Sexual side effect by using Minoxidil 5%

Minoxidil does not inhibit hormone production, it does not remove DHT from the body, if you're taking minoxidil and having ED it's more than likely either mental or some other hormonal issue perhaps caused by deficincies like vitamin D. Correlation does not imply causation sexual dysfunction is a common problem amongst men of all ages ranging from actual organic physical problems to hormonal problems to mental problems. You can not say I take minoxidil and have ED therefore minoxidil causes ED, the makers of minoxidil are required to list the side effects from common to uncommon ED is not a listed side effect. You can google literally anything on the Internet and someone will be claiming it gave them ED. Google aspirin ED, Google Tylenol ED, hell Google Vicks ED I'm sure you'll find someone claiming it caused them ED.

I used Generic Minoxidil 5% for Men. I used it on a much larger area than recommended and, I use a larger dose. At first I noticed low quality erection, about 15 days after starting treatment. By day 21 I was unable to get an erection at all, and my libido was very low. I immediately stopped using Generic Minoxidil 5% for Men. My erections gradually returned to normal over two weeks. Losing the ability to get an erection is very disconcerting. Thankfully the effect is only temporary. I also noticed other side effects, my blood pressure went from 120/64 to 99/58. My tinnitus was less also. Having a blood pressure of 99/58 makes you feel less energetic. Had I used Generic Minoxidil 5% for Men in a smaller area as directed, and if I used the proper dosage, the side effects may have been not noticeable. I got greedy and the side effects were intolerable. I used 2/3s of one can. Costco refunded my money in full when I returned the product.

I experienced complete loss of the ability to have an erection after 3 weeks of using Minoxidil. I used twice the recommended amount and over a large area of the scalp. Previously my fasting blood sugar was about 100. Minoxidil may raise your blood sugar. Mine went up to 114. The high blood sugar may have caused the ED. I stopped taking Minoxidil and my erections returned to normal. I may have caused my own problem by not using Minoxidil as directed (ie: using a double dose, and over a large area of the scalp.)

This post is for both the folks on here who have or are experiencing the side effects of Minoxidil 5% (both the foam and the liquid form) as well as a heads up on those who doubt the veracity of the testimonies from those who are.

PREFACE: I had been wearing a hairpiece for 4 years now (had thinning hair on top but otherwise have a full set of hair) and this past winter I got lazy and had not put on my hairpiece for about 3 weeks opting instead to wear a hat during the winter months when I went out. 3 weeks turned into 5+ weeks and my hair on top started to grow. Call it curiosity but I decided to let it grow back just to see what if felt like to have my own hair. Enter Minoxidil.

In an effort to maximize my hair growth on top I purchased Rogaine 5% foam as it was the only option I had at the time (bought at Walmart). I read the instructions as well as the listed potential side effects as well as watched a plethora of videos on YT and started applying twice a day to the areas on the top part of my head that were thinner than the others. Enter the side effects:

ENTER SIDE EFFECT #1: While I was on the lookout for any of the LISTED side effects such as redness of the scalp etc (never happened) I noticed my eyes were swollen as if I had been in a boxing rink for a few rounds with Mohammed Ali, the bags under my eyes were big enough to pack for a 2 week holiday, and I looked very haggard - so much so that now I started wearing sunglasses to go out in addition to wearing a hat. I eat well, sleep well and take vitamins religiously as well as regular exercise. Did a Google search and noticed that I was not alone in this side-effect with Rogaine 5%. I then opted to use the 5% Minoxidil LIQUID as it was easier to titrate vs the 1/2 capful Rogaine foam and only applied the 5% liquid once a day vs two. The swollen eyes, eye bags, etc. improved marginally (10%) but that can be partly attributed to the under eye serums and eye creams I began to use in an effort to help curtail the swelling.

ENTER SIDE EFFECT #2: Sudden weight gain/water retention. My 34" pants were now getting quite tight and I also noticed my hands/fingers had swollen to the point I couldn't get my rings off. No change in my eating/exercise sleeping habits during this time.

ENTER SIDE EFFECT #3: Started noticing persistent headaches. I RARELY (if ever) have headaches.

ENTER SIDE EFFECT #4: Mood changes: This one is hard to describe -suffice to say I didn't feel like my usual jovial self. Felt "different". No other external factors could be attributed to this.

ENTER SIDE EFFECT #5: Loss of libido - my tool felt like it was iced. Gone were the rock hard erections and the interest in sex I enjoyed previous to Minoxidil. Even with sexual supplements like Damiana, Horny Goat Weed, Ginseng and Maca they did nothing as they had before.

