Whilst you are quite right, you can graft into the scar with FUE in the future in necessary, and this is peace of mind. But I would suggest that in doing so, depending on the individual and their scalp elasticity and personal response to healing, you are using precious grafts that could be used elsewhere on your head. So the motivation to choose FUT due to "possibility of "larger" session sizes", is floored if then afterwards you must use more grafts to correct/enhance the appearance or lack there of it of your scar.

Also, many of the best FUE surgeons are now comfortable in grafting 3000+ grafts when appropriate in one day, so over 2 days a significantly large session can be achieved.

Again, the choice is personal but it is important to understand and consider the facts and what is realistic and what is possible.

What about for those of us who are young and have a family of high NW patterns? Should we go with FUT first or FUE with the possibility to buzz down if need be in the future?

It sure can.  Outcome is worse if bigger punches are used to extract.  Makes it difficult during FUT to “slither” tissue if impacted area is extracted via strip later.  Lots of things to think about.  There are a lot of folks that will be ready to take advantage of the situation. Best is to think it through, if planning strip in the future, it is probably best to get strip first then fue later.  Best of luck.  Hope your journey is pleasant.

But the grafts can still be extracted after FUE via strip right? I was told by a leading surgeon that does both FUE and FUT that I could utilize future procedures with strip if I chose FUE first.

FUE does make it more difficult, but not impossible. If you plan on maximizing your donor always opt for strip first. That said, if you’ve already had FUE you can still have a strip. It will just make it more difficult for the cutters dissecting the strip.

Thanks Melvin. Do you know if there's a general rule of how much less grafts you can get with FUE vs FUT?

Location, pricing, available dates, video results, Joe Tillerman, graft numbers (2200-2600) which I think is fair because I will need two more HT's in the future. Where are in Turkey and some in Belgium quoted me 3500-5000 😮

Also Dr Lupenzula is part of all the governing HT bodies. I had a video skype consultation with him, saw a few of his interviews on The Bald Truth, and with Joe Tilerman.

I am based in the UK and overall finally I felt comfortable with Dr Lupenzula. He does most of the procedure and takes a Dr driven approach.

Finally, I just created a spreadsheet of all the pro's and con's on each Dr on my shortlist - lined up the facts then solidified my decision on who made me feel the most comfortable.

How did you decide on FUE vs FUT for your procedure?

This hair transplant website is an excellent resource to search for a surgeon.  I always encourage everyone to choose a doctor who they are most comfortable with.  For me.... I was most comfortable with Carolina Hair Surgery after a consultation with Dr. Vories and finding out that he extracts and places every graft himself.  His technicians are very valuable and provide wonderful prep and support throughout the process.

The cost is also excellent at $4-5 per graft.  I had 5,250 grafts done as a Norwood VI over two and a half consecutive days.  My website is posted below and filled with photos and videos of my complete journey.

I’m always surprised that many folks just choose a surgeon closest to them.  When you’re spending $8-10,000 on a hair transplant of 2,000+ grafts, why not spend another $350 on a plane ticket and enjoy a mini-vacation prior to the surgery (in my case Charleston/Mount Pleasant, South Carolina).

Do your homework on this website and best of luck to you.

Thanks John! I like Dr. Vories and he's on my top list of surgeons right now.

However, I'm 29 and a worried about my future balding pattern so I'm still in the deciding phase of FUE vs FUT.

If I were to go FUE, I think I would choose him.

HI everyone. I've been lurking on the site off and on since 2014. Back then I decided on a particular surgeon but then I noticed a lot of their results were suddenly subpar so I backed off. I then decided to go with another surgeon, and even had the online consultation done, but then they also started to get some subpar results, so I backed away from them as well. So now I want some advice of who to go with. Im 40 years old, NW5 and was told with my previous online consultation I would need need 5000 grafts and that I had around 6500-7000 in the donor area. My preference is FUE. I contacted Hasson Wong but since Im in Australia they would charge me in US dollars which would amount to over $50k aud all in, which is really taking it to another level. In Candian dollars it was closer to 35k aud, which Im comfortable with. So I need advice on which surgeon can perform a large FUE session who produces consistent results. Traveling is not a problem.

    Any responses greatly appreciated.

Are you looking at North American clinics only or European as well?

  7. I haven't seen a whole lot of patient testimonials for Dr. Vories yet he seems like a good choice for FUE.

He's located in the US, has fair pricing, does the entire procedure himself and seems knowledgeable.

Does anyone have any experience with him?

If you plan on doing both I’d do FUT first. FUE thins the donor area meaning that it can be hard to hide strip scars. The other way around you could even finish up by FUEing some grafts into the strip scar

Hey Aftermath, thanks for the info. I actually just finished reading your thread and thoroughly enjoyed the good progress.

