A long story short, i had about 2700 grafts with Rahal in dec 2008, please see pre, post and one year results. So in jan 2011 i noticed my hair thining again so i contacted rahal and scheduled for next week for 1500 inculding 500 touchup , please see fotos taken today. So what do you guys think, did i lose real hair or the transplaned hair over the past 2.5 years? Do you think 1500 will be good to fill in the gaps?

Thank you for your time.

cheers,

P

Have you been on propecia or rogaine since your surgery? I'm sure you've probably lost more native hair.

Petro,

In my opinion, it's far more likely that you've continued losing native hairs. Is there a reason why you aren't utilizing preventive medications like minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia)? Additionally, I think 1,500 grafts should sufficiently thicken the highlighted areas.

Good luck! Please keep us updated on your progress.

As the others have stated, get on the meds and stay on them! If you are spending that kinda money on a transplant, you need to take advantage of the meds to keep your remaining native hair!

The dates are within the image file names. So photos 7,8 and 9 in the sequence are from 2009.

As your hair was thin overall throughout the recipient area prior to surgery, without the aid of treatments a lot of it could've been lost since then. Maybe all of it. This means that you could be left with only grafted hair in this area.

Dr Rahal's recommendation of 1500 grafts will really make a difference, bringing back the density with strong hairs not undergoing miniaturization, and the result could possibly surpass the original.

Best of luck next week.

It does look like you continued to lose native hairs resulting in the thinning. You really should consider using fin & rogaine to slow or stop your hair loss.

Petro

Just out of curiosity, how did you manage to get in to Dr Rahal so quick? Have you had this scheduled for a long time?

I booked it last jan 2011 for next week.

Thank you mattj, is it common practice to implant new grafts around old grafted hairs with out damaging either?

It's definitely common practice.

I see from your photos that you had grafts planted around native hairs during your first procedure. (This is also common practice.) Those hairs were undamaged, they grew back, but went on to be lost due to the continuation of the balding process.

Planting new grafts around existing ones is actually considered safer overall as the hairs already present come from outside of the balding area, making them stronger than hairs that are facing the effects of androgenic alopecia.

As you'll know, Dr Rahal is very careful and uses magnification, so actually causing direct harm to grafts is not something you need to worry about.

Yes, I'd say that 1,500 grafts will complete or reestablish what you lost. Good luck with that. Dr. Rahal will take care of you nicely.

Definitely get back on the meds to prevent further loss.

A good thing about this second procedure is that as the grafts have been planted among those already existing, once those old grafts grow back you'll soon return to looking how you did pre-op; and those hairs will hide the newly sprouting grafts, covering them during the time when they offer the least cosmetic benefit. In other words, you'll probably find the post-op 'doldrums' phase easier this time, with your hair gradually thickening up. It should all come together nicely.

This should be a very dense result. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. Here's to good growth - and to early growth!
