Dark patches :/

Hi all,

I had an HT a month or so ago. The initial month has been mixed feelings, seemed to be going just fine, but am noticing some dark patches under the skin at this point which is worrying me.

 

Would appreciate if someone could share insights. 

 

I had a chat with my surgeon who said it's nothing to worry about, however I would like some more opinions to be sure it's actually OK.

The initial photos aren't really zoomed in so i do understand if you can't objectively identify if there's an issue or not.

Who was your doctor, those dark patches seem to be hair. It looks as if thick coarse hairs were used in the hairline. It is still early, but the appearance is a little concerning. What did your doctor have to say?

I think you are talking about areas like the ones circled here in red, as compared with lighter areas of skin like the blue arrow is pointing to. That just looks to me like areas that still have some extra inflammation/trauma from the surgery. Either because more hairs were placed there or maybe there are more nerve endings, etc, so it will take longer for that fade.

If you were lighter in skin complexion, like Caucasian, I would expect it would look more pinkish or red in color. This can take weeks or even months to heal and return to normal coloring, everyone is different. Since you are a month out the grafts are secure, no need to be careful touching the areas, so if you aren't already keep these areas moisturized as dryness can make the inflammation worse. Use a lotion or aloe would be even better.

He re-assured me that all is well. actually I was looking at some photos from earlier in the month. Have attached both here, the first one is from March 11 and the next is March 26. If i look at both the dark patch is receding.

 

The doctor isn't sure why it happened, it may relate to psoriasis perhaps? He was alluding to this, but i don't think that is really possible as it seems to be all across the transplant area.

That is exactly what I was referring to - thanks for the advice. I do think it may be related to dryness, am ordering an aloe based ointment to be safe.

The odd thing is that I have transplants in the crown area as well and this issue hasn't happened there.

Don't think the doctor is mentioned on the forum. It was done in India. The doc did the transplant for two friends which is why I went with him, will know better in a few months I suppose.

 

The date of transplant was 23rd / 24th Feb, FUE 4000.

Been a bit over a month now.

I’ve never seen something like this before, did they use any dye? Sometimes dye is used in the recipient sites, I’m gonna tag @DrTBarghouthi perhaps he has more insight.

No dye was used. Just the usual, short clipping, FUE over 2 days, wait for 2 days to open bandage, look once over and ready to go.

I do have psoriasis - not sure if that is relevant, I have been shampooing daily with the advised shampoo. 

On another note - I did pass out while they were doing a test for anaesthesia, not sure it is relevant, but it has more to do with my fear of needles than anything else I imagine : )

It does look like some sort of scabbing or some surface bruising. Your hair is coarse so it adds to the contrast of the whole situation. It does not seem that there is anything concerning to me.

Could you take anything for the bruising?

Nothing that is consistently effective. There are several skin recovery creams but It will just resolve with time.
