Senior Member ZeoRanger Posted March 26, 2015 Senior Member Share Posted March 26, 2015 Can someone explain why alcohol consumption post-op is allowed? My understanding is that the new grafts weakened for months after surgery and they basically feed on blood. So if alcohol (or other drugs/meds) enter the bloodstream, wouldn't that harm those frail grafts?
Senior Member TommyLucchese Posted March 26, 2015 Senior Member Share Posted March 26, 2015 I drank exactly one week post op. I was quite worried I've have too much and fall over and hit my head or something. Not sure about the science though! 2,000 grafts FUT Dr. Feller, July 27th 2012. 23 years old at the time. Excellent result. Need crown sorted eventually but concealer works well for now. Propecia and minoxidil since 2010. Fine for 8 years - bad sides after switching to Aindeem in 2018. Switched to topical fin/minox combo from Minoxidil Max in October 2020, along with dermarolling 1x a week. Regular Member SySperling10 Posted March 26, 2015 Regular Member Share Posted March 26, 2015 I looked into this prior to my transplant, it seems the alcohol rule is related to the thinning of the blood, and as a general rule of thumb, not good prior to any surgery. You'll see ranges any where from 10 days prior to 10 after, 3 days +or- is probably safe. But yes, hitting your head should be the worry.
Senior Member MusoInOz Posted March 26, 2015 Senior Member Share Posted March 26, 2015 Prior to surgery consumption of alcohol is a definite no no due to the thinning properties. Post op I'd recommend to wait at least two weeks to settle, this is not based on science but more so safety of Grafts. Senior Member voxman Posted March 26, 2015 Senior Member Share Posted March 26, 2015 I stopped alcohol about 4 days before, aspirin a week before. The night of my HT I had a glass of red wine. Now, I am on aspirin therapy and blood thinners so the only thing that I can for the next 11 months before my HT#2 is drink... I'm serious. Just look at my face.
