Regular Member teachncoach Posted July 15, 2009 Regular Member Share Posted July 15, 2009 Hello I just recieved my HT 2 days ago. I have been on propecia for about a year. In 6 months or so I will be trying to have a child. Does anyone know if propecia will affect me when trying in having a baby. Is this bad for my sperm, should I get off it till my wife gets pregnant? Senior Member aaron1234 Posted July 15, 2009 Senior Member Share Posted July 15, 2009 I've been a pretty avid reader of Dr. Rassman's blog and he continually reiterates that Propecia will not cause any birth defects for the baby. I'm not sure if it'll effect your sperm. Maybe someone else has more knowledge. Senior Member mmhce Posted July 15, 2009 Senior Member Share Posted July 15, 2009 It's more than "till my wife gets pregnant". While trying to get pregnant and after your wife gets pregnant, you will have to stay off finasteride, because finasteride in your semen can migrate through mucous membranes in the vaginal walls and other gynacaelogical structures of your wife's body (BTW, she shouldn't be handling finasteride tablets either) entering into her blood and across the placenta into the foetus. This is assuming that you both continue to have sexual intercourse with each other during her pregnancy, and there is a possibility of exchange of body fluids. P.S. There are other forms of sexual activity that are non-penetrative, in which you both do not exchange body fluids. take care...

Senior Member aaron1234 Posted July 15, 2009 Senior Member Share Posted July 15, 2009 Cautious, that's good to hear. I have yet to hear a doctor express what mmhce said. Not saying it isn't true.... just saying. Dr. Glenn Charles
I have been prescribing Propecia for over 10 years, and have never told a patient that they had to stop taking medication if he was trying to get wife pregnant. I have had dozens of patients over the years that had healthy children while taking Propecia. It is true that Merck strongly suggests that females not come in direct contact with the medication. I wish you luck and remember practice makes perfect. Senior Member mmhce Posted July 16, 2009 Senior Member Share Posted July 16, 2009 Dr. Charles, Thank you for your valued input! Would you offer some comments on this study that was published in 2004? http://www.scielo.br/pdf/rhc/v59n4/21389.pdf As always, I deeply value constructive criticism and correction. Bill - Seemiller
teachncoach, It seems you've been given various input from various members. Be sure to do your own research and discuss it with your doctor. However, Coalition member Dr. William Reed wrote an informative article on this topic you might be interested in reading. Regular Member Geomarq Posted July 16, 2009 Regular Member Share Posted July 16, 2009 and if care is taken to identify pregnancy in the first several weeks. What does this part mean (from the 2007 Article)? His summary is that it's ok to take fin. during the conception process, making sure woman is not in touch w/ it, but what's that last part mean? Senior Member hairthere Posted July 17, 2009 Senior Member Share Posted July 17, 2009 I stopped the propecia while trying to conceive. there doesn't appear to be a link between birth defects and fin but why risk it? Senior Member Abedogg Posted July 20, 2009 Senior Member Share Posted July 20, 2009 I've had 2 kids on it and read a ton before we had them and I stayed on it the entire time. No problems. If there was a real problem Merck would need to post major warnings on their label. Had 3k With Umar on Feb 16, 2009 My Hair Loss Website
