Senior Member ej Posted January 26, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted January 26, 2011 personally I would leave it as long as possible , alcohol thins the blood I would leave it until the crusts have fallen off week or two , perhaps a Dr could chime in with what they think ej
Senior Member Thehairupthere Posted January 26, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted January 26, 2011 Smoking and drinking alcohol does thin the blood, but you also should be taking antibiotics, perhaps with pain killers and possibly sleeping aids, so combining those medications with alcohol is dangerous. Both are obviously not recommended in the first place due to their negative effects on a person's health, but I would recommend not using any until your stitches have been removed and have stopped using the medications or about 10 days after surgery. Steven Gabel, MD, FACS
Typically, I like my patients to be off tobacco products 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks following a procedure. It is best is they quit all together as the negative overall effects of tobacco products has been well documented. In terms of alcohol, I ask my patients to refrain while they are taking the pain medication as mixing narcotics and alcohol is not recommended. If they are off their meds, and would like to have a social drink (ie - a glass of wine, or a beer), I have no problem with that once they are off their meds. If they do drink, they need to be extra careful not to disrupt the graft sites.
