Dr. Carlos K. Wesley: 2100 FU with PRP to Frontal Third

Recommended Posts

A 29-year-old male received 2100 grafts to cover the frontal third of his scalp and seen again about 9 months postoperatively.

The grafts were incubated in the patient's platelet rich plasma (PRP) during the procedure prior to transplantation into the recipient area. This adjunct to hair restoration surgery has been suggested to increase the caliber and density of transplanted grafts as well as reduce postoperative erythema (redness) in the recipient area.

Very nice hairline.

Clearly his hair type lends itself to a great result with a modest number of grafts

4,312 FUT grafts (7,676 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2013

1,145 FUE grafts (3,152 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - August 2018

763 FUE grafts (2,094 hairs) with Ray Konior, MD - January 2020

Proscar 1.25mg every 3rd day

Thanks, 1978Matt and Future. We've seen increasing evidence that the incubation of grafts in chilled PRP has led to slightly earlier growth in our patient population. We'll keep and eye on this trend to get a better understanding of its true benefit.

Very nice result.

Dr Wesley do you use PRP on every patient? The reason i ask is, when i have asked other Drs about PRP the response i get is...No prove that it works but no harm in using it.

Could it just be that this patient is lucky in terms of early growth? or is there scientific prove that PRP works?

Cheers

Hi, james84.

Since 2006, there has been evidence that PRP, when used properly, can enhance the yield of transplanted hair follicles. Here's the link to Dr. Uebel's article and I've attached a screen shot as well because the link may only be accessed via our medical practice's firewall. This was published in one of the most well-respected peer-reviewed journals in our field.

MTL30, I can't begin to speculate on another doctor's numbers. Many of this patient's grafts that were placed well behind his hairline included more than 3+ hairs for added density. Fine 1s and 2s were used to establish his hairline.

SamSpade, thank you…I think!
