Uneven graft growth

I've also heard that this is quite common. Because more grafts were placed on the right side I assume that there was more loss on the right side. This indicates the blood supply is more compromised on that side and may take longer to recover to serve the transplanted hairs.

Good reasoning! icon_smile.gif

lovetospoon,

Being only at five months your growth actually looks pretty darn good. Uneven new growth is very common and I experienced it myself. Give it time, you have lots of new growth and thickening to come.

imissthebarber,

There is no indication that there is less blood supply on the one side that is growing slower but is more densely packed. We are not talking about a 2 to 1 ratio here.

The hairline in fact has a higher amount of blood flow than the rest of the scalp and when the scalp overall has a higher volume of blood flow than other areas of the body then the probability of the blood flow being compromised is even more less likely.

I had uneven growth that never recovered in some areas. Fact is that not all transplants get 100% yield.

In my case, the areas which were slow to grow also never reached the same overall density. Close shots and hair counts show less hair growing in these areas.

Since there is no physiological explanation why one area would grow less than another, and because this phenomenon is usually seen across "zones", the only explanation is that the technician working in the low density zone, was damaging or mis-planting grafts. If there was only one technician, this may be explained by different technique (or hand) used to plant on the other side.

The hair will continue to come in over 18 months, and the density may build to where it does not bother you, but in my experience, the phenomenon of "delayed, uneven growth" never fully evened out (in my case), and can only be explained by technician handling.

Jotronic,

I am very happy with my growth so far and I know it's still very early in the game. Even though the hairline is thinner on the right side it is still thicker than it was pre-op and my hair is much easier to style. I was just interested if others had experienced uneven growth and if it ever evened out for them.

Emperor,

How long ago did you have your HT and which areas had uneven growth?
