The elite surgeons who are on this forum use ultra refined follicular unit transplantation techniques which mean they use microscopes and modern blades to dissect the grafts into smaller more refined follicular units as opposed to the older techniques which had larger bunches of grafts or 'mini grafts", which look pluggier and less natural.

Good question, bnash79. My guess is that if you asked 10 different docs you'd get 10 different answers. FUT is, by definition, not the mini graft/micro graft transplantation approach of old. So what, if anything, is the difference between FUT and the popular marketing term "Ultra Refined" FUT? Some docs would say nothing, that by nature and definition FUT is ultra refined compared to non-FUT transplants of old. Others might say it refers to the doc and his team's skill set in executing FUT. Others still might say it refers to particular methods or instruments used to implant the FU's, such as custom cut blades for making the recipient sites, lateral slit technique, etc. I don't think there is an industry standard for what the term "ultra refined" means when used as a prefix with FUT, but it would interesting to see what the docs on here say.

If you go to some of the top doc websites they explain the techniques they use. H&w, feller, rahal, Shapiro, t&d, Bernstein all have detailed explanations of fue and fut on their sites

FUT stands for "follicular unit transplantation". In order to be classified as follicular unit transplantation one must be using stereoscopic microscopes at all dissecting stations to separate the naturally occurring follicular bundles out of the donor tissue. This was the defining difference between the older mini-micro grafting where, at best, jeweler's loupes were used to dissect the grafts. The move to stereoscopic dissecting microscopes improved overall yield by 30%.

 

URFUT or "ultra refined follicular unit transplantation" is not a "technique" per se. Dr. Hasson was the first to use this term when describing hair restoration surgery when he was giving a presentation on the merits of the lateral slit technique, which we invented and perfected. The phrase describes surgery where all the details are addressed to the highest degree. Angle, direction, custom sized incisions matched to the size of the corresponding graft, etc. When compared to the mess that was coming out most clinics at the time you could easily see, and in a lot of cases still see, how our procedures are so refined even right out of surgery.

A good thing to realize is that some doctors may use it as a marketing term, just like they use Bobman's photos. H and W and others actually do it. Do your research and figure out who is the real deal.

I think Hasson and Wong also invented the term 'Gold Standard' . For a while Hasson and Wong were the "Gold Standard". As a result, many of the world's financial institutions and the federal reserve had a crises on their hands - Alan Greenspan got confused almost went to H & W for a transplant. His stylist recommended glasses instead.
