Dr Cooley 3,801 grafts

Recommended Posts

This patient is in his mid 60's and wanted to restore his frontal hair, as well as thicken the crown. We started finasteride and performed FUT: 3,801 grafts (1-779, 2-1626, 3-1010, 4-386; 8,605 hairs), placing mostly in the front but also some in the mid scalp and crown. He is shown 10 months post op. In patients with gray/white hair, we dye the hair to make dissection and placement easier.

Great to see older guys indulging themselves! Very nice look for him. I bet his dance card is full these days! :)

I've been privately chastised by a member of our community for my above comments so I wanted to post a public response in the event that anyone else finds my words offensive. If I offended, please allow me to clarify and offer my apologies to Dr. Cooley and the patient should he read this.

In my experience, many people, both men and women have a notion that hair transplant surgery is an act of vanity reserved for younger single guys who feel that they may never find a wife or girlfriend if they don't have hair. Lots of very young guys come to this forum wanting surgery and think it's okay to blow their donor supply on a juvenile hairline because they won't care what they look like at 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Cases like this demonstrate just the opposite.

I believe that most cosmetic surgery is something we choose to indulge in because it makes us feel better about ourselves and that transcends age, martial status, etc. Having recently undergone my third hair transplant as a 46 year old married father of 1, I can relate to that.

I don't want to take this thread off topic but felt I should elaborate given the private message I received.

Again, very sorry if I offended anyone.

David

I did not take your post to be in any way offensive. In fact, my thought when I read it was, "Right on!". I have a significant number of men and women in their 60's and 70's who come in for hair restoration. My oldest patient ever was 83 and he continued to enjoy his new hairline until he was 95 when I last saw him. Older patients have the same motivation as younger patients (ie look better and restore self image) and they usually have more realistic expectations.

Some of the issues in dealing with older patients include working with gray/white hair which can be challenging and they are often on several prescription medications for health issues, so we have to sometimes do things a little differently and monitor closer to make sure we keep our procedure safe. But otherwise, they heal just as well and have the same graft growth. I enjoy seeing a diversity of patients including age, gender, racial backgrounds, types of alopecia, etc.

Seriously? That's ridiculous--people need to lighten up.

Right? Geesh.

And David - Though your followup response was very thoughtful and a very kind gesture, I'm sure most people on the board understood exactly what you meant to begin with. I sure hope so anyway....

And yes - fantastic results, Dr. Cooley. I'm sure the gentleman is thrilled.
