Senior Member Jotronic Posted June 27, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 27, 2011 (edited) Artifical hair fibers are made of nylon or a similar material and are usually inserted into a patient's scalp with a "hook" type of achoring system. The fibers usually cause chronic inflammation, reocurring infection and eventual scar tissue formation. They always, eventually, need to be removed. Dr. Wong removed the fibers and after a period of healing transplanted 2000 grafts to the crown. The result shown is two years post-op. Here you can see the problems facing the patient. The fibers were extracted and this photo was taken immediately post-op. Several months later the crown was healed. And Dr. Wong placed 2000 grafts for this result two years later. Senior Member TC17 Posted June 27, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 27, 2011 Wow, that artificial hair did a number on his crown. Thankfully Dr. Wong was able to fix hiim up. The only place I've heard of offering artificial hair is India. Is that where this patient has his procedure?
Senior Member aaron1234 Posted June 27, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 27, 2011 Yikes. Artificial fibers are the stuff nightmares are made of. I remember a poster years back who went ahead and got them. Needless to say the whole board was quite shocked he did it. Wonder whatever happened to that guy. Great work in the crown. Do you think scar tissue from the fibers were a factor at all in this case? Senior Member Jotronic Posted June 27, 2011 Author Senior Member Share Posted June 27, 2011 TC17, It is (or was) also legal in Iran, Japan and at one point was legal in Italy. I posted an Italian patient result last year that also had artificial hair implants. I am not aware of where this patient had the procedure performed however. Aaron, Yes, the scar tissue was a factor. When these cases show up the doctor needs to place at a relatively lower density to insure a higher survival rate. Senior Member bonkerstonker Posted June 27, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 27, 2011 Jesus wept i just don't understand why people do stuff that clearly isn't going to work when you pre think about it but hairloss is cruel and makes us all do crazy things. Joe just out of interest is the ht result not completely full looking because of the scar tissue from the artificial hair. Am i right in thinking 2000 grafts would have a much better result on a head that wasn't scarred like that? Great change from where he has come from though he must be very pleased. Bonkerstonker! http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/blog/home-page.asp?WebID=1977 Update I'm now on 12200 Grafts, hair loss has been a thing of my past for years. Senior Member mattj Posted June 28, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 28, 2011 How long did this patient have his artificial hair for? The finished result looks very good. The area was quite large to begin with. I am a patient and representative of Dr Rahal. Senior Member Blake Bloxham Posted June 28, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 28, 2011 Jo, Thank you for presenting this case. The repair work looks good, and I'm sure the patient is pleased with the transformation. Frankly, I'm shocked any physician would perform these "artificial hair" transplant procedures knowing that he/she is implanting a foreign body that will cause chronic rejection (redness, inflammation, etc). It's a great thing to see this reversed with safe, ethical hair transplantation. Nicely done!
