  1. old transplant clinic for a "consult". I was curious to see if they changed their techniques with the times in the past 20 years and it doesn't look like it. My questions.... Q. What is a typical "large" session, and how many grafts is that> A. A large session ends up being about 2400 hairs, which is 800 grafts. It costs $6,000. Accoriding to this gentleman, a lot of clinics are calling one-hairs "grafts" but hairs grow in 3's so that's how they take them. Q. Do you use microscopes? A. No, they actually get in the way. The reason some clinics use microscopes is to cut grafts into more grafts - thus the 2000 graft session, etc. Q. Is it possible to do a one-pass session? A. No, these clinics will say so but you'll always need more than one session. I think those guys were ok back in 1990, but it looks like they are basically still doing the same procedures from what I could tell. They've got some local (Southern) celebrities advertising for them though, showing their transplants.

  3. I would say with your loss, at least a session with 2000 grafts would be 'normal'; and you'd need a couple of those in my opinion. But, if you can go back in a year or so and get a another couple of thousand you will be in better shape - if this one turns out to your liking.
  4. another person about their hair transplant, when it's obviuos they've had one? And, after a couple of weeks when I get my good one, talk to them about the advances that have been made. I know a couple of guys casually that I'm 99% certain have had some plug work. I'm not sure if they can tell that I have, but probably. One is a teacher at my son's school. He has to slic them back in his front, and it looks pretty bad.

  6. I think he's considered pretty awesome. I'm sure you'll get some feedback throughout the day. Do you have any pics to post, and this might open up some suggestions from the crowd? Also, if you punch his name in the 'Search the Forum' button above, I bet there is a lot of posts about him.
  7. I have to say that my taste in music is wide; but has most often drifted back to rock-n-roll both old and new. It may be b/c I'm over 40, but I tell you that John Mayer's music is awesome! On second thought, it's not becuase I'm over 40 b/c I used to listen to some mellow music back in high school and college as well. If you haven't listened to his stuff (not just what they play on the radio), then I suggest you try it. And he can really play the guitar as well.
  8. I'd be plastering their name all over this forum, tv, radio, local newspapers, even the football forums. The heck with their privacy. Sometimes you've got to get rough. Once I had a disagreement with a major wireless network provider about some outrageous 'roaming' charges that were from a certain 2 mile radius - which happened to be where my office was. I finally told a V.P. I spoke with that every time I got in front of a crowd talking about customer service or ethics, etc. I would be recalling my incident with them and their company name. Not only did I get my situation quickly resolved, but also got a nice long apology letter.
  9. MISREAD ALERT!!! Actually, I said "the girl I married in 1991 wasn't a 10 then but she's a by-God 12 now!" Interpretation: I feel like she has improved with time.
  10. Man, I'm feeling you. I was once in a similar situation. Even this weekend on a trip with 15 guys; one of the younger guys of the group was astonished that I had actually went to the prom with this (now 40 year-old hot woman in his town). I jokingly said "I used to be good-looking." But the fact is, the chick I dated immediately before my "hot" prom date was much hotter. And the one in college was even hotter. I maybe mistakenly treated my college girlfriend like some of the others and broke it off much too early. Only this time, at 23, I found the women who were interested in me now weren't the same caliber women I'd grown accustomed to. Now I was thinning on top. And often, like you, it wasn't noticeable to others but damn I got tired of hearing the ladies who cut may hair say "you sure are thin on top to be so young...." I think my dwindling confidence was affecting me out on the trail very much, too. Not only was I not getting the women I used to; I wasn't even approaching them. My 20's were a blure after about age 24. Yes, I got married but honestly I would have preferred to wait a couple of more years - and sew some more oats. But I'll tell you this. That girl I married back in 1991 wasn't a 10 then but she's a by-God 12 now! She's held up amazingly well and at 40 is quite stunning. And she's very frugil with money, very supportive of just about anything I've ever wanted, and a heck of a mother to my sons. My point is this.... Those two or three girls I was serious with were fine, no doubt, but who knows what would've happened had I stayed with them. You know what else used to bother me? Every guy in the room wanting to pick them up. I might not have made it through that. Heck, I might be in jail right now! Now, my wife looks so good for a 40 year old every guy would like to pick her up. Except now, we're pretty set with the marriage, kids, etc. I don't worry about that too much. So, the moral to my story is sometimes things happen for a reason. Going bald sucks, but in the grand scheme of things I would rather live with a head full of 28-plug transplants and no eyes than to not live. My only advice is don't have a bad hair transplant, though. There are plenty of guys with very bald heads who can get fine women. Bruce Willis, Andre Agassi, etc. On most of our finest days, a bald (and old) Bruce Willis can get our girl. So, it ain't just all about the hair.
  11. While most of the ht docs say all patients should focus on the hairline and "fix what everyone sees first", my experience has been quite the opposite. My crown bothers me more than the receding hairline. Anyone else feel the same? It seems not to bother me as much as I'm looking people in the eye when the glance up to the hairline. However, when I'm sitting in front of someone, I get real self-conscious thinking they are looking at my balding crown. So, if God had given me a vote - I would have chosen receding harline over balding crown. Now, I know it's hard to cover the crown so I agree I might as well fix the front as best possible.

