  1. You forgot to give your wife, a nurse, credit for drawing your blood. Thank goodness she was there and I'm glad she had a tough time too or it would have made me look bad. See you in a month either in person or by pics. Merry Christmas. Dr. L
  2. Viewers may recall this nice young lady. She had 3rd degree burns on her scalp and we excised the top scar twice (first video attached to end of this video) and now, a year out from part 2, we'll MFUE into her scar. We got 555 grafts, and have had a series of good results in placing hair into scar by cutting the grafts slightly "beefier", hense not FUE, and placing the slits a little farther apart than in typcial HT. HOPEFULLY, she won't pull these out during sleeping the next few days and we'll get pics in a year. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA The video is:
  3. We have had repeated problems in hairpiece wearers to the point where that is a deal breaker for me to offer surgery. Now, I'm not sure that it was not the adhesive the patients were using that irritated the scalp but we definitely had big areas of low or no growth and photos of irritated skin...that I have never seen in non hair piece wearing patients. And in our guys all said the were either careful with the glue or didn't use it...but their heads were sticky...I took pics and showed it to them... And I see a guy a month with a piece...and half of them are DIRTY. So I guess it varies from practice to practice, but its a no go at our place. The last guy we did with a hairpiece shopped with me for 3 years. He's famous, I bent over backwards to meet the guy on his schedule and he promised to not wear the system. 3 weeks out, I see him on TV while eating breakfast and have never seen him in person again, nor without his piece which was OBVIOUSLY a piece. Just couldn't let go of that horrible wig he had and almost like body dysmorphic patients who think they look bad when the don't, this guy was absolutely certain his wig was natural looking. Dr. Lindsey So much for our agreement and a plan for 2 cases and good coverage for the anterior 2/3s of his head.
  4. Blake did a great job of real doctor talk explaining this. As a farmer...I'd refer Wibbles to my plant video. You'll see fine and fat plants getting "fue'd" half way through. HT is just fancy agriculture. That's probably why I like it. Dr. Lindsey
  5. Sean is right on the money. Nobody makes EVERYONE happy. On Friday I saw 3 perturbed guys, ALL 3 from the same clinic...ALL 3 said they'd only seen great reviews of that clinic online..not on a hair forum mind you.... Now all 3 are doing the research they should have done a year ago. As I've posted MANY MANY times, every year we do roughly 130 strips. And every year we have 1, maybe 2, that just don't grow well. And we always have 5 or 6 guys who do such poor cleaning that they either pull out some hair or let crusts buildup and auto extract grafts.... So why don't those 1 or 2 cases grow? I have no idea as we do one a day...they are not getting rushed at the end of the day when we're all tired... and we do all cases the same way. Well to some extent patient physiology plays a role...thin weak hair in general would seem more likely to suffer from perioperative stress than fat hair...but honestly our "guy" last year who got what I would call a poor result...had no obvious reason. He has fat middle eastern hair, he came multiple times during the week and did above average cleaning, and I don't know of any thing he did to screw it up.... Now he of course has lost faith in HT, and probably us...but I can not MAKE it grow. I know nothing for certain, but I do know odds. ODDS are that if any patient goes to an office with a good consistent track record, and follows the instructions, that they will, on average, get a good result. Probably 95% likely or so if they go to a truly good office. But most practices out there offering hair as a niche...are not truly great offices at hair. And even 95% is not 100%. So if you are shopping and the ads or chatter keeps talking guaranteed and perfection and stuff that sounds too good to be true. Well, it probably is too good to be true. Same thing applies to virtually all of life's big decisions. Same advice I try to beat into my kids. Dr. Lindsey