Do you ever worry about having the scar? Do you ever wish you didn't have one or does it never cross your mind?

I think FUT with a surgeon who is really good with scars would be a safe bet. It varies from person to person, but a bunch of FUT recipients have been able to shave their sides pretty short (I made a thread polling people about this and many have said they’re able to get down to a 2 or 3 without the scar being visible... though some are unable to go below a 4 or 5). I’m about your age and was set on FUE until I realized how good the scars can look when you go to a top doctor.

I often hear that FUT followed by FUE once that’s expended is the best way to optimize graft harvesting in the long run. I would ask a few doctors their thoughts on that, as it may have changed now that FUE have improved in recent years.

Hey RecessionProof, thanks for your input! Your thread on the cut was informative.

Here's the link for anyone who wants to look at it:

As for FUT then FUE, one of the doctors I spoke to said that FUE can still produce the same level of yield as full on FUT would (that donor depletion was overblown). I have a consult coming up with a few more doctors, but I'm currently leaning towards FUE for my first procedure.

I don't think having FUE first would negatively impact a second procedure if I had one from what I've read so far.

By considering FUT you now have MORE supply to work with,  You can exhaust all FUT first and then have FUE available should you need it in the future.  When you visit with the doctor, have him check elasticity.  Ask him how many grafts lifetime he believes you have and make a record of it.

Hi Lasercap, thank you for the great information!

My doctor said I potentially have about 9000 grafts lifetime, but is not sure how that will be affected as I continue to age.

Now, the photos on the right.  It seems you have diffused thinning throughout the entire head.  And it seems it is a large pattern.  If you were to do nothing, it is likely you will end up 6-7.  Do you have family history of hair loss?  What pattern do they have?

My family does have a history of hairloss. Most of them are NW5 on my father's side, and NW6 on my mother's side. There are a few who are NW1/NW2 (like my brother who's older than me). I've been told I'm an NW3.5

For the doctor that suggested doing grafts in the crown, I would run away as fast as I could.

He suggested that we can possibly improve the crown area, but not actually go all in on the crown and that the hairline would be the focus. Sorry, I should have clarified that.

Thanks again Lasercap, FUT is definitely something to consider. I prefer having a shorter hairstyle which FUE would be great for, but who knows how many more grafts I'll need in the future. I've spent about a year researching this and still haven't come to a conclusion.

  11. Hello everyone, I'm 29 years old and have been balding since I was 18.

I'm looking for some advice on my HT procedure. I'm still undecided between FUE and FUT at the moment, mostly because of the potential for future hairloss concerns.

I've had consultations with FUE and FUT doctors in the US. Both have suggested 2000-2500 grafts on the front and about 1000-2000 grafts in the crown area.

I'm fairly certain I will need future procedures as my family tends to be NW5/NW6. However, I've been diligent with Finasteride and Nizoral for 5 years so that has definitely helped stabilize my hairloss.

    My question:

Should I get FUE first? I tend to wear my hair short on the sides and back, but if FUT will  be better for me, I can live with longer hair. Although, I don't see why someone can't do FUE then FUT afterwards (I always hear Strip first then FUE).

I would probably opt for FUT if I needed a second operation but I imagine that happening in my late 30s.

Also, I've been told an FUE for me would be a 2-day operation if 3,000 grafts or more.

I have attached pictures at the bottom. One is with a short haircut which I like (a #1->#4 fade) and the other with my hair grown out.

    Thanks for any advice!

Both great choices! Shapiro seems a little more conservative between the two, though truthfully it’s hard to judge because I haven’t seen many recent results either.

Cooley’s work in his recent videos is super aesthetic, and he does a lot of great no shave hairline work if that’s your thing.

Thanks! I think I’m going to go with Cooley

I went to NC on a Wednesday, the procedure was on Thursday and left town the next Wednesday which I will make it 7 days with overnight stay.

The travel back was fine. I had the saran wrap under a beanie and I even sprayed a couple of times during the flight. The doctor offered a second spray bottle as long as I would use it, and I did use it. I continued the saran and spray for about 10 days after. I am pretty sure it was an overkill, but I was off work anyway so it was easy to do. Plus, in December no one will bat an eye if they see you with a beanie.

Thank you! Good to know what I might be going through.

I'm worried about walking through the airport with a saran wrap stuck to my head, but I think hiding it in a cap/beanie might be a good idea

  14. Hi everyone, this is my first hair transplant procedure so I've been doing a ton of research into potential surgeons.

So far I've narrowed the choices down to Shapiro and Cooley.

I really like Cooley because he does much of the grafts himself, doesn't seem sales-y and has a track record of happy customers.

Dr. Shapiro also has many of the same qualities although I've seen less results from him on the forums from actual customers.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm located in TX so I will have to travel.

    Thanks!
