  2. Updated: 12:05 PM EDT Report: Many Mexican Candies Contain Lead SANTA ANA, Calif. (April 25) - More than 100 brands of candy sold in California, most of them from Mexico, have tested positive for dangerous levels of lead in the past decade and little has been done about it, a newspaper reported. In nearly every case, the candy - mostly marketed to Latino kids - stayed on store shelves and no action was taken against the Mexican manufacturers, the Orange County Register reported in Sunday's editions, citing state and federal records. The public was rarely informed of test results, the newspaper found. "Children are eating poison," said Leticia Ayala, of San Diego-based Environmental Health Coalition, a nonprofit group that urged the state to better regulate Mexican candies. State officials said they lack the resources to tackle the problem and have little jurisdiction over Mexican candy manufacturers. "We have a lot more responsibilities than looking for lead in candy," said Jim Waddell, chief of the state Health Department's Food and Drug Branch. Lead poisoning can cause brain and nerve damage and result in intelligence and behavioral problems, particularly in children. Concerns about lead poisoning led to a ban on lead-based house paint in the 1970s and on lead compounds in gasoline in the 1980s. The state Department of Health Services has conducted more than 1,500 tests on Mexican candy since 1993 and found high levels of lead in one of every four samples, the newspaper reported. As many as 15 percent of California children who suffer lead poisoning - about 3,000 over the past three years - have eaten Mexican candy, according to state statistics. About three-quarters of them are Hispanic. The government did little to release the information to the public, the paper said. For example, it knew of high lead levels for years in Chaca Chaca, a popular Mexican treat made from apple pulp and chili powder, but no public warnings were issued until last month. The Register conducted its own tests on 180 samples purchased over the counter in Southern California, an 32 percent of the tests showed high levels of lead. The newspaper sent reporters to Mexico, and reported that raw ingredients were carelessly tainted with lead before being shipped to factories, where unsafe manufacturing procedures were commonplace. Mexican manufacturers said they had no knowledge their candies contained dangerous levels of lead until contacted by the newspaper. 04/25/04 11:24 EDT

  4. East Coast... you dont have to beg...really!..lol... If your above assumption is correct, then thats the first I've heard of density %'s being computed that way..EVERYthing I've heard has been that sometimes grafts dont even START popping until the 4th month or later..i seriously doubt that my new hairs when they sprout, are at only 10% of their eventual density....and everything I've read here has told me that the grafts themselves can take up to a year to sprout...the "thickness" of the hairs is what I believe youre referring to..and this happens over time after the hairs pop the skin...
  5. Amazing..Bosley has been sending these mailings out since December!...I visited them once ..in 1996 or so..and somehow they STILL have me in a database...so i spose theyre contacting anyone theyve ever had call them or contact them... and the sad thing is, I bet they generate a bunch of business with it, especially considering the growth in cosmetic surgery just from the show "Extreme Makeover"....
  6. stephen.. on "average", the grafts start popping around the three month mark...then probably pop 10% a month after that...this is just a general rule of thumb based on a lot of postings here...so basically, you could still not see an individual graft pop for a year... also, some individuals pop as early as six weeks..other could take up to five months to see any of their grafts break the surface...
  7. Ditto... bosley will charge you twice as much as much better surgeons...and not give you anywhere near the good results that good surgeons will.. Cancel your procedure and read up on the good surgeons noted here...
  8. Eddie... I thought like you did before i looked into all this..i thought, "better to have "some" density everywhere, then have great density up front, and a wasteland on the crown"...but, that was ignorant thinking on my part for a couple reasons... 1 - you probably dont want to have to go back to a previously grafted area, and graft more into it if you can help it...theres always the risk of damaging the existing hair..why risk it? 2 - when the surgeons recommend starting at the front and working back, they REALLY know what theyre talking about..a great frontal hairline with avg to good density makes ALL the difference in the world..most people wont see your crown being barren...another reason is that perhaps, they can shrink the crown a bit in the same session while doing your front..that way you could do a second session later to just finish off the crown...your existing hair if grown out, could help cover your crown area in the interim too.. you dont say how old you are, but that makes a difference if youre still losing hairline and such..a BIG variable...that might change the above approach altogether obviously..but if your hair loss has stabilized, id go for it..yeah, finances are always an issue for everyone, but believe me, its more than worth it to get as much as you can at once..hell, every bank in the country offers low interest visas now...refinancing your house is a good option too!... just some things to think about from someone whos been down the same road...
  9. Eddie... is there a reason youre limiting yourself to 2000 grafts?...
  10. mini and micros...were circular plugs of skin that were just bored out of one spot and put in a circular hole pre-bored in another area of your scalp...the hair counts in these plugs could be as high as nine to 12..or higher...picture a greenskeeper changing the pin location on a green by removing a plug of grass and dirt, then putting the cup in its place..resulted in doll hair looking scalp, especially along the hair line where its most noticeable... FU's are natural groupings of hair that are found in your scalp..either 1,2,3,or 4 hairs per grafts..under a microscope you can see how many hair are sort of "rooted" together in a sense..technicians then cut these natural grouping down to where no unnecessary skin is used....the receptor sites are small slits as well..hopefully depth controlled, which then accept these FU grafts quite tightly...no skin is "removed" at the donor site, merely a small slit is cut....thus allowing less trauma to the scalp, a tighter fit, less bleeding..and definitely a more natural look...like sliding a letter into an envelope...
