  1. Gambler: Thank you for refocusing on the topic. We appreciate your compliment. This patient is exceedingly pleased with his results. XZ: Good to have reasonable minds in the discussion
  2. Mr Tillman, As usual thank you for your opinion. In addition to the links, articles (including our peer reviewed medical publications) and information we provided in earlier posts, I think contacting Dr. Umar on any areas you still need clarification on would be very helpful for your knowledge and understanding. Now lets refocus the thread back to its primary purpose, the case presentation:

  4. Mr Tillman, All wounds heal by forming scars which can be either raised above surrounding skin; flushed with the rest of the skin; or depressed below skin level. Factors like wound size, wound configuration, physiology, interceding conditions like infection etc can influence which of the 3 scenarios dominate. These are basic wound healing principles. FUE wounds are not magical in any sense and must follow these same principles. Back in 2005, Dr Umar wrote this article that partly touches on the subject:https://www.dermhairclinic.com/wp-content/uploads/Wound-Sizes-Configuration-And-Body-Hair-Transplant-Wound-Healing.pdf In designing the UGraft Punch, Dr U. took into account these factors. While advantages have resulted, there is no claiming that FUE wounds somehow transcend basic wound healing principles. Regardless, most would agree that donor areas would typically look better after FUE (not mattering the tool used) than after FUSS. Pardon me for not seeing a productive aim to this topic. I thank you for your question. But I would like to restrict further involvement to the original premise of this thread, namely; the reported case whose wound healing remains pristine (as evidenced by beard healing after removal of several thousands of grafts). Again feel free to email Dr. U directly at drumar@dru.com should you still need more information.

  6. A nod to Thatoldchestnut. Very clever comment and philosophical observation on your part Mr Tillman, with all due respect, apart from red herrings popping up on this thread there are no issues to address. The is self explanatory and straight forward enough. Dr. Umar's Work in Body Hair Transplantation - Publications in Peer Reviewed Medical Journals Here is a link where you can access our peer reviewed medical publications on our work in body hair transplantation featured in journals like: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, JAMA Dermatology (formerly the Archives of Dermatology), JAAD (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology), Facial Plastic Surgery and Annals of Plastic Surgery. Click here to access articles Patient is Happy Also, If this was not made clear earlier, I’d like to emphasize that the patient himself is very pleased with his results and with our efforts to meet his objectives. We naturally realize that everyone will have different tastes and opinions, not only on this matter but throughout just about all facets of life. if you listen to his own voice in the video you would find a gentleman who is thrilled with his outcome and transformation. Body Hair Transplant - Hair Texture As for the feedback on the patient’s hair texture, keep in mind that his results shown here are only at seven months. Some individuals may choose professional straightening with chemicals. But this is not recommended for the newly situated grafts as of now. As stated earlier, the final appearance of the body hair grafts will vary depending on genetics and styling choices. Here are additional patient examples which help illustrate this. And like the main patient featured in this thread, these are yet other individuals (among many others)who are also extremely delighted with their results and have expressed this sentiment through verbal testimonials in their own words featured in the videos.
  7. Wound healing is not physics Mr Tillman...its biology the scope of which is outside the scope of this forum. But Dr U has published his work on this in several peer reviewed scientific journals, which you are welcome to read. Contact Dr U directly drumar@dru.com if you need any part of his publications simplified for your understanding. But we thank you and Hairweare for your opinions.
  8. Hereweare, if you are referring to this video; http://www.dermhairclinic.com/body-hair-transplantation-7300-grafts/ We were very pleased to have this patient come to the clinic for hair transplant surgery. He was presented with all of the options, discussed them with Dr U, and made a decision as to what was right for him. He is very pleased with the outcome of his surgeries and was kind enough to discuss his experience in a home video he made himself, in his own words. We are grateful for his doing this and feel honored to be part of his hair recovery journey. from over the years speak to its efficacy: Mr Tillman: hahaha
  9. Hairweare, I am glad you have the mute button. We find the music to be light hearted fun. Too bad you do not see the humor in it. You stated: The claim that body hair is "thicker" and therefore provides better coverage and requires less grafts than scalp hair is suspect. Can you show me where this statement was made by Dr Umar or our clinic? If there is, I am sure it is a mistake. But I cannot fathom where this mistake would have occurred as it is contrary to myriad of statements made by us on this subject. SO "hairweare" where did you find such a statement?
