24 year old looking for a good center in St. Louis, MO

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. My name is Scott and I'm a 24 year old male in Columbia, MO. I recently decided that I needed to do something about my thinning hair. I have been researching through St. Louis but so far have only seen Bosley and PAI (I had an apt, but cancelled after I have seen so many bad reviews). If anyone can suggest a location with good reviews, physicians and that you think I would feel comfortable going to, please let me know.

Welcome lionkingfan56,

What Leeson is saying is, in one direction you have Dr. Feller and in the other you have Dr. Shapiro. (both are recommended by this site)

If you don't recognize the above doctors names then you really need to do a lot more research before moving forward with your transplant.

He's saying that you will need to travel to get the results that you want. I'm personally partial to the work of Dr. Rahal in Ottawa, Dr. Konior in Chicago, Dr. Shapiro in Minnesota, Dr. Wong in Vancouver, Dr. Cooley in Charlotte, Dr. Alexander in Phoenix, Dr. Keene in Tuscon, and from what little I've seen, of Dr. Tykocinski in Brazil and Dr. Pathomvanich in Thailand. I'm sure I've left quite a few very good doctors out, but those are the ones that I feel I am most impressed with. Dr. Bernstein is cost prohibitive for many members, as he charges $6 per graft, while on the other end of the spectrum traveling from the US to Canada, Brazil, or Thailand will give you a nice discount because of the exchange rate. All of the other docs listed are comparably priced with one another at between $4 to $5 per graft.

Nobody that I know of. Look, all it takes is a few minutes on google to see the results of bad hair transplants, and risking surgery with a doctor who does not enjoy a great reputation and/or is not well known, is not something that anybody on this site would recommend. Start with the doctors that I told you I like and get other people's opinions as well, but more importantly just play around on here and get a feel for the doctors that you like. But if a doctor is not recommended on here, I wouldn't even consider him just because I feel as though I NEED the transparency this site ensures.

I personally wouldn't go as far as TC17, there are some excellent surgeons outside of this site, However, I'd also recommend spending a lot of time on here researching and getting others opinions.

Agreed, there are some doctors outside of this site that haven't been recommended "yet" (im saying yet because I think the doctor im about to mention should be up on that list soon).

Im also 24 I had mine done with Dr. Umar from redondo beach, ca just over a week ago. Although the results will be the final determining factor of I made a good choice or not, so far the experience has been stellar.

If you want a great surgeon and want to be in the vicinity of St. Louis, then I suggest to travel a couple hours north to Chicago and meet up with Dr. Konior.

Dr. G: 1,000 grafts (FUT) 2008

Dr. Paul Shapiro: 2,348 grafts (FUT) 2009 ~ 1,999 grafts (FUT) 2011 ~ 300 grafts (Scar Reduction) 2013

Dr. Konior: 771 grafts (FUT) 2015 ~ 558 grafts (FUT) 2017 ~ 1,124 grafts (FUE) 2020

I lived in O'Fallon, IL about 18 miles from St Louis on the other side of the river when I had my HT done back on Jan 15th of this year. I choose to drive the 570 miles north to Minneapolis to have it done by Dr Ron Shapiro whom I found highly recommended on this site. It's not really not that far to drive to get his world class skills as reviewed by many of his patients on this site. However, if location is a concern for you, then you could also look at Dr Lawrence Samuels http://www.stlouishair.com/ in Chesterfield, MO. Dr Samuels is also recommended here on this site. I had my sutures removed by his staff for free and Dr. Samuels even took the time to look me over and said the work looked very good. One of Dr Lawrence's techs a really nice lady who was removing the sutures seemed noticeably impressed by Dr Shapiro's closure of my donor area. Interestingly, you may want to consider that she also told me they've never done an HT quite as large as the one I had done. And I "only" had 3271 grafts put in. This doesn't seem that large of a number considering the work of some of the other folks on this site have had done. If I recall correctly, she said the most they've ever done was around 1700. Something you might consider depending upon how much work you want/need done.

1st HT: 3271 Grafts (6167 Total Hairs) with Dr. Ron Shapiro on 15 Jan 2009: 31cm length strip x 1.75cm width (1's - 835, 2's - 2000, 3's - 412, 4's - 24)

2nd HT: 2631 Grafts (4574 Total Hairs) with Dr. Ron Shapiro on 10 Aug 2010: 34cm length strip x 1.7cm width (1's - 943, 2's - 1440, 3's - 241, 4's - 7)

Leeson,

I think you maybe right, Dr. Samuels doesn't seem to be recommended on here anymore since I couldn't find his name now either. However, I did find this post from Bill last year recommending him; http://hair-restoration-info.c...421052683#7421052683

amazing...people investing financially and emotionally and they were worried about finding someone in their city...do some research absorb 500 in airfare...(some refund this) make a flight to a surgeon you trust and have researched.

sigh

no pain no gain

So has anyone gone to these centers that you claim are inferior? What proof do you have that these are bad physicians, does anyone have a story of a botched procedure or actual horror story they could back up? I heard alot of people on this site bash PAI, but with no good reason, I've had friends whom attended this clinic with no complaints and are happy with their results.

I've just heard no reason to justify these claims

Do a search in the FIND section and you'll find why you get negative feedback on PAI, Bosley, MHR, etc... Most of these clinics do suck. I know from personal experience!

My Advice would be to listen to these guys, research and then research more! I am in the chicago area and narrowed my search down to Dr. Shapiro, Hasson & Wong and Dr. Konior and the end i scheduled my procedure with Dr . Shapiro. PLEASE listen to the people on this site they will not push you in the wrong direction and do your own research! I would take a look at the 3 Doc's above and schedule online consultations with them! All three are world class and you can't go wrong with any of them!

the research is all laid out here for you by people who have already done their research...simply look at results...doctors with no very little documented cases and actual picture/video results i would stay away from...when you see half or more narrowing their doctors down to three you can see that those are probably the ones you want to consult with...i am not going to push a particular doctor, but i knew that if i didn't chose the doctor i did, i would always second guess my decision..like leeson said...it is definitely not worth the gamble...consistent results is the key...any halfway decent surgeon can have post a few good results and the rest not come out so great.

just because surgeons use the same protocols does not mean you will have the same results...artistry plays a big role in the outcome...every had is shaped different...hairloss falls into many different categories...not every norwood six has the same exact pattern...a surgeons ability to place the grafts in a way that provides the appearance of more coverage can be the difference in an O.K. procedure rather than a great procedure.

no pain no gain

i am read these boards and offer what advice i can because i know how hairloss changes peoples lives...i see people who think if a doctor down the street does HT then he must know what he is doing...not all doctors are created equal.

no pain no gain
