Senior Member milo12 Posted December 21, 2016 Senior Member Share Posted December 21, 2016 Hello everyone, I was prescribed minoxidil by my doctor. As such I did my due diligence in researching it and came to a haunting side effect of the product. It looks like it actually sheds your hair initially when you use it. It may also cause sexual side effects. have any of you who tried it experience any hair shedding and sexual side effects? Do you recommend this product? Senior Member E39 Posted December 21, 2016 Senior Member Share Posted December 21, 2016 I've been using it for years with no side effects, no shed and good results. I use it 2x a day in my crown area. I've tried all brands and have settled on rogaine foam. It's easier for me to apply than liquids. You can find good deals for it on eBay. Administrators Melvin- Admin Posted December 22, 2016 Administrators Share Posted December 22, 2016 I'm fairly certain anyone reporting sexual side effects are experiencing those side effects from other causes, minoxidil does not in anyway inhibit the production of DHT, its is merely a topical vasodilator which simply widens the blood vessels to increase blood flow, incidentally enough viagra works the same way. Minoxidil is not without side effects however some report skin inflammation, irritation, itching and other dermatological side effects, it can cause a temporary shed, but the hair that is shed comes back and then some, I've been using it for the past couple of years and I feel it has really done a good job maintaining my hair, it works by keeping the hair in the growth phase longer thus slowing the balding process significantly. Senior Member HairLostYears Posted December 22, 2016 Senior Member Share Posted December 22, 2016 +1 on the name brand foam from eBay. Sometimes in a slightly damaged box, but always with a reasonable expiration date. Still have a bunch of bottles of Spectral UHP liquid I got dirt cheap on eBay, but the foam is my usual once daily go-to lately. The liquid does irritate me a little now when used on consecutive days, although it didn't used to (perhaps just that brand). The only sexual side effect for me would be from the liquid. It sort of acts as a birth control, as the ladies are repulsed by my greasy head!
Senior Member Dolph1969 Posted December 22, 2016 Senior Member Share Posted December 22, 2016 I don't think you'll get any sexual side effects, but you will initially lose a lot of hair, n the first few weeks you start using it. This is known as initial shedding and is basically getting rid of weaker hair. Your hair may noticeably thin during this, but don't stop using it. It will grow back thicker in the upcoming months. It can be very scary initially and a lot of people stop when this occurs.

Senior Member gillenator Posted December 23, 2016 Senior Member Share Posted December 23, 2016 And remember, it will take another 3-4 months before you start noticing things thickening up because the weaker hair that was shed will go dormant. Also interesting that you stated you received a "prescription" because you can purchase minoxidl products up to 5% strength without a prescription. Usually if a doctor writes a script for a minoxidil based product, it is higher than 5% concentrate. If that was the case for you Milo, then that may also be why you are experiencing significant shedding. How often are you applying the product you are using?
