Can 60mg Prednisone for 2 weeks Affect Hair Transplant?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, 3 months and 6 days since my last hair transplant. I've been dealing with completely unrelated tinnitus which sprang up 3 weeks ago, and was prescribed today 2 weeks of 60mg prednisone (I think it titrates down as I progress through the 2 weeks) to help with it.

Just wondering if there is any interaction between prednisone and hair growth, hair transplant, etc? I'm right on the cusp of hair growing from this transplant and would hate for this steroid to affect it

*the ear doc I saw thinks the tinnitus is stress related and just prescribed the prednisone as a precaution. I will definitely not be taking it if it will impact my hair transplant - ringing in my ears be damn*d.

Thanks.

Tagging @DrTBarghouthi he may know, but I’m pretty sure I was prescribed that to reduce the swelling of my first HT.

yes I was reading prednisone is commonly given post-op. So assume there is no negative interaction, still good to make sure.

@DrTBarghouthi thoughts?

Thanks!

Since I've dealt with occasional scalp inflammation, Dr. Paul Shapiro actually prescribed me prednisone a day before surgery and for a week post-op just as a preventive measure.  So no, I would assume no negative impact on hair growth.

Dr. G: 1,000 grafts (FUT) 2008

Dr. Paul Shapiro: 2,348 grafts (FUT) 2009 ~ 1,999 grafts (FUT) 2011 ~ 300 grafts (Scar Reduction) 2013

Dr. Konior: 771 grafts (FUT) 2015 ~ 558 grafts (FUT) 2017 ~ 1,124 grafts (FUE) 2020

Did you ask the ENT doctor if it would impact your hair transplant? In my experience, it shouldn't negatively affect the hair transplant. There is the question of wound healing though. Chronic steroid use can impair wound healing. However, acute steroid use is typically fine and you're also 3 months post-procedure so it should mitigate against it.

My advice does not constitute a patient-physician relationship nor as medical advice and all medical questions/concerns should be addressed to your medical provider.

I agree with all of the above. We routinely give a short dose of prednisone to limit any swelling post op. Besides, you are three months after so there should be no worry at all. I advise you to take it as instructed.
