  1. Stop the medication. Preserving hair is not worthy of depression.
  2. Interesting study regarding the usage of demal papilla cells in 3 dimensional growth cultures injected in lab mice:
  3. Thanks for the information. This is very valuable.
  4. No offence but... Can you subtract? 2009-2006 is 3 years, not 10.
  5. I know Rocky Balboa is not a psychiatrist, but this is my opinion on the bullying subject matter: I wouldn't recommend a hormonal disruptor such as finasteride, especially because it may worsen your depression. Sometimes, solutions are simple, like getting a girlfriend or hanging out with people whose company you enjoy. Take care.
  6. Be smart. It causes gymnecostasia(breast enlargement), erectile disfunction(which may be permanent) and depression(many suicide victims have been reported as Propecia users). The only reason why it is still being sold is because of the money it generates for the drug companies. Some people do not report side-effects, they are blessed, but I am sceptic about the long term users (no study has been done for more than 5 years usage). Shave your hair, or if you have the money, visit a hair surgeon for advice.
  7. Is that a sign of craftsmanship from your surgeon?
  8. If after reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormone_disruptor, you still believe that hormonal disruptors are save, then go to a psychologist.
  9. I have substantially lost a lot of hair due to the cessation of propecia and Minoxidil %5 application. I experienced much better mood after cessation as well. Let alone the other known side-effects.
  10. Yes, green and black tea are excellent anti-aging drinks.
  11. Piece of advice: Leave people that do not appreciate you just because you are going bald. Don't adapt to ludicrous and frivolous societal expectations even if they are standards or norms.
  12. What should be prohibited in this forum is people suggesting newbies to buy finasteride without Dr. consultation nor any knowledge of the potential side-effects. I've seen that and it is not funny at all.
  13. Your reading skills are quite lacking. I implied that Propecia's safety must be put to a test with a wider range of samples and for a longer period. The effectiveness is undisputed in the majority of cases. I doubt that in our case (acid reflux, mine is because of a hiatal hernia), the best solution is Nexium or any other Esomeprazol compound. I think the best solution is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissen_fundoplication I think that a healthy lifestyle is the best solution for health issues, and medicines with severe side-effects are not as efficient as one would like. Of course some people have no option but to take medicines perennially, again, they have been informed of the pros and cons and have decided that the pros outweigh the cons.
  14. The only reason that a drug is taken out of the market is because it is dangerous or it does not work. I fear that whilst finasteride works, the side-effects have not been studied well enough by the present scientific studies. Also, bare in mind, most drugs are taken when the illness is present. Finasteride must be taken for as long as the extra hair is wanted. So the usage of finasteride is prolonged. Unlike the majority of medicines, like antibiotics, that are taken only when infections arise. The body can later recover from the side effects.
  15. People that have incrementing side-effects and continue the drug out of fear of loosing the earned hair are, in my opinion, psychologically ill. That would need a psychological review. Of course, hair is just hair, and it adds little(if anything) to the survival of the organism. The reproductive organs, liver, thyroid and brain on the other side are paramount for the functioning of the whole body and once you harm those, if the harm is profound enough, it might be irreversible. As the saying goes: "one does not know what one has until it is lost".
  16. I haven't found side effects of hair transplants as of yet. The only down turn is that the excellent hair restoration surgeons are expensive, but from my understanding, definitely worth.
  17. Bare in mind I am here for objective reasoning. If you are going to take the pill, you have done so at your own risk and in full knowledge of the potential risks. There is nothing worse than taking blind decisions. Also take into consideration, that it is a life-long commitment. As soon as the ingestion of finasteride is stopped, the hair starts falling and all the previously gained hair is lost.