  10. Re: Graft Extractions on the Face, Visible Scarring and Donor Hair From Back of the Head Hello zyzz, UGraft is configured to create uniquely shaped wound cavities which are inverted at the bottom. This reduces the extraneous tissue on the skin's surface which would otherwise contribute to raised scarring. The edges of the wound are then able to close in a way that renders minimal scar tissue that would typically be negligible to the human eye. Here is an article which also has an animated video which helps to grasp a better visual idea of how this works. uGraft | Follicular Unit Extraction | Body Hair Transplant And yes, UGraft can also be used to extract donor hair from the back of the head.
  11. Most patients after several years of poor hair condition have forgotten how best to take care of their hair and do not visit hair salons having been shying away from them for years. We find this to be more the case with patient who have had severe hair loss conditions for a long time. After radical hair restoration, it takes a while to make the psychological leap back to these routines. The first priority is often "i want hair". The next step is now that I have the hair what is the best look for me. We usually encourage a first visit to a hair care professional who can help determine an ideal hair length and hair grooming practices including styling and hair care products to help improve the look and feel of the hair texture. This patient has been so advised and we expect that in his video update, the he would have adopted a hair grooming routine that takes optimal advantage of his global coverage. The appearance of beard hair on the head will differ from person to person, depending on both genetics and styling practices. Here is another example of a patient from our clinic who underwent a large volume hair transplant repair (7300 grafts) using beard hair combined with head hair. Body Hair to Head Transplantation Results - 7300 Grafts. He was quite thrilled with his results which finally put an end to the many visible errors left by previous surgeries. In his video testimony, he notes that his final head of hair is closely similar to what he had in college. So when he attended his class reunion after his surgery, it would seem to his old friends that he had only grown older, but maintained a rather youthful head of hair, what they had seen of him back in the 1960s. 13. This patient initially chose strip surgery to address hair loss resulting from androgenic alopecia. However, the failure of his first surgery to produce the expected growth results caused a chain of additional repair procedures. These subsequent surgeries were also performed using the strip technique. Like many individuals needing successful repair, this gentleman faced the Catch 22 of not having enough donor follicles left on his scalp to achieve significant improvement. Therefore, his situation grew more hopeless after each of these operations. New Hope With Body Hair Follicles The patient learned about Dr. Umar’s work in hair transplant repair, including individuals who had been able to achieve full coverage, even under worse conditions. These results were made possible through the ability to remove body hair follicles as additional donor resources. Due to strong need for larger donor supplies among patients with severe hair loss and repair situations, Dr. Umar worked to design a new form of FUE punch technology known as UGraft. It includes special mechanics and features which safely remove follicles growing at sharp angles or producing hair emerging at unpredictable growth trajectories. This specialized engineering enabled large volumes of body hair to be removed so that they can then serve as viable hair transplant grafts. This patient wanted to restore normal coverage and be able to move on with his life. Therefore, he decided to undergo yet another surgery, only this time using a combined donor pool of head and beard hair. To achieve this patient’s goals, Dr. Umar removed 11,000 grafts. 9500 were inserted to cover the areas of depleted hair on the head 1500 were applied to conceal the strip scarring Besides the safe harvesting of body hair, UGraft also creates wound cavities with a special shape. When the skin heals, extraneous tissue around the edges of the wounds are drawn beneath the skin’s surface. This minimizes the appearance of noticeable raised scars. Furthermore, Dr. Umar made sure to remove beard hair follicles by selecting them diffusely across the chin and neck. Growth of stubble or a fuller beard would therefore not reveal large patches of missing hair. Despite the extent of his hair loss, the patient was able to recover an aggressive hairline along with natural looking temples to complement the final hair contour around the face. This was due to the additional grafts made possible in the donor pool through the extraction of beard hair. These results are shown at just seven months. Additional improvements are expected in the months ahead. To learn more about this patient's experience and to watch his video click here
  14. Dr. Umar’s patient underwent a hair transplant surgery using body and head hair with 4500 grafts He wanted to repair an undesired outcome from a previous strip procedure (performed at another clinic) to correct a Norwood 6 level hair loss. However, his results left him struggling with continued sparseness, pluggy growth and a noticeable linear scar. After his first hair transplant, he continued to have some donor hair remaining on his scalp. However, this quantity was not enough to create the youthful looking coverage that he ideally desired. Therefore, he sought the help of Dr. Umar to include beard hair grafts as extra resources to achieve his vision. Donor Pool of 4500 Grafts Using UGraft, an Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction technology, Dr. Umar removed a combined donor supply consisting of head and beard hair, producing a total donor supply of 4500 grafts. In developing his UGraft instrumentation, Dr. Umar worked with a team of engineers to design a special FUE punch that could safely extract sharply angled hair follicles such as those in the body and beard donor regions. This includes a curved cutting axis directed away from the follicle, a gentle pulling mechanic and a water transport system that gently takes the graft to a proper holding receptacle. Furthermore, UGraft creates higher wound healing standards due to the shape of the excision cavity which is created. Any scarring that occurs is visually and cosmetically negligible. This is of particular importance on the face and other open areas. Patient’s Final Transformation Due to the long distance of his residence from the clinic, the patient was not able to come into our office to have pictures and video taken. He created his own video footage (at 9 months) of his results and sent it to us. Click here Images of his outcome show a much more youthful coverage and a flattering hairline/temple frame around his face which replaces the pluggy growth from before. Also greatly improved growth and density are shown in the top, crown and frontal scalp.
