MHR is overpriced and you're gambling with the doc you get. I would recommend canceling and going with a coalition doc. please do not become a story of regret.

with my first ht i went for a consult at mhr in new york. they were very salesmen like. i also went to see a doctor who had a small private practice. i went with him because he felt more personal and he was far less expensive. so that was the extent of my research. as it turned out the smaller guy was a con man and i ended up getting a lackluster ht result. i then did my due diligence after finding these forums.

now, here is the problem with what i did, and also the problem with with mhr: it's a roll of the dice when you don't find a doc that has tons of positive feedback on these forums. doing a search for the first guy i went to on here you'll find just a few reviews--all negative. do a search for your mhr doc. chances are you'll find nothing. now you may say, that's better than finding a few negative reviews. but the fact is, you have no idea what you'll get, and your donor hair, and money, are VERY PRECIOUS. your mhr doc might turn out to be a good doc, but without reviews on these forums you have no way of really knowing, and i wouldn't risk it. the docs touted on these forums are the best in the world and with ht surgery that's all you should consider. plus, these docs will cost you less than mhr. the docs i'm talking about are: shapiro, feller, rahal, alexander, h&w, and a few others. trust me man, i've spent the past 3 years reading about hts. you are lucky that you found this forum before rolling the dice with mhr (and i've seen enough of their bad work to know most of their docs aren't very good). best of luck to you and fel free to ask any more questions you may have...

mpkoons - I'm concerned that you have not done enough research to have the surgery done in three days! This site is full of good information and doctors. Have you met with any of the doctors recommended on this site? Dr Arocha, my doctor, has an office in both Houston and Dallas. Everyone else has already given you the advice I would give you but I have to add that you should postpone your surgery and make an appointment to talk to Dr. Arocha or at least any recommended doctor from this site. I went to Bosley before choosing Dr Arocha and I can't tell you how pleased with myself that I did that extra research and talked with Dr Arocha before I made such a huge decision. I normally don't make that strong of advice because I'm not a salesman but this is a case where I feel obligated to tell you to that before you do something that might be impulsive and also something you regret, pick up the phone and call a recommended doctor. There is one in your town.

But take solace in that you made the right move and posted your concerns just in time.

Fell free to PM me or ask me publicly any questions you may have about HTs or Dr. Arocha himself since I am a patient of his (and a satisfied one at that).

Nobody can tell me where they are hearing these horror stories about MHR?? I went to Bosley, hairclub, and neither of them could come close as to the professionalism that MHR gave me!! What are your sources of this information about MHR????

dont do it man.. your likely not ready for this yet.....MHR=bosley..... i dont care that they were nice with you and made you feel warm and fuzzy...they are salesmen trying to line their pockets. they do not give a shit about you. you will find that to be that case with MANY in this very dangerous indusrty. are you even sure surgery is right for you?? is it in your best interest to do this?? what exactly do you think can be achieved by hair transplants?? have you taken into account the scarring that never goes away and limits your ability to buzz your head?? have you taken into account future hairloss and how your transplant will look?? how about the fact that if you are, or go bald you will NOT be able to achieve true density througout your entire balding area. but rather the illusion of desity AT THE VERY BEST and ONLY after multiple HTs???

this is a procedure that has both helped and hurt many lives.. chosing a chain like MHR inproves your chances of being HURT by this decision.. the proof you want can be found through research.

just spit ballin here.

Sounds like my story. But what you really have to do after gathering information (patient reviews e-mailing past patients etc). Is get out there and see what the docs work looks like in person. Telling our experiences is just a start. Let your own eyes be the final judgement on what to do going forward.

1) Doctors - Their doctors are sometimes less experienced and you may not know exactly what you're going to get. The doctors here are steps above the "mill" doctors and each doctors' work is clearly documented.

2) Price - I noticed that their sales tactic was to undersell you on the amount of grafts at high rates so you would have to come back for more HTs. That was my experience anyway.

3) Relationship - With this type of surgery, and in this industry in general, you're going to want to feel a close bond to your doctor. You're putting down a lot of money and putting your face and looks in somebody's hands. The doctors I've spoken with on the site have all been extremely friendly and helpful, even the ones I've talked who I didn't have surgery with. And my doctor, Dr Arocha, and I talk at least once a month because he wants to know how I'm doing and how my hair is coming along. He WANTS me to come back to his office just for a check up. How many doctors can you say that about and do you think the "mills" are going to give you that type of attention? I can't say for sure but I would not think so because their job is to do as many HTs in a day as possible.

4) Reputation - Just do your research. Search on this site for guys that have had HTs done there and use Google too. You find all the answers you're looking for.

