I,m seriously considering a hair transplant. After my extensive research, I'm considering a transplant by Dr. Rahal in Ottawa or Drs. Hassell and Wong in Vancouver. Rahal's price is cheaper. I live in Virginia. Do you have any thoughts on either one of these surgeons? Is one considerably better than the other? Should I consider any surgeons in the U.S.? Anyone reasonable? I wear a hair piece now from hair club. Can I continue to wear it soon after surgery? Please advice.

Hello,

I went with Dr. Feller in New York; I've heard great things about him and have been pleased so far...it has been a month.

There are several other reputable doctors in the states, as well. And Hasson and Wong are excellent.

Regarding hairpieces, that's definitely a question for a doctor, but in general, my understanding is that for the first few days, or first week for that matter, wearing anything that could in any way press on or rub the grafts is a bad idea. But I could be wrong...

Dr Ron Shapiro of Minnesota, Dr Cooley, Dr Bernstein and Dr Keene are just some of the doctors inside the US are apart of the coalition and are considered the best in the world. If you are in the U.S. already and are close to any of these doctors mentioned above I believe there is no real reason to travel to Vancouver unless you require a megasession.

My personal belief is that Dr Ron Shapiro is considered to be the best in the world for hairlines and H&W are considered the best in the world for performing megasessions. Having said that 3-4000+ grafts are routinely performed by most leading doctors and it would be almost impossible to tell the HT results from the doctors in the coalition apart, as they all are capable of producing excellent results.

My personal opinion is to have consultations with the doctors in the coalition that are closest to you and go with the one that you are most comfortable with.

Hi

Dr. True did my 2 HT's with great results. He also has a great reputation for hairlines and I can tell you mine looks pretty damn good 7 months into my 2nd HT.. I would do some resarch and meet a couple of the docs

Good luck

1476 FUT - Dr. True

2124 FUT - Dr. True

My views are based on my personal experiences, research and objective observations. I am not a doctor.

While having a reputation for being straightforward, extremely ethical, and very reluctant to operate on younger men suffering from hair loss, I wouldn't say that Dr. Bernstein is known for his hairline work. Nor does he pack at densities greater than 25FU/cm2 on a single pass. His approach to hairlines looks more standardized than either Shapiro's or True's, and his suggested placements are probably too high for certain people's tastes. I think he's an older man's doctor and no longer considered to be on the vanguard, either technically or aesthetically ....

Being the clinic manager for Ron Shapiro, I would highly recommend his clinic in Minnesota. Dr. Shapiro's prices are comparable to Hasson and Wong, but you won't have to travel to Canada. Dr. Shapiro would recommend you not wearing a hair piece for a week. If you absolutely had to wear one before that time, you do have to be careful not to have it rub on the newly transplanted grafts and wear it just during the day at work.

L'Anonyme,

What makes you say Dr Bernstein is not on the vanguard technically. Please defend your argument. Hairline I guess is a personal choice

some will like it some might not.....but what makes you say texhnically he is not on the vanguard.

I meant in terms of his ability or willingness to dense pack above 25 FU/cm2 at a single pass. I think many posters on this forum are interested in surgeons who can provide denser results with fewer surgeries, hence the strong presence of Hasson/Wong patients here. I'm sure Bernstein's approach is well reasoned and articulated on his web site so check it out. Minimization of shock loss is undoubtedly a key factor. But if you have large bald areas that need transplanting, why wouldn't you go with someone who could offer you more coverage and more grafts in fewer procedures? If I needed a full head session, I don't think I'd go to Bernstein....

hey L'Anonyme,

I would highly recommend that you take a look at Dr.Paul Rose. He is highly respected and affordable. You could get in touch with him on his cell phone and once you talk to him, you will be convinced. He has an excellent staff as well.

Berstein is a fine doctor, and is known as a repair specialist. However, he does not do large sessions, and I personally think he is suited to older patients as his hairlines are more mature. I have nothing against doctors that only do sessions of 1500 grafts, BUT, in this day and age, why should someone shell out full price and endure three of four surgeries, when it is more cost effective and time responsible to do 2 large sessions? IMO UNLESS you possess terrible donor and the tightest scalp imaginable, are 40+ years old with slight balding, then you should OPTIMIZE your surgeries. Using this stratagem, Bernstein would not rank at the top of my list as a younger man. Please note, I do struggle with docs that refuse to at LEAST do 2500 grafts a session, as they seem a bit reluctant to enter this new era of hairtransplantation. I think that is what L'A is referring to in his description of Dr. Bernstein (dense pack/larger graft counts).

BTW Haircover, I will say that Dr. Rahal is doing some damn fine work, and his pricing is VERY reasonable. I still maintain that given the CHOICE Dr. Shapiro or H&W should be at the top of your list FIRST. Either of these docs will give you the finest HT on the planet. However, Dr. Rahal is REALLY impressive, as is Dr. Seager who is in the same area as Rahal. Anyway, I hope this helps you out and feel free to ask anyone anything!!!!
