Aight I am 20 yars old. I will probably have ht this summer. I will probably have it done in michigan at MHR. I was wondering how much work i will need on both side. ABout what it will cost. I have also read that u cant lift weight for like 3 months. I play college football and i cant go that long without lifting weights so I hope this is not true. I just wanted to know what u guys think, but dont try and talk me out of it. Your wasting your time. If you think it is hard to me 30 and loseing your hair try being 18.

JO20,

Many college and pro athletes have HT, they do it the first week of offseason when they normally take 4 weeks off anyway. You can start running or your conditioning workouts within 10 days after HT and start very light weights (about 50% for 15-20 reps) to get the blood back into your muscles at around 3-4 weeks then slowly build up from there. WHen you go heavier as football players do during their training cycle, there is a risk of stretching the donor scar, just dont strain with your neck or head or grit your teeth and focus on the the stress of the muscle your working -- this should be fine.

Also, look at taking supplements right during, and after your HT to help maintain your strength while your off for 4 weeks. Supplements like NO2, nitric oxide-- this also helps get blood to the extreme capulies to help speed up the healing of the grafts-- I took this and think it help even though it is for muscle growth, the mechanism of action logically would work for getting blood to extreme areas like the scalp for healing. Also, stack it with Creatine (some product combine both NO2 and Creatine-- like V-12), This will allow you to maintain your muscle size and strength during those 4 weeks of healing.

One suggestion, if you could possibly wait until your college career is over, it might be better because of the trauma your scalp goes through in surgery and the trauma your head goes through taking hits every play in football. Maybe the spring after your Sr season might be the best time.

Great advise Smoothy! Man, you're all over most of these subjects. I was thinking the same thing about waiting until after his Sr year, you and I know what one's head goes thru. I lift weights and appreciate your advise on the supplements. Thanks!

NO2 is great stuff. I have used it for a couple of years off and on and I like it better than any other supplement that I have taken. I use the BSN Nitrix stacked with BSN NO-Explod (which is a powder that also contains creatine).

JO20, I noticed that you are in Michigan. While I won't attempt to talk you out of a hair restoration procedure, I would like to take the time to recommend some relatively nearby independent physicians to you.

In Ohio, there is Dr. Robert Haber, in Illinois there is Dr. Raymond Konoir, and in Minnesota there is Dr. Ron Shapiro.

All of these physicians utilize the latest techniques in dense-packed follicular unit graft placement, all are highly reverred in the field of hair transplantation, and all have patient photos on the links provided above.

I am not trying to swerve you either way. It is obvious that you made your decision and wish to stick with it. I am only asking that you conduct some thorough research and not rush into anything that you may regret later.

You only get one scalp and a very finite amount of donor area hair. You want to treat both like gold.

If I can help further, let me know. By the way, I know what it is like to be losing hair at 18. Even at 17. I was a NW4+ by the time I reached 24. Its not a fun trip and no amount of consolation helps while looking in the mirror and seeing less of a hairline as each day passes. Luckily, however, you are aware of it and taking action sooner rather than later. You didn't mention whether you have been utilizing any medication for your hair loss or not. It is a good idea to at least look into finasteride and minoxidil to stabilize the loss before getting the transplant.

MHR is a "hairmill".. They do multiple procedures at one time. They are also known for bringing new doctors in the field of hair restoration, along with poorly trained staff.

They are known to be second class in hair restoration techniques, and are not upto date on modern techniques.

They are money driven, flashed with fancy, misinforming advertising commercials.

They can be far more expensive than many top doc's in this field, who and train, only top notch procedures...

Sounds like you have much research to do.

Take Robert's suggestion wisely, and look outside of commercialism...

Good Luck!

Jo - I'm 25. Three years ago I was all but ready to jump in an MHR chair and get going. Thank God I came here first...I've done a ton of research and decided to take propecia and xandrox (most recently xandrox 15). I'm pretty happy so far.

So take it from a guy that's not that much older than you...Don't be an F*cken idiot! Keep doing your homework. In just a few weeks of posting you've already decided to choose a great doctor! I'm pleased to read that. I've seen nightmarish results from MHR...I mean nightmares...

How severe is your hairloss? You should realize that if your hairloss isn't far enough along, Shapiro may turn you away and tell you to go on a propecia/minox regime. Getting an HT too soon could be a very bad move. Again, research some threads... You're not the first 20 year old to post his frustrations on this site.

I don't want to discourage you, but you should realize that any good doctor will not operate if it's not the right time. Also, be prepared either way to end up taking propecia...with or without an HT.

Best of luck and keep us posted

Andy

Hi there... I just got my second hair transplant

three days ago( I am 35). If you have been losing your hair only couple years I recomend

Rogaine or Propecia... You can buy cheap Propecia 1mg thru XLPharmacy.com where 3 month supply generic version cost only $64 or you can buy Proscar 5mg (5mg/4= 1.25mg per dosage)and devided in four pieces and 3 month supply last hole year only for $120 it end up to be only

$10 invest per month. Also little advice for

rogaine use... If you use 2% or 5% solution and it greates itching scalp I recomend buying

follogen solution therapy spray to prevent this itching problem. (just apply folligen solution couple minutes after applying rogaine and it take care of itching)

Folligen cream has also helped atleast for me to keep my hair line and I start to see some fuss hair emerging from my forehead. Good luck what ever you decide to do !!!

JO - search Justin_Sievers on this site...he's a young guy who had a great HT by Dr. Paul Rose of the Shapiro Medical Group. Compare your head with his pre-op photos. It may give you an idea of how far along you should be before a reputable doc will cut into your donor area.

Regardless, go see Shapiro and get his opinion. I think that's the only thing that will quell your frustrations. Best of luck and keep us posted.

JO20,

I'm 21 and I just got a HT little over a month ago. I got 580 grafts on my hairline to make it look a little better. I felt the same way, tried rogaine since I was 18, then finnaly decided that if I plan on getting and HT in the future why wait, so I got it done and I am now on Proscar to help prevent any further loss, plus I have a great deal of donor hair left for future procedures. I waited about a week an a half till I started liftin again, good luck with it

I started balding early. At about 18 my temples started to recede very fast. I was depressed but still had a lot of hair on top and I had a lot of options for covering it up.

At that point, foolishly, I started thinking about hair transplants. Thankfully I did some research and realized that it might be a bad move to get work done on my temples when I had no idea exactly just how bald I'd end up.

Well I'm glad I waited because at around age 22 or 23 the front and crown started to thin. By age 28 it had thinned to the point where I looked almost completely bald up top. Now, at 30 years old, I'm a Norwood 5/6 and I'm still wondering how much more I'm going to lose.

And, unfortunately, I found that looking at relatives was no good indication. My father, grandfather, and uncles on both sides of the family did bald to some degree but they didn't start balding as early as I did, and even today I am more bald than all of them.

Had I gotten hair transplants back when I was 20 I would look pretty ridiculous today. Nowadays I'm not even concerned about my temples. Hell I'd be happy with the little "island" strip of hair up front. When I read and see some of the posts on this message board from some of you really young guys it makes me wince. I really hope for your sakes that everything works out well for you.

Something to think about.