  13. Check out Alexander in Arizona or the guy in Vegas.
  14. Dr. Cooley doesn't require shaving. I would like to shave my down as I would think it better for sure, but the downside for me is of course the goofy-ass looks. I can't afford to slip out of sight for a month while it grows back. Heck, I'm still trying to get over taking three days off as it is.
  15. Have you noticed that other people don't notice ht's or wigs as quickly as we (those thinning) do? My wife didn't even notice when Guiliani wore that dead rat on his head. Or Paul Simon's either.
  16. I consulted with Doctor Griffin back 2.5 years ago at 39 years old, and he predicted I would continue losing hair. A lot, actually, if I remember correctly. However, he prescribed me a minoxidil / finersterid topical solution to apply daily at a steal at $40 per month. I'm just sayin.... FWIW, I'm using my last bottle this month and will order some Rogaine and Propecia.
  17. I was interviewed by a local reporter about a community project I was involved with. Man, from my 'bad' side too - which for me is where my hair parts. So, not only do I need some hair to fill it I think I also need a damn face-lift and lyposuction for about 30 pounds... Do any of the coalition docs do all three? Maybe a weekend session? I've got to get some weight off! BTW, I used the Dermmatch and have for a week but I still look thin. I don't guess I'll be good at the concealer thing.

  19. I'm going with Dr. Cooley in a couple of weeks, and I haven't met him yet. I emailed pics to Aileen, who is his asst., and she consulted with Dr. Cooley and we did an hour phone consult. They also offered to make an appointment to speak directly with the doctor on the phone (or in person if I wish). They recommend I come in late the afternoon before so I can meet Dr. Cooley and we can get a game plan together; as he starts at like 7 a.m. So, I'll go in the day before at 5:00. If there is a major difference in seeing me in person or on the pics we can adjust the gameplan then. I'm pretty educated now on this, and his reputation seems impeccable, so I think this is a good plan for me. He's about 300 miles from me so I'm driving in. I would think it will be similar with any doc, unless you have some special circumstances you want them to look at.
  20. You are struggling now.... The only thing I'd get out of Arkansas is a nice, 100-pound hog....or a chicken. (btw, I'm kidding)
  21. Dr. Cooley has had one, but I'm not sure by whom.
  22. In my opinion, if you've got a good looking head (and keep yourself in great physical shape) a shaved head looks damn good. Just try and keep a little tan on it. I think the way a guy with a shaved head dresses affects his appearance as well. As I've said before, I have a lot of investment professionals based out of NY, Boston, LA, Atlanta and Chicago who call on me who have shaved heads and look great! So, it can be done. Now, my post is starting to make me feel a little funny (not ha ha funny, but queer funny - as John Boy and Billy would say) so I'm leaving it......
  23. Call them and ask. This appears to be a philosophical stance as well with some clinics; with very different views on shaving the head. Personally, I would think it would help the end result to have the head shaved, but I'm with you as I'd like to move back into work without notice. Ideally, one would take off work for about a month to do this; but as somewhat of a workaholic that would be difficult for me.
  24. Consider yourself among the luckiest of hair loss victims if you're 28; and the thinness can only be seen in the sunlight!! Many guys who've come here before you were balding at 21. But anyway, I'm not a doctor but I'd say you should consider the procecia and Rogaine for a year or so since you are only 28. Second, check the Find a Surgeon button up top and look at the closest coalition doc to you. Do you mind going to Pakistan? How about Turkey? Those guys look to do great work. With the hair loss you've described, I'd bet you could move in and out of society within a week of a ht and remain unnoticed; as it appears you have native hairs to cover it. It takes four months for the transplanted hairs to grow, but your hair will be much fuller at about 9 months. Keep reading here. Check out the Hair Loss Questions and Answers tab above too, and visit some of the doctor's websites of which links are provided on this site.
  25. I think it looks great. But, I can see from your perspective (21 yrs. old) being somewhat underwhelmed. However, I'd bet if you were 40 years old and had made a similar transformation you'd be thrilled. You had quite a bit of thinning going on at a young age so I doubt you'll ever get back your 14 year old head. But still, I think it looks awesome!
