Are 1800 grafts enough?

Hi all

I posted in the wrong thread so have moved this here now and added a lot more photos. I would really appreciate your thoughts on my situation.

Finally I am about to take the jump, after many years of standing on the sidelines.

I have attached pics of the area I want to cover. My initial consultation was generally positive and I'm happy with the surgeon but I don't have the best donor area so am limited to 1800 - 2000 grafts.

This would be FUE.

I am concerned that I might not achieve full coverage. I am willing to try because frankly I have no other choice except perhaps a hairpiece - and I don't really want that.

I have also attached a pic of how I look with concealer (base + fibres). It's a lot of hassle and mess to do this. I would still have to use some concealer after FUE but surely it'd be easier than it is now?

The main question is: would 1800 - 2000 grafts be enough to cover my bald patch?

That's going to disappoint you, you're easily a two or three surgery, 6 to 7k graft case to get satisfying coverage.

Hair loss patient and transplant veteran. Once a Norwood 3A.

Received 2,700 grafts with coalition doctor on 8/13/2010

Received 2,380 grafts with Dr. Steven Gabel on 9/30/2011

Received 1,820 grafts with Dr. Steven Gabel on 7/28/2016

Agreed not enough.

If the graft count is lower due to lack of funds, then save up a bit longer and have the procedure later.

Or focus the grafts in the mid scalp. A focused 1800 graft procedure in a small defined area will give you results, but not if they are spread out over a larger area.

I believe I made the same comment in your other thread, but if I were you I would forget about the crown and just address the midscalp area, and when the grafts grow in comb the hair back to cover your crown.

This would be my approach if I had limited donor (I think that's what you said previously if I remember now).

Possible SMP and also maybe just using toppix could make such a concentrated surgery go a long way.

Again DO NOT have a surgery over that large area of only 1800 grafts and expect it to make a major difference.

We've seen countless posts here, some of late, where people come back with much disappointment asking "did I really get XXXX grafts?"

Don't be one of them.

I submitted an online request with Dr Erdogan's clinic and they came back with a more positive (possible) 5000 grafts, though I don't understand how there can be such a big difference from the 1800 quoted to me by a different Dr in London.

The surgery would build up the middle/front hairline but not the crown.

5000 grafts does of course mean a much higher cost. I'm really not sure what to do now.

You are a prime example of why basing a decision on price and location could be dangerous. The doctor that said 1800 is way off, I mean way off. I am not going to call him dishonest but maybe this is all he is able to do. You can not expect a Fiat dealership to try to sell you a Ferrari. Thankfully you decided to consult with an ethical doctor that gave you a realistic quote. When I see 5000 grafts I am think 50%-66% of the area will be covered (front to mid). Keep researching and maybe send consults to other doctors to get more opinion

If you want to be happy?

Get 3500 FUT in frontal third only. Ignore other balding areas while you wait a year for HT #1 to grow.

If you get 1800 in that entire area of baldness, you’ll look the EXACT same as you do now. Others here will agree

3185 FUT with Dr. Rahal on 2/17/16

1204 FUT with Dr. Rahal on 3/27/17

---> total of 4389 grafts to my frontal third via FUT

---> 1mg finasteride daily since 1999:)
