  1. Unless the doctor asks you to shave your head, it is not necessary. Your like me, my thinning is just in the very front. How visible your shock-loss could be is hard for me to say accurately, thats something you should discuss with your doctor. Just think of it this way, for about 2-3 months after your surgery you won't look your best. Your hair may appear to be worse than it was before surgery. However, around the 3rd month your new hair will start to sprout and your life will start to change.
  2. shock-loss, for the most part, is limited to the areas of your scalp where you are receiving transplants or where the donor tissue is extracted. Shock-loss is caused by irritation or damage to the native hair follicles during transplant surgery. They will grow back, except in a small percent of cases where there is serious damage to the follicle. This makes it important to pick an excellent surgeon. A great surgeon will be able to minimize the amount of shock-loss you endure. Virtually everyone who has a hair transplant will experience some shock-loss. This is normal, and nothing to get frightened off about. After a couple months the shocked hairs will grow back, and not long after that your transplanted hairs will begin to grow. It is also normal to get some slight scarring and crusting on the scalp after transplant surgery. Not to worry, any scars will fade quickly and will eventually be undetectable. crust on the scalp will only last for a week or so.
  3. consider looking at Dr. Martin Tessler. He's right outside Detroit. Southfield, MI to be exact. Probably a 5-6 hour drive for you but he's an excellent surgeon and a great person.
  4. i know thats its purpose, i agree 5mg would be to much for just treating hair-loss, but i think 2.5mg might be ok and perhaps more beneficial. I'll ask my doc about it.
  5. i know it seems early to say i've seen results from finasteride. I've only been on it for a week, but im beginning to see results. no regrowth or anything crazy, but my frontal hairs seem to be darker and alittle thicker than they were before i started finasteride. so far so good i guess.
  6. ya you would be lucky to see any re-growth. Like dakota said, those products are just to maintain what you got. Hair transplant is really the only way to go if your looking to add hair to areas that are already bald. i would say you probably dont need all those products. they all do the same thing pretty much, so your kinda wasting your money getting all three. I would say go with the propecia for sure, keep the rogaine if you want, and kick the nizerol. but hey if you can afford it, then do what you feel is necessary.
  7. im not sure if thats true, but hey you could be right. what about instead of cutting the 5mg into quarters, i cut them into halfs. would 2.5mg be to much still? I know i've read some posts on here where people have stated they take more than the 1mg dosage for their hairloss. Just wondering if i would get any extra benefit from it, or if 1mg would produce the exact same results as 2.5mg.
  8. oh woops, sorry, read that wrong. I was gonna say, he must be the most gullible person who ever lived. anyway, ya even 11,000+ is alot. you probably could have got 2,000 grafts in one procedure for about 6,000-8,000 from a coalition surgeon.
  9. heres a problem with bosley, in 2 procedures you transplanted a total of 2,065 grafts right? Any honest, candid, surgeon would tell you that he could easily do 2,065 grafts in one procedure. As im sure you know, the more grafts per procedure the less you pay per graft. Therefore you paid over 22,000 dollars for two procedures where you could have gotten it all done in one procedure for 7,000-12,000 dollars. Basically bosley ripped you off bad, and you should call them and voice your displeasure. I would ask for some money back and threaten to sue them, but thats just me. Ask them why they felt it was necessary to break it up into two procedures. They wont say it, but it was so they could get more money out of you, guaranteed. That is only one of the many reasons people on this site hate bosley, hair-club, etc.
  10. Finasteride is prescribed in 1mg dosages to treat hair-loss, and prescribed in 5mg dosages to treat an enlarged prostate. However, wouldn't it be more beneficial to take 5mg finasteride to treat hair-loss? It's obviously safe to take in 5mg dosages. Seems like the more the better or is this one of those drugs where less is more?
  11. I'm trying to get my precedure done on May 12th with Dr. Tessler, may have to wait until May 20th though. I'm also an avid golfer and will be dying to get out there, but it really is better to be safe than sorry. Like you houston, my putting and chipping should get much better in the next couple months. But hey, my short game is what really needs work anyway. Killing two birds with one stone.
  12. are you referring to clinics among the coalition using deceptive photo tactics? Or do you mean the incompetents known as bosley, hair club for men, etc?
  13. Im not sure, but it might be hard to find a surgeon who would use someone elses hair, as their is an increased risk of the transplanted grafts not growing. There is also a risk of disease, because blood from your donor's follicles will come into contact with your blood. Obviously, if it's someone you know really well, the latter shouldn't be an issue. however, sometimes people carry a disease and never show symptoms, and therefore do not know they are carriers. Also, it would be hard to find someone willing to take that scar just to donate hair. i've seen scars that have healed very well, and are hard to notice, even with short hair.
  14. good luck to you sir, hope everything works out well. from the pictures i have seen dr. keene does some excellent work. im hoping to have my procedure done sometime in May as well. also never had surgery before but i will say im more excited than nervous, although, i'd be lying if i said there wasn't some nervousness. like you though, i have picked a great surgeon, and feel very comfortable in his hands.
