"Say...did you get a hair transplant?"

I know some of you out there have noticed peoples' eyes wandering up to your hairline before, either wondering if you're thinning or whether you've had work done.

But do any of you have stories about getting "found out" by friends or families who recognize your transplants for what they are? I don't mean people who recognize you have more hair, but people who recognize specifically you've had surgery. Of course, this can either be an insult or a compliment depending on the comment and context... (for the record, no one's ever said anything to me)...

Multiplier,

I've heard several stories where hair transplant patients bump into colleagues, friends, family members they haven't seen in a while, and the response has been "you look good ... something is different! Have you ____________ (lost weight, gone tanning, starting working out, etc)." It seems like a lot of people notice something is different (in a good way), but not many people can 'put their finger on it.'

No one has asked me if I have gotten a transplant. I have gotten a few other funny comments though. Here's a few:

"Wow! You've got a full head of hair!"

"I didn't realize you had so much hair."

"I thought you were bald."

"Is it Rogaine?"

If someone did ask me if I had a transplant I would just reply, "I wish I could afford it. I could certainly use one." ;)

Before my repair with Dr. Wong I had a few people point it out. One was a co-worker at a restaurant I worked in when I was about 25. My hairline had already receded quite badly, enough for the min-grafts to be exposed. I had just gotten a hair cut and he came up to me and made a comment about how I should keep it longer to hide the work.

The next time was when I was 27 working in a wholesale IT supply company. I was in a debate with a colleague during a sales meeting and to win the debate he said "maybe if you didn't have such ugly hair plugs you could actually have enough peace of mind to see my point" or something to that effect.

The next time was another colleague at the same company asking me, in front of all of our colleagues and the president of the company, if I had hair plugs and where could he get some if he needed it.

Aside from those instances I cannot recall any other "confrontations" where my old bad work came up in conversation. However, most every person I would speak to face to face would let their gaze wander from my eyes to my hairline. It was almost without fail from the time I was 24/25 to 32. From the age of 32 onward I've never had a single negative comment much less had anyone find me out that I didn't tell about it beforehand. I kinda have to tell people now because when people I meet ask me what I do for a living I have to tell them. Of those that do ask many of them also ask why I work for a HT clinic if I'm not bald. At that I can only chuckle then explain my history.

The Truth is in The Results

Appreciate your stories, Jotronic. I don't know if I could have responded to the "maybe if you didn't have such ugly hair plugs" guy without seriously considering knocking his teeth out!

Hairdresser once asked me if I had an HT, as my pre repair grafts wern't great, but not doll hair like, I said I hadn't but would, but he knew the score, crappy scar and not quite right hair at the front 2+2 =4. Due credit it to him though, as I do know him and no one else has ever said anything so he hadn't mentioned it to anyone else.

I think you may be surprised by the amount of people whom wont even notice (unless there is practically no hair).

If it looks natural and you have a successful procedure then people would just assume that you had the hair in the first place.

Chances are that they will be able to say that you look a bit different, but it will always be positive. :)

Has anyone had a negative experience?
