Regular Member izzy Posted October 25, 2011 Regular Member Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) This may seem a little random but have you noticed that most of the alcoholics and drinkers we see have a full head of hair! I'm starting to think that alcohol must have an effect on DHT or play a role in effecting the hair and that it must lower DHT somehow! What do you guys think? Edited October 25, 2011 by izzy

I'm starting to think that alcohol must have an effect on DHT or play a role in effecting the hair and that it must lower it somehow! What do you guys think? If I recall there is some evidence that alcohol has a beneficial effect on hairloss and I too have noticed that trend across quite a few alcoholics! I don't think the precise causative link has been established or proven though and, besides, I don't think I'd trade alcoholism for hairloss!
Senior Member ffar Posted October 25, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 25, 2011 Lot of Alcohol = less testosteron = less DHT
Senior Member Levrais Posted October 25, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 25, 2011 I have made the same observations and have wondered the same thing. 5700 FUE in 3 procedures with Dr. Bisanga View my patient website: http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/blog/home-page.asp?WebID=1874
Senior Member NEWHAIRPLEASE Posted October 25, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 25, 2011 I read a study a long time ago that a glass or two of red wine a day was as good as using rogaine. I would love to have a full head of hair, but I'm not gonna turn into a full blown alcoholic..Ill stick with my couple of beers a day. Ha Newhairplease!! Senior Member Blake Bloxham Posted October 25, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 25, 2011 While I'm not sure about hair directly, I do know that excessive alcohol abuse can have very detrimental effects on the integumentary system in general. This would include the skin and it's appendages (i.e. hair follicles). However, it would be interesting to see what type of effect (if any) small amounts of alcohol had on hair loss. Senior Member Sean Posted October 26, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 26, 2011 I've always thought alcohol had a negative effect on hair follicles and hair health in general. "As it is a diuretic, alcohol can dehydrate the body, making the hair brittle, dry and liable to split ends. It also depletes the body of nutrients and can cause a deficiency of the mineral zinc, which can lead to hair loss. Read more: The drinking bill your body pays | Mail Online "
Regular Member Dr. Glenn Charles Posted October 26, 2011 Regular Member Posted October 26, 2011 The negative effects of long term alcohol abuse would certainly out weight the positvive hair effects if they they even exist. Senior Member scar5 Posted October 26, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 26, 2011 Alcohol is good for your hair. Forget about dry skin and all the goodie-two shoes nonsense and just think hair and Male Pattern Baldness. First, its a vasodilater (sp???) meaning it relaxes the walls of the arteries, just like minox and it thins the blood, and best of all it leaves you with more estrogen and less androgen, like fin. All in all, its the best and most pleasant way to stave off baldness - on your way to the grave.
Senior Member Capelli11 Posted October 26, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 26, 2011 Interesting observation...if that was the case I would be drunk all day long!!! lol. Senior Member ziggy00 Posted October 27, 2011 Senior Member Posted October 27, 2011 I don't think there's any research evidence for this. While interesting, I wouldn't experiment any further than a glass of wine with dinner.
