Anyone with very aggressive familial hair loss genetics maintained more than 10+ years on Fin or Dut?

I'm referring to those amongst us who were destined to be fully bald by their late twenties. I started Fin at 17 and eventually switched to Dut and will be 22 this year. It's hard to say whether I'm below baseline compared to nearly 5 years ago however the fact that it is so difficult to tell leads me to believe that I have either maintained or barely lost more hair over these years so that's good. I do wonder whether Dut and oral min will be able to fend off my NW 6-7 by age 25 genetics until I'm 30 and there are better treatments around. It makes me anxious about the future.

I’ve been on oral fin for 17 years. Slowed but not stopped my hairloss.

Age: 40

Hairloss began at age 23.

Oral Finasteride 1mg daily since 2006, Topical Minoxidil since 2012. Hair transplant 3,400 grafts 2019. Second hair transplant 2,400 grafts in 2023.

I took Finasteride for 11 years, but I've been off it for a long time now. The first 2 or 3 years I think I had a bit of improvement. The next few years it stayed the same. The last few years that I was on it I was losing hair again and by the time I stopped I was worse than I was when I started. That was one of the reasons I stopped taking it. What was the point if I was still losing hair anyway. I was a NW 6, maybe 7 when I started and definitely NW 7 by the time I stopped.

I started fin when I was 23 at a NW 2 with recession. the first 3 years I had some thickening and then very slow loss. I am now 35 and am a Nw 3. My dad is a NW 6 and my brother who is 37 without medication is a NW 5. 2 years ago I switched to dut as I felt fin was slowly loosing the battle but it could have been in my head. If you aren’t already I would consider adding oral minoxidil. I know a lot of people are concerned with side effects but My hair thickened up when I started a year ago. Meds definitely work very well and will buy you time before something else comes out hopefully. For what it’s worth and I guess I’m a risk taker I would have started on Dutasteride and oral minoxidil at 24 years old if I would have known I wasn’t going to have side effects… I feel it is the most effective and I have no side effects. Don’t take my word but consult with a doctor.

I started Proscar/fin in 1997 then switched to dutasteride in 2001 when it was released. Presently taking oral dutasteride 3 times a week and 5mg of oral minoxidil daily. I started balding at 17, I would say I was able to keep 80 percent of my hair.