  15. This patient's hair loss was initially a Norwood 6 and wanted to achieve a full head of hair. Prior to his body hair transplant surgery by Dr. Umar, he underwent a strip procedure which left him with a large linear scar. Therefore, in addition to achieving the coverage that he wanted he also wanted to have this camouflaged. In order to meet his goals, 4500 grafts were needed. Many of these follicles were extracted from the beard and nape. However, head and nape hair were also incorporated into the donor supply to create a more even looking coverage and a natural looking hairline edge. Here is a breakdown of the grafts used: Day 1: 1498 grafts of head and beard hair were applied to the crown Day 2: 1601 grafts of head and beard hair were inserted into the crown Day 3: 1385 grafts of head, beard and nape hair were inserted into the frontal and mid scalp hairline The photos below show the patient's results at nine months:
  16. This patient was considered to be at a Norwood level 3-4 due to hair loss at the hairline and temples. He wanted to achieve an extremely natural looking restoration which would be appropriate for his age. Therefore he chose a conservative and mature looking result. Using Follicular Unit Extraction, Dr. Umar removed 1200 grafts from the scalp and nape. These were carefully inserted to create an extremely natural looking result. Since nape hair is thinner, these grafts were used along the edges of the hairline and temples to replicate the soft, featured edge these contours. The patient commented that his own barber was astonished to learn that he had undergone a hair restoration procedure since there was no linear scar. Also other people were not able to tell that he had undergone surgery until he decided to tell them. Here are before and after photos of his procedure. To watch the patient's video and learn more about this case, click here
  17. This patient had initially undergone a strip surgery procedure. However, his results were quite disappointing. His crown remained bald. Some growth had manifested on the hairline and frontal scalp which created an awkward island of hair. In his interview, he said, “ I previously had more of a wall of hair and that was not very satisfactory as my hair started to recede.” Click here to watch his video from the first procedure. During his initial surgery, the patient received 2600 grafts of head and nape hair. These were inserted to improve his coverage and create a more normal looking appearance. 300 grafts of beard hair were applied to camouflage the strip scar. The patient was quite happy with his improvement. In his video, remarking, “ Being able to use Dr. Umar’s procedure really enabled me to have a very natural head of hair.” This year, the patient decided to improve upon his 2010 results with an additional 1300 body hair grafts. These were added to improve upon the existing level of density. Here are photos of his results, shown six months following surgery.
  18. Here are some additional photos of the same patient above which show: (1) the full extent of scarring (as seen on the shaved areas on the back of the head right before surgery (2) the markings that designate the new hairline and temple points (these also illustrate the extent of recession in both contours) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xX8rrNSInw&feature=youtu.be
  19. Here is a patient’s 18 month update of a body hair transplant procedure performed by Dr. Umar. This individual had initially undergone past attempts to restore his hair. These included: (1) strip surgery (2) scalp reductions (3) However, the result of these surgeries included poor growth, highly noticeable strip scars, crown deformity and an elevated neck hairline. The patient essentially wanted to conceal these mistakes and achieve improved coverage for the hairline, temples and crown. He continued to have somewhat of an ample supply of donor follicles remaining on his head. However, this was still insufficient to meet the repair and coverage objectives for his latest operation. Dr. Umar compiled a donor pool of 7286 grafts: (1) 4458 grafts from the scalp (2) 2654 grafts from the beard area (3) 174 grafts from the nape The patient requested a mature, age-appropriate hairline along with temple points designed to suit this contour. Dr. Umar was able to create the desired coverage and aesthetic details. Due to the severity of the scarring, a substantial portion of the donor follicles were used to conceal these areas. The growth angle of beard hair tends to be sharper than head hair. And because of this, graft damage is a significant risk with the basic cylindrical design of standard Follicular Unit Extraction punches. Dr. Umar therefore designed his UGraft technology to enable the safe removal of different types of hair throughout the body. Using this approach, patients are able to achieve more ideal forms of coverage despite having limited head donor supplies. The before photos shown here were taken by the patient himself. He wanted to clearly show the issues he sought to correct by photographing his hair while it was wet so that the scalp would be quite visible. The images of his results at eighteen months were taken by our office. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xX8rrNSInw If the player is not displaying above, here is a link to his before and after video. 20. A conservative 1600 head hair grafts were used to create an amazing improvement in this patient’s overall appearance. The patient chose Dr. Umar for this procedure to repair the results of his first hair transplant which was done using the strip method. However, the outcome of this initial procedure was disappointing. Not only did most of the grafts fail to grow, but also he felt constrained by the presence of his scar which required longer hair lengths to keep it hidden. Extraction of Head Donor Grafts For this procedure, the patient wanted to target two objectives: add density to his thinning top cover his strip scar These goals required 1600 total grafts. 