side effects of minoxidil is rapid heartbeat amongst other things, but I'd be real surprised if it took over 2 years for you to develop these symptoms if they were minoxidil related. While I'm not trying to dismiss your concerns about minoxidil, heart related issues can be very complex and can be caused by many things. Also, given the number of minoxidil users on this forum, I suspect we would be hearing these types of concerns from others as well.

Minoxidil related or not, I do suggest undergoing extensive testing in order to determine the cause and a solution for your heart problems.

I wish you the best and good health,

Bill

I will have to concur with Lynx88 after 3 weeks of using this toxic chemical I was suffering heart pulpitations severe light headedness and anxiety attacks. I nearly scheduled an appointment with a psychologist. I saw my doctor at least twice to no avail before I connected the dots. Yes it might be safer for some but other people have adverse reactions.

In years of extensive hair loss research on the net i have never ever heard of these symptoms from anyone using topical minox.

I would be interested to see some links to clinical studies backing up the above made claims.

The only thing ive ever read on the subject is the above symptoms can be caused by oral ingestion of minox when it was an earlier treatment to treat high blood pressure.

The topical application apparently is just nowhere near enough to get in to the body in order to casue these sides.

Then again you could be unlucky and be in a very small % with a severe intolerance to even topical minox. Everyone is different i suppose.

It's normal that your heartbeat may increase and u can feel all the beats have more power than before u use . Cause we use vasodilation , it is not miracle that your hair loss is stop , this product ( rogaine , araklin , kirkland etc) makes your heart work hard and the area that you spread , blood vessels are getting bigger , the problem is with long term use It may cause atrial fibrilation ( 190 heartbeat/persecond) , also psychologically when u feel the first force heartbeat u are in anxiety , so you are in panic attack , your adrenaline level is increasing so your heart beats faster then u panic again and afraid that when I'll live this again , first of all you have to know that how do u take affect from using this drugs , then do not panic when ur heart beats faster , cause it's not fatal ,however fast heart beat means weak heartbeat means it cause clot , be careful and seen ur cardiologist, request holter , cause when u are in hospital ur fast heartbeat may not meet the doctor eko or ekg , ur sinus rythim may be seen good , but when u use holter , it is like ekg , records every movement of heart along day and night .

Being a female and shedding in an all over hair loss, i dislike the foam which leaves my hair looking like a scene out of "there's something about mary"

plus the costco warehouse sells six bottles of the foam for about $54.00.

I prefer the liquid with the dropper.... And guess what???? Costco.com sells their kirkland brand old style liquid with the dropper: Six bottles: Under $20!!!

Old topic but I had to register and share my experience about minoxidil...

I have had good results with minox... but after 2-3 years of use the problems started... even when I used 0.25ml minoxidil every now then then...

lol... I find this kinda funny because I had EXACTLY same side effects with minoxidil.... doctors took electrocardiogram and there was nothing... also I had dreams like im going to choke... and im sure I was short breathing when sleep... sometimes when awake during the day randomly i had rapid heart palpitations... like FLIMMER... doctors gave me opamox because I couldnt sleep for 3 days... because every time I was going to fall sleep I woke up and had same feeling as lynx86 " in the phase where I am drifting off to sleep it's like a switch has been triggered and i woke up" .... the good thing is that when i quit minox for 3-4weeks... all problems gone... then i start minox again and palpitations start again... i have tried it 4 times like that.... i cant even use it underdosed randomly... maybe some people are allergic to it... or something happens to your body in long term use... who knows... I dont really think you will get permanent damage to your heart if you know when to quit... usually sideeffects are gone in 3 to 4 weeks.... im 36 years old healthy male.. i weight 76kg and never had any heart problems... nor high bloodpressure...or cholesterol...

I think that for some people minoxidil could somehow disturb your automated breathing system...and hearts electrical system...

at the moment I use revivogen and nizoral... just waiting something new to pop up like histogen...

PS. it`s unique... not everyone have problems with minoxidil but obviously some of us does

When i started to get good results from min i used alot for some time i also had heart beating and could hear it at night hitting my chest but i think it was not due to min but anxiety and maybe other meds.

I try not to use it too late at night and if i used more in the day i dont use it in the evening.

After over 2 years of use i now use it 1 time a day i think i've seen the amount it could do for me now it's just to help me with the hair i got.

After towel dry i put the foam in no other hair product just use min if my hair was longer i might have to use other styling products which i dont like some give me headach too.

I continue to use minox everyday and never had this issue happen again

Ive used/using, Rogaine liquid 5% on and off (mostly on) for 4yrs now..and i have to admit ive noticed some infrequent heart palpitations. (here and there) ...Im not even sure how effective minoxidil has even been for me...i started like most, when i noticed thinning...but the thinning continued anyway....i may drop it...like Djlazerblue stated "

If your getting these symptoms and you weren't before minox, stop it not worth your life"
