Dr. Lindsey update on 2600 FUE case McLean VA

Here is an update on our 3 stage 2600 graft FUE case that I posted in May. He is now 13 months out from the first 750 grafts, 12 months out from the 2nd 750 grafts, and 3.5 months out from the final 1100 FUEs. He called asking for more, and I told him we need to wait until that last session really grows in, next spring. But even at this stage he really is looking a lot better covered than preop…and his last case really hasn’t kicked in yet. I’m anxious for pictures next year.

I took pics of the donor area with and without flash. He has a very tight haircut, and I would postulate that if you saw him in public, or sat behind him in church, that you would not be able to tell he’s had any work done, even with his short haircut.

He’s a businessman in a nearby state, and I’ve hired him to help me with a side project, so I’m sure that I’ll have followup pictures down the road.

I vaguely recall a poster on his earlier thread asking if we didn’t go a little high on the donor area. Interestingly, one of his requests was to take even higher in the future…to get more hair, even if it runs the risk of balding later. I told him let’s review his progress next spring, I suspect he’ll have a really nice result from what is already done.

I agree. He wants to keep that short haircut....so he doesn't have the layering advantage that most postop patients get. Nevertheless he should look pretty good next May!

Dr. Lindsey,

Thank you for sharing this case! The FUE work looks fantastic. Are you still utilizing a manual punch to remove the grafts?

I am much more successful with Feller manual punches than with any of the motorized systems. I do use a different punch on occasion, but only if we are having trouble with the Feller punches. I'd guess we do 90% of our FUEs with Feller 0.9 & 1.0 mm punches.

While I am not "wowed" quite yet, this will be an interesting case to follow. It will look a lot better when his scalp reuturns to normal color as well.

Once the redness goes away and if he cuts the sides a bit shorter to blend it will look great. He will have a great hairline and a very popular buzzed cut if he keeps it that way. A buzzed cut with a great hairline looks as good as a full head of hair. The "illusion" is there that he has all of his hair. I think more FUE should be considered by patients that cant achieve as much density as desired with a STRIP procedure and keeping longer hair to cover a scar. By keeping a buzz cut like this, the "bald" look is GONE! I would like to see more results of patients that try this.

Thanks for the comments. I still would push someone who needs alot of hair, like this guy, for 1 big strip, rather than several FUEs. If he'd be willing to keep his hair just a little longer I think we could have done it and left a minimal scar...but he insisted on this tight of a buzz cut in the donor region and so the decision turned on that alone.

Nevertheless, FUE is certainly harder, more expensive, more time consuming than strip, and although this fellow got a great result so far, FUE is more variable in the results than strip.

All crucial info to weigh when considering FUE vs Strip.