  6. This medical doctor walked in last week now 6 months out. I put him up to show what a fine hair'd guy OUGHT to look like at 6 months. Many of these guys, this guy included, then inquire about timing for the second case. Now its possible to do it right away at this point, BUT, as most of these fine hair'd guys will need a couple of hundred singles placed to bolster their hairline...I think its best to wait until everything is growing so I can know where and where not to make slits up front. Recall that no matter how tightly we pack slits at the front...most people can benefit from more frontal singles at at second case. AND since those singles are useless in the crown...we'd have to put 2 in a slit to get any bulk...why not "spend" them up front. I suggest this to just about all 2 case guys, but ALWAYS to fine hair patients. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  7. In this video, I show a fine hair FUE in a guy with really weak hair that we've done before successfully...and know that his weak hairs grow reasonably well with FUE extraction. Compare that to a younger black guy's robust donor hair which OUGHT to grow even better. The cases were done last week so next Thanksgiving I hope to update this story. Now I'd put my money on the thicker hairs growing better, but U in FUE means unpredictable. In any case, this adds to the basic education prospective patients should know before they sign up for surgery. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA (I have several related videos that I've posted on the forums that also would provide the newbie with useful information)
  8. The success of FUE at ALL clinics is variable. I keep hearing patients come in and say Dr. Bernstein says 40 % but I have no idea if that is true. I think they are referencing a one or 2 patient review from a few years ago. I can tell you that at a couple of clinics its close to zero...as I keep seeing patients from them...of course the legions of happy people who have given them a positive yelp never stop in to talk to me. At my place....well I think it depends on the patient's hair and scalp as much as anything. Take for example the comparison video that I'm putting up in a few days...it has a guy we did a last year with thin CRAPPY hair...who grew well, and we did a repeat case to work farther back AND a black guy with fat curly hair... My off the cuff guess is that the thicker hair will grow better and next Thanksgiving there will be a clearly better result in the black guy. BUT the crappy hair grew well...despite my warning to the guy not to do FUE last year....so clearly I'm not always right. As Dr. Feller says...U in FUE means Unpredictable. And the F means..... Dr. Lindsey
  9. Here's an update at 11 months, on my son, on whom we FUE'd a right temple scar. I posted pics at 4 months and he was home for thanksgiving at 11 months, sporting a short haircut with complete coverage of his scar. In fact..one can argue that he has too many hairs in the scar and the donor hairs are a little darker and wirier than the native hairs to this site. He's happy, as nobody notices it. Lastly, this is the perfect use for FUE. A person requiring a short haircut, who has beefy hair follicles, and a history of poor scarring. The video is: Dr. Lindsey
  10. This UK guy just emailed over some pics, now about 4 years out. He did a good job getting pics with different lighting and pulled back and natural. I'll send him a link and hopefully he can chime in. Dr. Lindsey The video is:
  11. In this video, I show you how we do FUE, how we need to hit the correct angle, avoid avulsing the root, and the need for relatively quick yet gentle work. The first few minutes are surgical technique of a 2nd FUE case on a VERY FINE HAIRED guy my age, who we did FUE on last year and simply wants more hair. The second part of the video is a few years old and shows me working with little plants to illustrate what I discuss in the first part. The video is: Enjoy. Dr. Lindsey
  12. Outstanding. I'm logging an hour a day on my guitar and have fantasies about putting the Posse back together and playing. Except when anyone watches me play my fingers get caught in the strings. You may have seen pics of our patients and me at various concerts. Here's a guy with me that we did 3000 grafts on, he got a 20 year younger girlfriend, now his wife... And several others have gone with Wendy and me to ZOSO and THE MACHINE, great zep and floyd tributes. Going again this Sat. Dr. L
  13. Here's another video of a guy who had low or maybe no yield from and FUE done by a reputable doctor. And I review our approach to these tough cases. Tough mainly because the patient no longer trusts the medical profession or hair transplantation. I see stuff like this weekly, often by NEWBIES to hair who've bought one of the main automatic systems and rent-a-techs, but I see it from everywhere. Now don't get me wrong, FUE has its place....just do your research PRIOR to leaping for what sounds like something that is too good to be true. The video is: And a recent guy we had to repair..same story...different head...is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  14. This interesting guy flew in last week for me to deal with his remaining scar. He's about 40, has really fine hair and had poor scarring and limited results from 2 surgeries before he got to me. We did his front and then he came in and we did a crown case...discussing how he might lose more hair and need to keep working back there.... Plus as many of you guys know...fine hair is tough, PARTICULARLY in the crown. But he looks great. The scar I excised looks good, we'll hit the remaining one today and hopefully get pics next year. The video includes his 18 month video too. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  15. Thanks Bill. Although I ramble a bit in the answers, its all stuff I'd want to know if I were in the consultation chair. Dr. L