1200 were needed for the top region around his hairline. And the remaining 400 were allocated for the strip scar. Dr. Umar removed these grafts using Follicular Unit Extraction Although the patient had already undergone a previous hair transplant surgery, he still had enough follicular units on his scalp to meet these requirements. Therefore it was not necessary to harvest donor hair from other body regions. Patient’s Photos of His Final Outcome The images shown here reflect the patient’s appearance before and after his surgery. His improvements are not only attributed to successful growth yield, but also Dr. Umar’s careful and strategic insertions to recreate natural patterns and density on the head. This surgery was able to achieve a more youthful looking frame around the patient’s face and cover the scar so that he could finally wear shorter styles with greater confidence. Although his crown continues to remain empty, this region may be addressed in future procedures when the patient is ready to focus on this area. As another note, due to the patient’s distance residence from the clinic, he was only able to take photos of his final results himself as opposed to having images taken by our office. 21. The patient in these photos initially chose to undergo a strip surgery. After this hair transplant, he was naturally left with a linear scar. Also, he was not happy with the unnatural looking hairline which resulted from this procedure. Not only was this placed too high, but also the hairs used were quite thick in appearance. This is quite apparent from the photos below. The strip surgery excision can only be safely performed on the back and sides of the head. However, hair tends to be very thick in these regions. And using them for the hairline will produce very harsh looking results which are seen here. Dr. Umar was able to create a more natural looking outcome with a fuller level of coverage. Due to the patient’s prior surgery, he did not have enough donor grafts left on his scalp. Therefore, Dr. Umar removed 300 follicular units from the beard regions, in addition to the head. And 1500 grafts were taken from the head and nape areas. Dr. Umar developed highly specialized Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction technology called uGraft to successfully remove different types of hair follicles from both the head and body. The punch creates a cutting axis that is angled away from the individual graft structures. And a gentle pulling feature safely removes them from the surrounding tissue. Furthermore, the uGraft punches create inverted shaped wounds. When they close, less extraneous tissue is left on the surface. Therefore the appearance of visual scars is quite negligible. And patients like this would not have to worry about unsightly markings left on their face and/or neck. With the graft quantity that was harvested, Dr. Umar was able to cover the strip scar and create an abundant level of coverage for the patient. He also created an extremely natural looking and detailed hairline which produced a very positive effect for the patient’s overall appearance. Read more
  22. Like many women, the patient in this video wanted longer eyelashes. But she was dissatisfied with the currently available options for achieving this. By undergoing surgery, it is possible to actually achieve one’s very own set of long eyelash hairs. Eyelash hair transplant procedures are normally done with grafts taken from the main areas of the scalp. However, Dr. U recommends the use of thinner hair which more closely resembles real eyelashes. For this patient he extracted follicles from the nape and carefully inserted them in the upper lash line. Dr. Umar has developed an Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction punch technology called uGraft. It is able to remove a wide range of different types of hair follicles, not just from the head, but also from the body and nape. The punch units create a cutting axis that angles away from the tiny structures and doesn’t extend quite as deep as a regular straight cylindrical punch. The incisions are aided by the action of a gentle pulling feature which helps to safely remove each follicle. Furthermore, patients don’t have to feel concerned about being left with visibly noticeable scars following their extractions. UGraft creates inverted wound cavities. This enables less extraneous tissue around the edges of the wound to remain on the skin’s surface after closing. This patient was extremely happy with the results of her procedure and recommends the surgery to anyone who is also interested in achieving longer lashes, without the ongoing maintenance and expense of other methods. She explains, “It’s your hair. You control it.” Excellent growth results became manifest around the three month point. And further improvements were evident by about six months following her surgery. As far as maintenance, the patient trims her lashes about once a week. Nape hair follicles will continue to grow as before, even in the eyelash area. Some patients choose to have their lashes professionally permed about once a month to achieve an upward curl that helps to enhance the eyes. Here is the patient's video: Click here, if player is not displaying-
