Senior Member 1978matt Posted April 1, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 1, 2012 Evening All, I've been lurking around for a while and thought I'd sign up to share my experiences in hairloss. Since about 2005/06 my hair has receeded down to a Norwood 3V. I've had a couple of HT consultations recently and both suggested I'd need 2500-3000 grafts to get the sort of result I'm looking for. As one surgeon pointed out to me recently, there's not much point getting it done at the front only for the rest of the hair at the back to fall out! Therefore, they suggested giving Finasteride a go. Like most people I took some convincing but when you separate the scaremongering from the hard facts then there isn't really a lot to be worried about. As a Doctor friend of mine pointed out, there are risks with virtually every drug you can take. So I'm going to take the plunge and have requested 1 month's supply via the Boots Hair Retention Programme here in the UK. As someone else pointed out is quite pricey (?46 for the first month, then ?90 for subsequent 3 month supplies). I guess if it really works for me I can shop around! I should be picking up the pills this week and once I start I'll upload a couple of 'before' photos and (hopefully) in a few months some afters! 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
Senior Member Dutch Posted April 1, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 1, 2012 Start off with half a tablet a day to see how you go if you want. ?180 for 6 months isn't that bad. I buy them from there too. No prescription or a visit to the GP every quarter & you know they're genuine from boots http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/blog/home-page.asp?WebID=2329

Senior Member 1978matt Posted April 9, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted April 9, 2012 Here's my 'before' photo. Jes*s it looks bad! I just had my haircut and this is straight out of the shower (I normally dye my hair light brown and use gel for a messy look). 1 week on Fin and the only possible side effect so far is a slight headache. I might try switching to 1mg every other day to see how that goes. 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
Senior Member Jotronic Posted April 19, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 19, 2012 (edited) 1978Matt, I hate to break this to you but you are not a NW3 Vertex. Your loss, while not complete, is in the pattern of a NW5A. With the amount of hair still present your loss would be classified as diffused loss but the pattern is clear. If you were a NW3 Vertex you would simply have high temples and a small spot in the crown. Senior Member 1978matt Posted April 19, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted April 19, 2012 NW3V or NW5A...either way I'm shafted! Thanks for the advice Spex. 0.5mg evey other day seems to be going ok so far but if not I'll try the above. 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day

You have options and if you take your time you'll make the right choice to improve your situation. Good luck. Senior Member 1978matt Posted June 2, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted June 2, 2012 Looking better in the mid scalp/crown region. Hairline has improved but is not as noticeable. 0.25mg Fin every other day Regaine Foam once a day Mon-Fri, twice on weekends Nizoral shampoo every 5 days 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
Senior Member BadBeat Posted June 2, 2012 Senior Member Posted June 2, 2012 I think it's working! I wouldn't expect much out of the hairline. Typically, Fin and Rogaine don't work great in the hairline although some people do see mild improvement. Only 2 months in and you're already thickening up! I'd stay on it at least a year and then reassess and possibly consider an HT at that point.
Senior Member BadBeat Posted June 2, 2012 Senior Member Posted June 2, 2012 Wow, you're only taking .25 mg every other day? Pretty phenomenal results considering most guys actually take 1.00-1.25 mg EVERY day!

Pretty phenomenal results considering most guys actually take 1.00-1.25 mg EVERY day! Not quite. I did 5 days on 1mg a day but suffered mild side effects (headache). I've tried a few different variants including 0.5mg every other day etc. I think the Regaine has contributed the most to the improvement. (PS it is definately the fin causing the headaches. Nos sides from Regaine) 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
Senior Member 1978matt Posted June 2, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted June 2, 2012 One other thing I've noticed is that there is barely a single hair on my pillow in the morning. There used to be about 5 or 6 hairs at least! 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
Senior Member gasto Posted June 4, 2012 Senior Member Posted June 4, 2012 If you are like me you'll leave it after depression and headaches strike full force.
Senior Member 1978matt Posted July 1, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted July 1, 2012 Another month on. Hair is longer than previous photos (I will probably get it cut in a week's time), and I dyed it this morning. 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
Senior Member 1978matt Posted July 1, 2012 Author Senior Member Posted July 1, 2012 3 months before and after. Before photo a little blurred and at a higher angle as i hadn't got the hang of the camera. 4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013 1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018 763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020 Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day
TJ1154 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Looking good. Tough to tell if there is thickening/regrowth because your hair seems longer now and longer hair can often provide better coverage. Definitely not worse though.