  11. real easy way to do it is with Microsoft Paint... 1 - save your large pic file as a .bmp format.. 2 - go to Paint, and open this new .bmp file 3 - hit "Ctrl-W" and this will bring up a window that allows you to adjust vertical and horizontal "stretch"...in effect this reduces the size of the file...depending on your initial file size, try 50% at first to see if this does it 4 - save your file 5 - open the new .bmp file, and then save it as a .jpg file...jpg formatting will reduce it even further..
  12. nike...you havent washed your hair in two weeks?...ewww...or is it that you havent rogained in two weeks..if you stop using rogaine, you will regress and start losing your hair again....missing a couple days wont hurt probably, but two weeks will likely cause shedding...you want to do your rogaine twice a day too... also, definitely get yourself a proscar prescription..its even better at keeping the hair youve got, and sometimes even restoring some thats weak ...
  13. Charlie.. you should have really gotten this information from your doctor before you went home. Who did your surgery?? A number of surgeons recommend Grafcyte, it's a wound healing spray...pretty pricey though..if you dont have any, pick up some steamed distilled water and spray that on your hair to keep your scalp moist and free of infection... if you cant get this info from your surgeon,`then dont rub your grafts for 3-4 days...i believe my doctor advised me not to even get the scalp wet for 48 hours..then to just gently pour warm water over it in the shower..after 4 days or so, you can GENTLY rub your scalp softly, to loosen some of the scabs off...they will eventually dry up and fall off on their own..keeping the scalp moist helps stop the itching from the skin drying and flaking off..
  14. with the new software "upgrade", for some reason, the upgrade didnt work quite right...no pics from old posts will show...and the "search" tool only recognizes posts after April 1 of this year...supposedly they are working on a fix...
  15. Kane,.. most recently, their prices were $4.50 for the first 1500 grafts, $2.50 for grafts above 1500... Also, they comp you up to $400 for your flight..they also put you up at a very nice hotel for free... They are quite good at what they do..definitely worth considering..
  16. Good luck Fed...! Hey, at the very least, this forum paid for your vacation since youre not wasting your money with MHR! Forget the head shot pictures..you owe us some South Beach "charm" shots..send your wife to the store or something, and put that camera to work!...
  17. 4head... the first thing you have to do is stop worrying, that causes follicles not to grow.. just kidding..Bosely is well known as a "hair mill" per se..spending millions on tv advertising, while not really caring all that much about an individual patient...and you must have gotten their "sale price" of $6 a graft...the BEST surgeons charge between $3.50-$4.50 a graft for a "strip" transplant, Fue will run you quite a bit more... Bosley's recent new tv ads say they are using "follecular units", and if so, that would be a change for them..if you witnessed a few technicians or nurses carving your donor strip under a very high powered electron microscope, then youre better off than you would have been 5 years ago at Bosley...what did they tell you about what you would be receiving?..if they used words like "minigraft" or "micrograft" then those will look a bit more "pluggy" possibly as these are much larger grafts in terms of hair count... its good if you could take some pictures of yourself as well..that way a lot of people can tell you how things are looking over time, etc...
  18. patience garyr...im almost to month 4..and i can tell you that the first 2-3 months basically suck..lol..after that, it starts to get pretty interesting and fun.. Don't be envious Gary..HW are one of the best, thats for sure..but there are plenty of others out there getting great results as well...who did yours?
  19. 4Head... most people on this forum would shy away from getting their grafts done by Bosley...maybe your results will be ok, we'll just have to wait.. But its pretty much acknowledged that Bosley is not a first tier choice....and they are far more expensive than the best HT clinics..by the way, how much did you spend for your 1250 grafts?..$6-8 per graft??.... most of your growth will appear in months 4-6...some get it early, as early as 6-8 weeks..in others it could take up till month 4 or 5 for the start of growth..rough estimate is that you can figure on about 10% of the grafts popping up each month, starting in month 3...but again, thats just an average...1250 grafts isnt much anymore, so it could be that they will be somewhat less noticeable than a larger graft session...
  20. Havhair... hopefully, its not the follicle youre seeing..but merely some skin shed, which is normal after HT surgery...if you dont see what looks like a small rice kernel with a hair sticking out of the end, then youre probably doing just fine... Patience..the first two months basically suck...but then, the magic begins..its quite cool actually!
  21. SouthCarolina.. i never used the link youre talking about..i just used the color coded file envelope method..if you look in the first column of the list of threads, a yellowed file folder indicates one you havent read...sometimes its not as accurate as it should be, but it works fairly well so far....
  22. someone really hosed this upgrade..if you do a "SEARCH", it only recognizes posts after April 1.....and no pictures posted prior to April 1 will appear! PATTTTT!!..fire your webmaster!
  23. ok..anyone else really happy with this new software upgrade to the forum?..at least thats what it looks like...apparently, someone didnt do as much testing as they should have prior to the upgrade...no pics?..lol... anyone have any personal influence with Pat or his Webmaster that we can appeal to go back a version on the software???...
