Regular Member Dr. William Lindsey Posted January 18, 2011 Regular Member Share Posted January 18, 2011 Many of the regular bloggers will recognize this case. And many of you know that I am very happy to have had the opportunity to help this fellow as my daughter was in a similar predicament. This boy came in last April with a large area on his left parietal scalp with no hair several years after radiation treatments for brain cancer. We did about 700 grafts via a strip on the right side of his head. He came back in July and was growing some hair! About the middle of August we did a 1500 graft case to address the lower left parietal scalp which we hadn't dealt with in April. So he rolled in over Christmas break from his high school and at 8 and 5 months respectively, he is growing hair! His confidence is up and he's working on his driver's license. He has the same cancer doctor that my daughter has, and I'm especially proud of his results so far. There is one area, outlined in one of the lower pics, that shows no growth in an area about 1/4 by 3/4 inch. I'm not sure if that area just got too much radiation or what the issue is, but overall he is growing better than I'd ever expected. Hopefully he will be even more grown in by summer. Senior Member MusoInOz Posted January 19, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) Great work Dr L, This is a sad yet truly inspiring story. I have encountered a similar situation close to the family resulting in similar effects. It really does make you appreciate the little things in life. We all sit around anxious about our hair loss thinking the world is over yet we tend to forget we TOO could be in far worse off situations such as this poor young man was previously. Go outside and appreciate life. Bravo mate! Regular Member Dr. William Lindsey Posted May 23, 2011 Author Regular Member Share Posted May 23, 2011 We did a case over the weekend and this young man was nice enough to stop in. It was more convenient to see him on a weekend as he's still in high school. He looks great. He is 13 months out from the top, smaller case, and about 10 months out from the second case. They live a good distance away, so I'm not expecting to see them back, but I think I am as excited with the results as he and his mom are. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA William H. Regular Member Dr. William Lindsey Posted May 31, 2011 Author Regular Member Share Posted May 31, 2011 I agree. He is the "showcase" of my upcoming lecture on hair restoration at the University of Virginia in 2 weeks. I believe we have another young man with a similar history coming in for a consultation next month. Hopefully we can help him too. Its hard enough on these kids to have gone through what they did, in order to treat the cancer. The long term alopecia can be devastating in this age group. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA William H. Regular Member Dr. William Lindsey Posted June 8, 2011 Author Regular Member Share Posted June 8, 2011 You are right Ellie. As many readers know, my daughter Julia had brain cancer treated with surgery and radiation. She had 2 similar areas to this fellow, and I freely admitted to this patient, that I expected to have to do the same for Julia, which was an added motivation for me to do my best work on this patient. Fortunately, Julia's bald spots are small and are covered by hair above. Spex played basketball with my kids 3 weeks ago, and I doubt if he noticed her 2 thin hair areas. But hair loss like this in kids can be devastating. I'm so glad this fellow did well. Dr. Lindsey McLean VA William H. Senior Member Dr. Scott Alexander MD Posted June 9, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted June 9, 2011 Dr Lindsey, This is such a great result for this young man. I have a niece who has had 3 heart transplants (starting when she was 1, she is now 18) and has beat cancer (not related to her heart problems) 5 different times. She is currently finishing up chemo for her last round with cancer. Although she loses her hair each time she goes through chemo, I believe her hair has always grown back. To have to go through everything these kids go through and then be self-conscious of their appearance as a result is so sad. So glad you were able to help this young man and that he can feel good about his appearance and proud of the fact that he beat brain cancer. Hopefully there will be even more thickness to his transplant as he reaches his 1 year mark for each surgery. Again, great job and good luck to this patient in all of his future endeavors. - Please feel free to visit our website : Dr. Scott Alexander website and online consultation form Dr. Alexander is an elite member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians
