Graft Estimate

Okay, just wondering, do surgeons overestimate or underestimate the number of grafts that they will need based on pictures?

Of my top two choices Doctor 1 has estimated 1,800 grafts and Doctor 2 has estimated 2,000 grafts.

Are decent surgeons usually pretty accurate with their estimates based on pictures? Or do they sometimes undershoot, or overshoot, by a few hundred grafts?

I don’t see any pictures.

That's a hairline model that does not include temple work. The clinic that offered me this hairline estimated 1,200 - 1,500 grafts. However, I want to do the temples which is obviously going to need a bit more.

The reason I'm asking really is because I'm trying to ascertain if it might cost me more or less money than what has already been estimated.

Ok so it does depend on the clinic, but anytime my graft count has gone over I have not been charged anything extra.

@JohnAC71 sounds like a great clinic, whats the name? for my 1st hair transplant, the doc even admitted afterwards I should have had 800 or so more grafts, and she knew that at during the surgery, but she didn't go one graft over what I had already paid. So infuriating. Doctors/Patients really should have some sort of protocol or agreement in place ex "i will pay for grafts that go over the count, etc. "

@Rossybop Doctors are human, and a photo is so subjective, every doctor is going to give you a little bit of a graft count. Additionally, some doctors are more conservative in their surgeries, others more liberal, and graft approximations will reflect that.

Wow! You would think that maybe they would measure the bald spots and use the measurements to calculate precisely how many grafts they need.

I see I see ok.

I was quoted 2,500 grafts during consultation and was ready to pay for that amount and for more in the case there was more, although I was very certain I wouldn’t need more.

on surgery day the doctor decided they would aim for 2,200 instead. They got around 2,200 but when doc finished the incisions, he wanted 200 more to fill in density, so they flipped me over and extracted another 200. Totalled 2,401 exactly, and they refunded me for 99 grafts as I paid for 2,500 before we started.

had it gone over I had a visa ready to pay for what they’ve extracted extra. I think that’s the policy for many doctors in North America at least

My advice is set up consultations with some hairline specialists. I know you have a budget, but consult with Bisanga, Feriduni, Reddy, to name a few in Europe. That way you’ll know for sure how many grafts you need to get your desired look.

I met with one clinic in person. It was HRBR Dublin, I've been going there sporadically for years to track my hairloss. They designed a hairline but it doesn't include temporal work - which I thought was astounding. They don't do temporal work there because they say it looks unnatural as you age. For their non-temporal hairline they estimated 1,200 - 1,500 grafts via FUE.

Based on pictures:

Bisanga said 2,300 - 2,500

Feriduni said 2,200 - 2,800

Saifi said 1,800

Anastasakis said 2,000.

I'm kind of just eager to know how accurate their estimates are in case I end up having to spend more (or less) than expected due to extra grafts being needed on the day of surgery.

Like, if I expect to spend €5,000 for 2,000 grafts it would be a bit of a bummer if they told me "you actually owe us €7,500" because we put 3,000 grafts in," on the day of surgery.

Based on Bisanga and Feriduni I’d say you need 2,300. Consult with Reddy as well, he’s in the UK.

Ok cool guys. Cheers. I think all the places I've asked are top quality. I'll probably go with Anastasakis or Saifi. They've estimated 1,800 and 2,000 respectively. Maybe I'll just message them and ask them what if their estimates are wrong...

How does the top of scalp and sides look? Are you just planning on having frontal 1/3 done?

There's the top and sides. I'm looking to have the hairline done, with most emphasis on the temporal points if possible.