  18. Evaluation of efficacy and safety of finasteride ... [J Dermatol. 2012] - PubMed - NCBI Let's start by the racial bias. All the patients were Japanese. "Safety data were assessed by interviews and laboratory tests in all men enrolled in the study." Interviews for health issues? There are some health problems that are not easily targeted by pain complaints... But the highly biased claim in the conclusion is right at the end: "In Japanese men with AGA, oral finasteride used in the long-term study maintained progressive hair regrowth without recognized side-effect." Without recognized side-effect? There is no medicine out there without side-effect and yet they are able to construct such a claim? Evaluation of efficacy and safety of finasteride 1 mg in 3177 Japanese men with androgenetic alopecia - SATO - 2011 - The Journal of Dermatology - Wiley Online Library There is no information on the funding, as well.
  19. They look at the data out there. Unfortunately, only statistical data that supports its usage is out there, mainly because of marketing reasons. I am sure that when publicly funded studies arise, the data will be less prone to bias. I would like you to read this from nothing less than your beloved FDA: Q4. What data are available on this safety issue? A. The data that formed the basis for these labeling changes were based on two large, randomized controlled studies assessing the ability of 5-ARIs to reduce the rate of diagnosis of prostate cancer over a period of 7 years (Proscar) and 4 years (Avodart), respectively, in men at least 50 years of age. The Proscar trial evaluated the use of 5 mg doses of finasteride (Proscar) versus a placebo (sugar pill), and the Avodart trial evaluated the use of 0.5 mg doses of dutasteride (Avodart) versus a placebo, for the reduction of prostate cancer risk. The trials demonstrated an overall reduction in prostate cancer diagnoses with finasteride and dutasteride treatment (see the Drug Safety Communication Data Summary for more information). This overall reduction was due to a decreased incidence of lower risk forms of prostate cancer. However, both the finasteride trial and the dutasteride trial showed an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer. It is important to note that neither trial evaluated 1 mg doses of finasteride (Propecia), used to treat male pattern hair loss. Reference: Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) - National Cancer Institute As the following prominent institution proclaims, there must be more studies made to understand the causes of severe problems: " At the present time, the mechanism of interaction between the brain, 5 alpha-reductase metabolism, and hormones on sexual dysfunction is speculative and poorly understood. Clearly, this is a complicated issue, which overlaps with other disciplines in medicine such as Endocrinology, Urology, and Psychiatry. More research is needed to assess the actual incidence of side effects, to determine if there is a true causal relationship for persistent side effects, and, if so, to identify who may be at risk. We hope to participate in a multidisciplinary forum to further evaluate this topic. " Reference: ISHRS Task Force on Finasteride Adverse Event Controversies In other words, I would wait for more independent scientific studies.
  20. I went through it for 3 years. I did have some lower dosages at the end of the treatment and finally quited. Right now I am fine, apart from some occasional red knuckles I get every now and then. I haven't had the serious side effects(like permanent libido loss), but when in treatment, my head seemed to have some electrical spikes in the back, where the cervical is. I read that this drug also interferes with the binding of Dihydrotestosterone to Allopregnanolone(the latter being responsible for the formation of myelin, the substance surrounding and insulating neurons). So as you can guess, 5 Alpha Reductase type I inhibition disrupts the normal functioning of the brain. I only experienced some electrical spikes, other people have reported foggy consciousness, and memory loss. Dutasteride effects are even worse, because it also inhibits 5 Alpha Reductase type II If you still decide to take this very dangerous drug, talk to a neurologist about what I have mentioned here beforehand. Also consider the potential permanent side-effects: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1743-6109.2011.02255.x/abstract;jsessionid=B7EF59676463B53F0874310E54CE6815.d03t01 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21176115
  21. How about these about general medicine and research being propensely biased( apply it to the infamous Propecia trials, especially the fishy Japanese one where a ridiculous percentage of side-effects were purported). http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/sep/21/drugs-industry-scandal-ben-goldacre
  22. Good luck here, means: good luck not risking mammary glands enlargement, erectile dysfunction, headaches, permanent libido loss, etc...
  23. Well done. I am surprised those doctors actually wrote what Zenmunk purportedly reports, when there is "palpitations" listed in the list of potential side effects in the Propecia manual. That's why making one own's investigations beats some "conflict of interest" doctors.
