Dr. Diep Quantifies FUT-FUE Growth Differential

In one of his recently posted YouTube videos (I don’t think I’m allowed to link to it), Dr. John Diep says that grafts harvested by strip “will grow five to ten percent better” than grafts harvested by FUE.

Dr. Diep’s quantification is notable because he offers and regularly performs both methods of extraction and considers himself an FUE specialist. Dr. Diep performs all the extractions for his FUE cases himself using a manual (non-motorized) punch and tool of his own design.

As far as I’m aware, Dr. Diep is the only HRN recommended surgeon other than Drs. Feller and Lindsey and maybe Dr. Ron Shapiro to have publicly quantified the expected growth differential between these two harvesting methods in his practice.

In the mentioned video, Dr. Diep says that both extraction methods produce “excellent results” but that FUT/strip will grow “five to ten percent better.” He goes on to say that FUE is well suited to cases of mild to moderate hair loss whereas FUT/strip is advantageous for cases of advanced hair loss where very large numbers of grafts must be harvested.

More grist for the FUT vs. FUE mill, I suppose.

He said in the video that the difference in his FUT and FUE is 5-10% which sounds pretty normal, he also said that his FUE growth is usually better than most surgeons FUT a bold claim. But I think there are skilled surgeons who's difference may be even less like 3%, also another thing to consider is how much of a visual impact would 5-10% make on te overall result, i don't think there would be much of an impact if one at all. There were many surgeons here claiming the difference in yield was 20-30% a much bigger gap.

patient profile and biology is always understated when making these comparisons. A really good candidate with moderate loss will see great results with either. A more complicated candidate with more advanced loss will almost always find FUT to be a safer bet.

The debate remains centered on surgeon skill and extraction processes, as it should, but the wild card is always the candidate.

Pup,

Videos by recommended physicians from neutral sites like YouTube are always appropriate.

The debate will continue with FUT vs. FUE. Some say the transection (damaged graft) rate is higher with FUE. Even if a typical transection rate of 3 -4 %, the skilled surgeon typically takes enough extra grafts from the donor area to provide what the patient expects and pays for.

I had a large FUE case (5,125 grafts) in 2012. If you look at the pictures on my own blog site you can see how successful it was. Based on what I read in this dialogue thread, I think its appropriate to share my blog site so you can see more pictures. If not David (Moderator) will remove it. My blog has no forum opportunities for open dialogue. I've been using it to show before/after pictures during the past three years. The blog site is My FUE Hair Transplant

Thanks "Petchski". I've been posting pictures of my progress for 3 years now. I had 5,125 grafts done (FUE) in 2012 and another 2,000 in January of this year just to fill in some thin areas. I sometimes direct new hair transplant patients to my archives section where I blogged and posted pictures everyday for the first 30 days which provides everything they need to know and what to expect post surgery. Thanks for the kind words....yes... lots of people tell me how much younger I look.