  16. Voxman...you're alive. I haven't your posts in a while. Hey man, some 70 year olds are physiologically in their low 50s, and some 30 year olds are 60. I vividly recall the farm hand at our family farm, who at his ripe old age of 23 (although he looked about 45) had all of his teeth pulled as it was cheaper than going to the dentist yearly and buying toothpaste. His sister, aged 19, agreed and did the same... While he was only 8 years or so older than me chronologically, I'd be surprised if he made it to 50. Same is true in hair and even in facelifts. YESTERDAY I had 2 women come in with a guy we'd done 3000 grafts on. I had done a lift on lady 1, about 4 years ago...but she has skin that is not aging well....her friend, actually older, had great skin and features..she's simply blessed with better genes. I'd bet lots of money that in the next 10 years or so, we'll have real diagnostic tools that show your actual physiologic age and therefore recuperative powers, and likely candidacy for all kinds of surgery. I posted a guy a few months ago, that is a medical scientist who is working on all kinds of good stuff that he says will actually slow genetic degradation. You and I might be too old for that, but our kids will almost certainly have options to slow physiologic aging and improve quality of life after 60. Dr. Lindsey
  17. Here's a few older guys...say 45 and above, although that seems pretty young now that I'm 52. Case 1 is 48 year old after 3000 grafts with a pic at 3 years when I saw him at a concert. Case 2 is a 63 year old after 3000 grafts up front with fine grey hair Case 3 is a 64 year old with 3200 grafts fixing a comb over Case 4 is a 52 year old a year out from 3200 grafts of wirey hair but a big color contrast with his skin. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  18. I'll give it a try on the next thread. Its tougher now than with the OLD style of your all's site where we got to label each pic. Was kind of a pain to do..but would clarify stuff like this. Dr. L
  19. You guys may recall this nice girl, who'd had a poorly executed hairline case by a local group. Now...she is a bit of a tough case... She as very fine hairs, REALLY white skin, and a big color mismatch...all of which make a "homerun" tough. But, with proper packing and irregularization of the hairline, I think we can get a triple. Shoot, she's already to short-stop and its only 6 months. Remember, revision cases take a little longer so her final result is probably 10 months from now. Her video is here and includes her inital surgery at the end of the update: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
  20. We're redoing our website, so I've had the occasion to go through and sort some results. I'll post a couple of categories in the coming week. This is a couple of results in younger guys with at least 2500 grafts. Forgive the lighting, some of the results are emailed in pics from patients. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA Case 1 23 year old at 8 months Case 2 24 year old with 2500 grafts Case 3 25 year old with 2500 grafts Case 4 28 year old with 3000 (at 6 months) Case 5 29 year old fine hair indian with 3100 grafts Case 6 30 year REPAIR case with 3000 grafts. Dr. Lindsey
  21. He absolutely would look better with just a little more hair length to allow styling. We've had that discussion for years....and he'll agree, then have a few beers on a Friday night, shave his head, and email me he wants something more... But this guy is a decent fellow, I completely understand this kind of guy. I grew up with friends just like this. No he's not on meds. Any remote chance of interfering with his man-function is enough to keep him off meds. That said...his hair horse has left the barn. No amount of meds is going to do much for his head. Dr. Lindsey
  22. This video is long overdue. Finally, after 2 guys emailed and one called this week about how I want them to stretch...here's what I prefer. Obviously every doctor thinks his/her way is best...so check with your doctor, but if you are coming to me....this is what to do. The video is: Dr. Lindsey McLean VA
