Senior Member olmert Posted April 4, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 4, 2012 I am going to have a transplant. So I wanted to do everything that would help. I have been told I have "average laxity." Every doctor I have asked has told me that laxity exercises before your first transplant probably won't do anything. Should I do laxity exercises before the transplant? If so, how much before, and for how long per day? Should I do laxity exercises after the transplant? If so, how long after, and for how long per day? If you have any citation to research on laxity exercises, please give a link.

Senior Member mattj Posted April 4, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 4, 2012 Most patients (including you if your laxity is average) will have enough laxity to ensure that everything about their first procedure goes fine. That includes the removal of the strip and the healing of the scar post-op. It's definitely not a bad thing to do the exercises, though. They won't do any harm and the extra scalp laxity can only help by putting less tension on the scar as it heals. You shouldn't do them after surgery, though. You could end up stretching the scar during the time when it's healing. You should only do the exercises after your transplant if you intend on having a second procedure (for whatever reason) and only after the scar has fully healed. Senior Member Dutch Posted April 4, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 4, 2012 Do them before but definitely not afterwards. I agree with Matt on what he said above. http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/blog/home-page.asp?WebID=2329
Bill - Seemiller Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Olmert, It can't hurt to do scalp exercises before your surgery. I recommend doing them at least 15 minutes a day for a solid month or two beforehand. While your laxity may be just fine, some evidence suggests scalp exercises can help to loosen up the scalp and increase your scalp's laxity. But please don't do any scalp exercises after surgery. Best wishes, Bill
Senior Member Jotronic Posted April 4, 2012 Senior Member Posted April 4, 2012 I'd personally like to know who told you that the exercises don't help. It is a FACT, that scalp laxity exercises, when performed properly, can GREATLY increase the donor laxity before surgery. At the very least they will make at least moderate gains. We see it all the time. In fact, when were were in Italy just three short weeks ago, a doctor came to see us not about getting a hair transplant but to talk about a paper that he is writing based on the scalp laxity exercises that we introduced. He says that he has been working on a way to improve donor laxity even faster and he came to discuss his ideas with us. They work, don't let anyone tell you differently. After your HT scalp laxity exercises are of course a bad idea. You'd have to wait six to eight months before you could safely resume them - if you needed to.
