Looking for surgeon with success with Afro hair.

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm a 24yo male with hair with tight coils. I've been researching surgeons for a hair transplant for 2 1/2 years now. I started fin and minox and have had great results. However, it did not result in any growth. They really just halted my hairloss. I would say i am a Norwood3 right now.. Ive been quoted for approximately 2,000 hair grafts for approx. $9 a graft (seemed pretty steep to me) by doctor linkov located in New York and another doctor on the west coast where I am. I really do not want to leave the US for the procedure and am willing to pay a little more if necessary. My budget is no more than $12-$15000 at the max. For anything international I would have to buy two flights for my wife and I, a hotel, child care and we are both in Grad school which makes it hard to plan months in advance to coordinate everything. Best case scenario for me would be someone located in Southern California, however I would be willing to go anywhere on the west coast. I've look into Dr. Mohebi, Dr. Dauer, and Dr.Behnam, all located in Southern California. I've read good thing about Mohebi but people were saying he is at $12 per graft which is way out of my budget (Even the $9 a graft was a stretch for me). I havent seen any independent reviews of Dauer or Behnam to make me comfortable with picking them. Now that Dieps work has fell off a cliff , I'm having a hard time picking any doctor on the west coast. So if anyone has any suggestions to look into that would be greats. Located in the US and best case scenario on the west coast.

If you were to consider travelling to another country then you would get some much better options. For example Dr Bisanga, Dr Feriduni, Dr Lupanzula and @DrTBarghouthi most of us would have said Dr Mwamba too, however there has been quite a few recent cases which are not so good, for varied reasons. Spend time researching and seeing who actually is capable and consistent in putting out good Afrocentric results, preferably patient posted journeys.

Am sorry to say but your approach towards finding a good surgeon is wrong...never search for a doctor based on convenience of location factor ....this is a lifetime procedure and can't be undone and your donor is finite too plus afro hair is tough...

You are just 24 years old so you need a surgeon who can plan a future proof surgery as there is a high chance you will need a surgery or two in future as hairloss is tough to control for long..

You just started medication and imho you should give it full 12 months before you plan for a surgery...you should give more time to medication and see how it goes and than reassess your situation and plan accordingly...i know this is a boring advice but believe me this would help you....

And yeh you don't need to take your wife/family with you when you go abroad for a surgery...people can easily travel alone for this thing and you don't need any helping hand so don't worry abt that.i hope this helps you...best of luck ..

Agree OP should steer clear of Mwamba. The lack of growth is troubling and unfortunately the significant number of recent cases with lack of growth indicates a pattern....

Thank you, I will look into some of the doctors you listed. It seems like international might be the best option for me, which means I have a tough decision to make. Thank you!

Yeah I've seen some concerning posts about Mwamba. He would've been my top choice because he does have an office in Georgia which would have been great.

Thank you for the advice. International just seems like such a hassle but it might be a sacrifice I have to make. Do you know how many days I should stay after surgery before catching a flight back? Bisanga is a 13-16 hour flight for me, which I can imagine is too uncomfortable of a flight soon after the procedure. As for the fin and Minox, is it normal to see more growth after 6 months? Because at this point it's just halted, but no new growth.

I would recommend Dr Pekiner!

He’s extremely ethical and good person so if he can’t do it then he will say so.

I'm having a hard time finding some before and after for him, can you send me the link if you get the chance?

@Thehamman

Yeh its worth to have some inconvenience for our own betterment..you can easily fly back after 2 days or if you wish you can stary for 4-5 days...good that your hairloss is halted ....when someone can halt the hairloss progression its half the battle won...yeh you can see growth after 6 months...it takes more than an year to see the full potential of medication