  15. thats typical, after all it is all about money. Bosley, hair club for men, medical hair restoration all are complete garbage. they care about money, nothing else. if only more people were educated about this stuff, those hair chop shops would go out of business. Cloning is definitly the future, hopefully the greedy corporations won't ruin it for everyone else.
  16. this is the same as people who claim sexual activity also expedites hair-loss. It is completely false. it has nothing to do with your activity and has everything to do with your genetic disposition.
  17. im a class 2 as well, a rough estimate would be 800-1,200 grafts. cost is hard to determine as each surgeon has different pricing scales. At my consultation i was recommended for about 1,000-1,200 grafts at around 5-6k for the procedure. If your serious about it, do some research, find a good surgeon and set-up a consultation. The doctor will assess your situation and inform you of what can or can't be achieved. you wont find a GOOD surgeon who will do it for 1-2k. This isn't something you want to be cheap about. Go to where the expertise is not the bargain.
  18. i respectfully disagree that he is not a candidate for a hair transplant. i agree that 2000 grafts would probably be to many, but 1,000-1,200 is not out of the question. Its really a personal choice, if he doesnt want to have a receding hairline then get the procedure done. yes he may need more surgeries in the future, but he will have enough donor hair left over. plus if he starts propecia, it will only help. im kinda in the same boat, im alittle older and have slightly less hair loss, but i am going to go through with it simply because i dont want to have a receding hairline anymore. its just my personal choice. if your gonna go through with it, make sure you find a good surgeon who understands what you want.
  19. i think 2500 may be alittle much, 3500 is way to much. you have more recession than me, but ur still a class 2 like me. depending on how thick you want your transplanted hair to be, 1,200-2,000 grafts is probably what your looking at. at least thats my opinion after looking at your pictures.
  20. I haven't had my HT yet but i know that transplanted hairs SHOULD NOT recede after shockloss/shedding. The hairs that go thru shock loss just lose the hair temporarily. Remember the transplanted hairs arn't sensitive to DHT. Some people have very minimal shockloss some extensive. This probably has to do with how your body reacts to the surgery and how well the doctor preformed the surgery. I'm not sure, but it seems the less irritation/discomfort the less shockloss. finasteride is not an illegal drug, it wouldn't even be tested for. So no you will not fail a drug test from propecia.
  21. Dr. Tessler is part of the coalition. he's regarded as one of the best HT doctors in the country. He's listed in the book of "the best doctors in america". I found this website off of his website. There isn't very much about him on here, but he comes highly regarded. I've done LOTS of research. i'm not a newbie to this stuff. I have enough hairloss to where it makes sense to have the procedure. I'm young, but 24 is old enough. I have already had a few consultations with other doctors just to get some info and price ranges and stuff. I knew Tessler would be my guy all along, just wanted to see what some other doctors had to say. All said my donor hair was excellent. I'm at the age were i want and need my hair now. It doesn't make sense to wait any longer. I dont want to be married and have kids by the time i get around to having my HT. I'm not rushing, i've been thinking/researching about this for over a year. The time is right. I think i could have some excellent results as the area that needs filling is not large. I will probably only need 1,200-1,500 grafts to achieve my desired results. Which should leave plenty of donor hair should i need future surgery's. I have only one uncle who is completely bald. No one else in my family has extensive hair-loss. I have my consultation with Dr. Tessler on Tuesday, i will ask him for a proscar script no doubt. Thanks for your help and advice, i'll let you know how the consultation goes. unfortunately i dont have a digital camera so i cant post pics, atleast yet.
  22. In my opinion, unless you have a family to support, no price is to much to give you your looks and confidence back. i'm 24, started losing at 20. I'm having my HT in a month or so. We only live once, nobody should have to go through life being bald or balding. I agree with jupiter it wouldn't make sense to come out with a new procedure if nobody except bill gates can afford it. While im sure it will be more expensive than a HT, it still will be somewhat affordable, and as the years go by it will become more and more affordable.
  23. do you know of any good online pharmacys to order proscar from or should i just go to my local pharmacy to fill the prescription? proscar is covered under my health insurance, so its only a $10 co-pay for me.
  24. so proscar/propecia both stop hairloss and improve prostate health?
  25. thanks for your help. is proscar the same ingredients as propecia just under the name proscar? I'm 24, i'm a class 2 right now, but i can see it getting worse and worse. Luckily i have some money i can use to have the procedure done now. The thing is the money i'll be using is supposed to be for school, so now i will have to take out a student loan to be able to pay for the rest of my classes after my HT. Whatever though, its worth it. I wont need to many grafts, anywhere from 1,200-1,500 i think will be sufficient for now. I'll be going to Dr. Tessler, he has a great reputation in the detroit area. His estimate was only about 5-6 thousand for the procedure, seems to be a good deal. Hopefully the propecia/proscar will keep the rest of my hair from falling out.
