What did you wish you knew before your FUT procedure?

What are some things you wish you knew before (or after) your FUT procedure? I have a 3,000 FUT procedure with Dr. Konior coming up next month and wanted to reach out to those who've had an FUT procedure for any insight.

Any tips/thoughts on recovery, sleep, expectations, scars, procedure, pain, etc.? Anything you wish you knew?

Thanks in advance all!

I will say you will look really weird/awkward for more time than you expect.

A lot of people say they go back to normal life in a few weeks... I didn't find that to be the case at all. I was looking like a freak up until just now which is right at the 3 month mark.

Things that make you look weird for a while:

  1. scar shockloss
  2. recipient area redness
  3. recipient area shockloss and regrowth since being shaved down

My native hair that was in my frontal 1/3 is just now at a reasonable length where it looks somewhat "normal", and my hair on the back and sides are covering my scar which is healing as expected.

Are people able to use fibers to hide the freak look?

Sleep upright if you can.  The staples or sutures will get annoying to sleep on.  Expect the ugly duckling stage for round 1 to be more severe than subsequent procedures.  Be patient!

Good call going with Dr. K.  Make a thread on the surgery if you can.  When is the surgery?

Dr. G: 1,000 grafts (FUT) 2008

Dr. Paul Shapiro: 2,348 grafts (FUT) 2009 ~ 1,999 grafts (FUT) 2011 ~ 300 grafts (Scar Reduction) 2013

Dr. Konior: 771 grafts (FUT) 2015 ~ 558 grafts (FUT) 2017 ~ 1,124 grafts (FUE) 2020

I'm a 2x Konior patient with FUT both times.

The best advice I can give is to be patient, take your medication and follow the guidelines given to you. Sleeping is awkward as the staples/sutures will cause discomfort so I definitely recommend the neck pad given to you and if possible sleep upright. They're very accommodating and will give you time for breaks/lunch etc. Feel free to PM if you'd like. Is this for your hairline?