And what is the rush? You may have only one chance at this. Don't be impulsive. Meet with another doctor to get a 2nd opinion. Ask questions. Plan. Prepare.

People are going to be looking at your head for the rest of your life. Are you convinced that you know all you need to know to go through with this?

mpkoons. Get a 2nd opinion from a doctor on this site. I did. In fact I got 4 or 5 of them. I talked to different doctors all over the country but I chose Dr. Arocha for my own reasons (they were all good doctors but I had certain criteria that Dr Arocha met).

If you needed a heart transplant would you run down to the corner medical clinic or would you go see a specialist who's experience and reputation, not to mention a doctor with his own private office, is well documented and respected by all of the people on this site?

mpkoons, you just had a group of complete strangers (who have spent countless hours researching hts) take time out of their lives to try and stop you from making a mistake. we have absolutely nothing vested in doing this. it's from the goodness of our hearts. do your due diligence. and if you go ahead with mhr, best of luck, because you are going to need it.

p.s. find the patient mahair on here. he was butchered by mhr. and that's all the research i'm gonna do for you...

from a post by mahair: "I had a one time procedure by MHR 2 years ago.Went from a n/w 2.5 to a 5 and freaky looking. I am now a repair patient with neuro-vascular problems. Their resident F-up (DR. Quackdalin) told me there were no complications.Just "Great Results" You were lucky not to get butchered. MHR *is* a hair mill.I'm so glad you are not handicapped from the experience.Do some damned research and you will get some real "results". Otherwise become an MHR consultant and tell everyone thats *old work* lol."

All right, that's a little lop-sided. If M.H.R. doctors are "pocket-lining salesman," there's no reason a coalition-physician is not one. The problem with chain clinics isn't that their surgeons are somehow predisposed to being greedy little pricks intent to screw you and drive off to Miami with you 9000-graft money; it's that people choose "brand name" rather than "physician reputation," and the brand happens to have no bearing of results while the doctor's skills are indispensably important.

CuriousJungle,

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. Can you explain this statement please?

Or perhaps Swagger can since he seems to be enthusastically agreeing with it.

curious, my consultation with mhr was TOTALLY different than with any of the other clinics I went to. firstly, MHR makes you sit down with an actual salesman, not a doctor. and they pressure you heavily with various sales "techniques." the one in new york tried to get me to have surgery the following week because according to him, their top surgeon was going to be in town, but just for a few days. none of the other docs pressured me at all, and some even encouraged me to visit other clinics.

Bill allow me to answer for curious and then address my post...

curious was disagreeing with my statment about MHR being in this for the money and not the 'well being' of the patient.. i believe his argument was that just because MHR, as a whole, is not great at what they do it does not mean they are 'money hungry a** holes'.....

I, however, thru the use of my amazing intellect was able to artistically subtract the one statment he made, and use it to get my own opinion across. in the process it might appear that curious is comparing MHR with coalition doc, with regards to their true intentions.... he is NOT. this is evident if you read curious's entire post....

i can assure you that I am the bad guy hereicon_smile.gif

it is my opinion that many docs preforming this procedure today are in this for the money first.. no matter their skill level... does that mean all are?? absolutely not..

also, not sure why you say im "enthusastically" in agreement... i didnt even use CAPS or a !!! icon_wink.gif

They gave you a week to decide? Man, Bosley wouldn't let me leave and opened me up minutes after convincing a young and insecure NW2 with a high hairline to have surgery...

Bill, I think Lost My Swagger constured my point correctly (even if I don't quite agree with his agreement... icon_biggrin.gif). I mean to say that it's unfair to imply a doctor employed by M.H.R. or Bosley or any other chain is a megalomaniac intent to do shoddy work and rip people off: Nothing suggests any given coalition doctor is bound to be more "ethical" than a non-coalition physician. This Web site's recommendations, as I take it, are based on skill, not so much on morality.

As consumers, we are likely to encounter all sorts of clinics, some ethical, others not -- I feel it's unfounded to think a doctor is right-minded simply because he or she is named on this site, and, moreover, morally-bankrupt just because he or she is employed by a chain. This idea that "Bosley" is in it for the money always makes the implication that Dr. Coalition-Member is not. I believe, typically, they're all in it for the money -- as for whether or not a physician goes about trying to make it morally, it depends on him or her rather more than on by whom he or she is employed.

It is really irrelevant whether a Coalition doc or a Bosley doc is in it for the money. All i care is the doc's skill and most importantly: the result.

Similarly, i find it laughable when a patient is praising the doc because the latter was nice and caring to him.
