  1. Thank you all for your comments and especially to Pupdaddy and GBU for their enthusiasm. When we are lucky to have a "good" case (like this patient) with an excellent donor area, it is obvious that the choice of an adapted technique together with the efforts from the patient and the long work are rewarded (more than 20 hours of surgery in two days). I'm posting some complementaries pictures of the intermediate situation at the first day.
You can notice that the front line is not finished at the end of the first day.
Actually, I knew that on the next day I would have more grafts of 1 hair and I preferred not to create artificially grafts because of the bigger grafts to come.
Also, we can notice the perfect integration of the graft into the skin after 24 hours only. I'm also posting some pictures of transplants. First of all, the petri boxes that show an important proportion of grafts of 3 and 4 hairs compared to the grafts of 1 or 2 hairs. Then, I show you the grafts in a close up view: they are relatively chubby which probably also explains the extremely high rate of re-growth. Finally, to answer the question of Zenmunk, The picture 4 shows the donor area, the first day of the surgery.
Unfortunately, the patient had it shaved so I do not have any picture of the original long hair area. But, the second picture with the long hair shows the situation at 7 months post op, it is impossible at this time to detect a decrease of the visible density in the donor area. This is also due to his very good donor area quality. More pictures will follow soon.
  2. Obviously, we have to adapt the size of punches to each patient. I do not use one size punch. I almost always use two sizes of punch for each of my FUE patient, one for the big grafts and another for the smaller ones which allows to extract a bigger number of grafts. I use the following principle: choosing the smaller size possible if the harvest of nice grafts of 3 or 4 hairs is possible with a minimal transection. In my opinion, it is better not to choose* a too small punch by definition. Because a too small punch* requires that the surgeon has to select the smaller follicles and on the other hand, it also increases the rate of transection. For the same number of grafts, the patient receives therefore less hair. This topic is still very controversial. I am part of the new ISHRS committee, the FUE research committee. And it is one of the questions we will actively discuss.
  3. This 40-year old patient was an ideal case : the donor area was very rich and the very lax*skin have allowed the FUE extraction with a very good quality. In April 2012, the transplant was performed in two days. 4037 grafts for 10,347 hairs were extracted and replaced on the entire anterior area which was totally empty. The re-growth is exceptional*and complete. The punch diameter used was of 0.9 mm which has allowed to harvest this very large number of hair. Indeed, the detail of the grafts is the following : FUE1: 777, FUE2: 918, FUE3: 1634, FUE4: 4708. So, 2.56 hair per graft. The use of a punch with an intermediate diameter of 0.9 mm rather than 0.8 or 0.7 mm allows a large harvest, rich in hair and poor in transection. The aspect of the donor area with long hair is perfectly normal after the first intervention. Of course, the picture of the shaved area taken during the last week shows the scars of the first two days of FUE. However it only becomes visible with hair shaved very short (less than 0.5 mm). I also present you two pictures that compare the situation the day after the transplant and*after 7 months when the patient came for the second intervention.* He decided to come back to perform a surgery on the crown area. This new*transplant graft has gathered more than 2000 grafts. The overall result of these two interventions will follow in a few months.
  4. This young 31-year-old patient received at the beginning of March, 2012 the equivalent of 3730 grafts for 7840 hair. In detail: 873 FUT1 1749 FUT2 873 FUT4 and 235 FUT4. The re-growth was very fast as after 5 months the situation was already very good and after 8 months excellent. I wish to all the readers all the best for the coming year! Dr Jean Devroye.
  5. This 32-year-old patient received a total of 2810 grafts for 6640 hair which represents 2,35 hair by graft on average. He had two surgeries with an interval of 9 months. The final photos were taken 20 months after the first surgery. The result is very natural and scars are undetectable with short hair. The photo in close-up shaved hair shows clearly the difference between the already extracted left zone and the intact right zone.
  6. 25-year-old patient presenting a traumatic scar in the mustache. Extraction of beard hair under the chin and transplantation in the scar with equalization of shape of the mustache on both sides. FUE 217.
  7. 39-year-old man who wished to cover the vertex. He received 2631 grafts FUT for 5718 hairs (252 FUT1, 1718 FUT2, 574 FUT3, 77 FUT4). The result after of a few months is very satisfactory. The treatment of the vertex requires a certain caution. Here are the main rules to respect: do not to choose a patient less than 35 years old, indeed weigh the balance between the donor zone and the recipient zone. Do not try to obtain a maximal density. Transplant on a wide surface, by taking the lead over the baldness which risks to evolve in periphery.
  8. 65-year-old patient, having had a FUT transplant 5 years ago. Here are his results photographed recently. He has just undergone a new transplant intended to fill the region of the vertex. The number of grafts reached was 2872 grafts for 6333 hair (623 FUT1, 1299 FUT2, 733 FUT4, 193 FUT4, 3 FUT5 et 21 doubles). The curly texture of his hair allows to obtain a very good visible density at the first attempt.
  9. Here is a patient who comes with two unfavourable factors : an important thinning and fine hair. However thanks to an important density in the donor area and to a very good elasticity, we have reached 4002 grafts for 9060 hair. The result in 9 months of this only intervention is extremely natural and the impression of density is very strong. I did not see again him again in consultation, which explains that the background is not the same on the result photos. Details of the cut : FUT1 628 FUT2 1853 FUT3 1245 FUT4 248
  10. Eyebrow transplant with a mix of one hair and two hair grafts; 250 grafts on each side. The curvature of the hair is placed in the adequate sense, which is essential for this type of work
  11. Patient with an ideal situation before. Hair are curled, the donor zone is excellent. The transplant realized one year ago contains 3613 FU for 7754 hair (799 FUT1, 1834 FUT2, 833 FUT3 and 137 FUT4). The regrowth was extremely fast, the result after six months was already very promising. This patient will not need any other transplant on the front of the scalp. It will probably be necessary to schedule a second transplant for the vertex. The scar is excellent.