CONCLUSION: This is my first day off Minoxidl after having only been on it for 3 weeks. Ain't EVER going to use it again.

REMARKS: The LISTED side effects given by the manufacturer are those that were noted back in 2006 when the studies were done on a LIMITED numbers of people that participated in the clinical trials. Today, 10 years later, there are MILLIONS of men and women who have tried Minoxidil some of whom are experiencing the above side effects (and possibly other side effects) that were NOT observed in the initial clinical trials.

FDA approval isn't worth the paper its printed on. MANY FDA medications that were originally approved now have class action law suits against the pharma companies that produced them.

BUYER BEWARE!

So how exactly is Minoxidil ruining your libido? we know finasteride lowers your DHT serum by up to 70% which can cause side effects like ED but how exactly is Minoxidil doing this? thousands of people have complained of the same side effects with Ibuprofen, does this mean Ibuprofen causes ED too?

I'm sure the same question was asked initially about finasteride on forums such as this.

I don't think anyone can or will ever doubt that finasteride can cause sexual side effects for one because its a listed side effect, but second the simple fact that it inhibits DHT a powerful androgen is proof enough.

However, minoxidil does not and will not inhibit any hormones its a vasodilator. I'm not doubting you experienced some dermatological side effects like water retention weight gain etc. but I seriously doubt you experienced ED from the minoxidil, there are a multitude of reasons why one could experience ED and one of the most prevalent in young men is psychological.

Since when is it a prerequisite that a medication needs to lower DHT levels to affect libido...

Where did I say lowering DHT is a pre-requisite? I'm simply stating the obvious, it's easy to deduce why finasteride would cause such side effects. So again how is minoxidil exactly causing ED what is the mechanism? Or are you going to say "since when does a medication have to have a mechanism to lower libido"

That's my point exactly, a long list of ridiculous drugs that supposedly cause ED, I could say this website causes ED, correlation does not equal causation. At what point do we just accept that a majority of these ED stories are psychosomatic, I could say this website gave me ED, I could say that prior to going on this website I had strong erections and a high libido and once I logged on I began having ED. Does that mean that this website ACTUALLY caused the ED? or could there be an underlying cause like low testosterone, stress, anxiety etc?

Supposedly ridiculous to you - quite serious for others. Does not detract from the fact that they are real.

Performance anxiety is real, doesn't mean that there is anything physically wrong with you.

So is ignorance.

Yes it is, especially ignorant people who do not care about actual scientific evidence and base reality on correlation and internet anecdotes.

Indeed, ignorant people who choose to omit empirical evidence.

Please share the empirical evidence? in order for it to be considered empirical evidence you must first have a proposed mechanism that is the root cause.

None of your arguments are even logical, for one comparing minoxidil to finasteride is comparing apples to oranges, completely different mechanisms that treat hair loss, one is a vasodilator and the other is a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor . Secondly, Minoxidil has been around 10 years longer than finasteride, don't you think that after 30 years of use and millions of men who use it everyday more men would report erectile dysfunction and would then suit the makers of minoxidil for not listing it as a side effect which is required by the FDA? The biggest difference between Post Finasteride Syndrome and your anectodal evidence that minoxidil caused your ED is that there is has been enough men who have reported this symptom to warrant additional research and enough to have forced the makers of finasteride to list it on the bottle.

Anyways there is no point in arguing with you because i'm pretty sure you just created this account to post this on this thread and will more than likely disappear after so long.

Minoxidil was being used as an anti-hypertensive for many decades before it was found to be useful in MPB.

So far there has been no scientific evidence to prove the sexual side effects of Minoxidil.

Besides Minoxidil is a direct vasodilator - you know what else is also a vasodilator? - a famous drug used in erectile Dysfunction = VIAGRA.

I rest my case.

Dude,

No one is doubting you are not getting a hard on. But they are simply saying that there is no evidence that the drug Minoxidil causes it.

If and only IF it is one in a several billion (I guess there are about 7-8 billion of us on this planet) cases of Minoxidil causing impotence in you - then that GOD played a cruel joke on you!.

If not then there is some other reason for your erectile dysfunction....... then you better get it checked out with a reputed physician who deals with impotency and testosterone deficiency.

Otherwise you may be denying yourself the opportunity to cure yourself of whatever the hell is afflicting you.

Good luck.

1) There were people that were dismissing the vile side effects about Propecia....until of course the class action lawsuits started pouring in.

2) My testosterone levels are above average.

3) After 2 days off of Minox I am back to normal (as many here have stated).

4) There have been MANY FDA drugs used by BILLIONS of people in the world (some for over 30 years) that have been now banned as dangerous.

5) Get a clue.