  12. Thirty -five year old patient, working in a TV channel and so very attentive to the balding zone either on his frontal area or on the higher part of his vertex. He has received 1928 grafts for a total of 4863 hair. A total of 983 grafts have been put on the vertex. For reasons of privacy, only the vertex results will be shown but the results on the front are also wonderful. The density that we has been reached is absolutely sufficient after only one intervention, thanks to the excellent diameter of his hair and to the average density obtained (40-45graft/cm2) according to the zones. A trichophytic suture has been used and the scar is also very nice.
  13. Hello everybody, Please find here an interesting case of hairline restoration on at hirty-nine year old patient, with a very clear forehead, wishing to cover it as well as her temples. An important dense packing was used to reach a sufficient density after only one surgery. A large number of single grafts gives a very natural result. The patient is very pleased with the result. The final grafts distribution is as follows : 767 Follicular Unit 1, 899 FU2, 1137 FU3 et 217 FU4. Total : 3020 grafts for 6844 hair i.e. 2.27 hair/graft

  15. This 48 years old patient has undergone two surgeries in January and December 2010. His first surgery was described on the following post: http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/158635-dr-devroye-md-47-years-old-patient-fut-excellent-results.html In total 5870 grafts were transferred during both surgeries for a number of hairs of 14060. During the second surgery, the crown was grafted, respecting carefully the original direction of the patient’s hair. The final result is very natural. Details of the surgery: 1st surgery: 3612 grafts for 8718 hairs - FU1 532, FU2 1496, FU3 1149, FU4 428, FU5 7 2nd surgery: 2258 grafts for 5342 hairs- FU1 281, FU2 1014, FU3 773, FU4 190
  16. Hi everyone, Thank you for your comments. The number of grafts transferred during the second surgery was 2186 grafts for 5721 hairs. More or less 1700 grafts were used for the crown. Best regards, Dr Jean Devroye Md
  17. Please find here a very good example of the result we can obtain with thin hair used in abundance. This 49 years old patient received 2694 grafts for 6529 hair (382 FU1, 1117 FU2, 867 FU3, 328 FU4). The density obtained is very good and looks very natural. The second surgery took place lately and we covered the back area and reinforced slightly the front area. The last series of pictures shows the donor area before and after the first surgery. We cannot see the loss of density linked to the first surgery.
  18. This patient is losing his hair since 9 years. Since then, he is using Minoxidil 5%. The indication is very good because the hair is thin and curly. Nevertheless, the density was not so rich. We only transferred 2513 grafts. The ratio between the number of hair and the number of grafts is only 2.18. The patient received 2513 grafts for 5489 hair. The repartition is as follows: 458 FUT1, 1259 FUT2, 676 FUT3 and 120 FUT4. The regrowth was incredibly fast. The result after 5 months is already very encouraging. Another intervention is foreseen soon; the aim will be to cover the crown.
  19. Nine months ago, indeed, I advised the patient to use Minoxidil 5% and Finasteride. Then he had the surgery, and after three months, he started the treatment. Obviously, it is difficult to make the difference between the surgical treatment and the medical treatment. When the patient will come for a consultation I will be able to pronounce me on this topic.
  20. This patient is 36 years old. He came for a consultation which has shown a slow and progressive increasing of the baldness happened in the last ten years. He has been using Minoxidil 5% since 2009. He prefered to have performed the surgery with the FUE technique, even though I had suggested him to adopt the FUT technique which I find more appropriated to his situation. Here are the reasons why: the donor area is very dense, he is not going to cut his hair short, the budget is not the same, and the FUT will give a better result in this case. FUT - 31/01/2011 Number of grafts: 3174 Number of hair: 7351 Repartition: FUT1 = 565 ; FUT2 = 1316 ; FUT3 = 958 ; FUT4 = 320 ; The final result is amazing. By the way, the post op pictures come from the patient's camera that's why the angle is different.
  21. A very good candidate of 54 years old, with slightly curly hair, with a good density on the donor area ((90 FU/cm2) and a good elasticity. Thanks to those favorable factors, the FUT results were of 3613 grafts for 7754 hair (799 FU1, 1834 Fu2, 833 FU3, 137 FU4). The regrowth was very fast that's why we have this wonderful post-operative result after 6 months...
  22. The final number of grafts reached for this surgery was 3855 which represents 9022 hair.
  23. The change obtained in only one session is amazing. It is a beautiful example of what we can reach when we perform a hair transplant with a high number of grafts. We manage to reach a number of hair between 8000 and 10.000, which gives incredible results. This patient was obviously in a favourable situation: a good density carrying between 90 and 130 FU/cm2 on the lateral and occipital level. On the other hand, he accepted to shave completely his recipient area which has made easier the concentration of grafts. And one more thing: he had thick hair. The grafts transferred were: 1H: 528 2H: 1865 3H: 1110 4H: 294 5H: 17 Double grafts: 38
  24. It is a young patient of 30 years old. He's loosing his hair since more or less ten years. The indication is good, the original density of the donor area is excellent. I performed an FUT in January 2010, with 3428 grafts for 7964 hair. The situation at six months is very good and the patient is so happy of the result obtained.