  23. This patient wanted naturally longer eyelashes but does not have the genetics to makes this possible. She felt that surgery would be a better option to medication, extensions and false lashes. Use of Leg Hair For Eyelash Transplant Grafts Dr. Umar’s decision to choose leg hair for grafts was based on the following characteristics: (1) Leg hair tends to remain short instead of growing longer beyond the length of average eyelash hair. Trimming is less of a necessity in most cases (2) Leg hair does not shed right after a transplant. Therefore, patients can continue to enjoy their results immediately after surgery without having to wait 3-4 months for a new growth cycle. (3) Leg hair is very close in thickness to real eyelash hair. Dr. Umar used his Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction uGraft technology to remove the leg hair follicles. It’s features allow for the safe removal of follicles. And it creates wound cavity shapes for the highest healing standards which is particularly important for body surfaces. To minimize the risk of damage due to sharp or unpredictable growth angles, the cutting axis is curved away from the follicle. A gentle pulling mechanism aids in the removal of the final graft. Furthermore, the punches create wound cavities that are inverted at the very bottom. This minimizes extraneous tissue and achieves much higher healing standards in terms of appearance. Any scar tissue is virtually negligible to the human eye. Eyelash Restoration Results The final results of the patient’s eyelash transplant surgery are shown in the photos below. 30 grafts were applied to each eye. In her video (see link below), she remarked that people were noticing and complimenting her results about 1 month following her procedure. She is very happy with her permanent new eyelashes and recommends to anyone who is considering the procedure to “just do it.” To watch this patients video, click here
  24. The patient shown in the photos below had made several attempts to restore his hair. He had experienced both scalp reduction procedures and strip surgery. However, his overall growth was quite disappointing. He was also left with scars, a disfigured crown and an elevated hairline. On top of all this, most of his head donor supply had been depleted. Therefore, through conventional hair transplant surgery, achieving the patient’s vision of ideal coverage would be considered unrealistic. However, Dr. Umar’s specialization in body hair to head transplantation offered new hope and possibilities. The process of extracting grafts from outside the head involves slightly different considerations compared to scalp hair. (1) Follicles from the body grow at much sharper angles. This presents a challenge when trying to position FUE punches around each graft as accurately as possible. Therefore, there is a much higher risk of damaging these structures. (2) Wound healing is expected to have much higher standards on the body, compared to the head which is covered in hair. Dr. Umar developed his uGraft technology to address these challenges. This Advanced Follicular Unit Extraction system has features which safely remove large quantities of body hair follicles and enable them to serve as viable grafts. New Coverage and Hairline Inspired by Bono – Achieved Through Body Hair Transplant Dr. Umar removed grafts from the head, nape and beard area to achieve the required donor supply of 6200 grafts. These were inserted into the targeted areas to: (1) recreate natural patterns of growth (2) cover the scarring and errors from past procedures (3) create a new hairline and temple points to improve the framing around the face. The patient felt inspired by the mature hairline of U2’s singer, Bono. He felt this would look appropriate for his appearance. Dr. Umar studied the characteristics of this hairline and adapted it to suit the facial characteristics of this particular patient. Here are before and after photos. The patients video can be accessed here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQzgXsDjQGk&feature=share&list=UUo8MYXIn54T5q-5XuzdLTNA
  25. This patient initially thought that Scalp Micropigmentation would be a good solution for his hairline and temple recession. However, the reality of using pigment to simulate hair turned out to be very different from what he expected. It was very easy for anyone to see the textural difference between his real hair and the pigmented regions on his scalp. And obviously, this did not look natural. Dr. Umar was able to remove 750 grafts from the patient’s own scalp. These were inserted to restore hair in the temples and hairline area to give him a more youthful looking frame around his face. And of course, this also served to conceal the ink on the patient’s scalp. FUE on Patients of African Descent Individuals of African descent face the risk of higher transection rate in an FUE hair transplant. This is due to the shape of their follicles and the curved growth trajectory of their hair. Such factors make it challenging for a straight FUE punch to be used in excising individual grafts without severing the follicles. Another variable that needs to be considered with these patients in the tissue which surrounds the hair structures. This can be firmer and more difficult to penetrate using conventional punch tools. UGraft has been designed with features to help remove follicles that are considered to be atypical compared to straight hair structures which grow on the scalp. This includes the curved follicles in patients of African origin as well as body hair. One of these features is the angled cutting axis, as illustrated here. It is recommended that a test procedure is performed prior to an official surgery. This is done to determine an approximate transection rate as well as other potential difficulties which may arise during a surgery. This patient was able to undergo a full Follicular Unit Extraction procedure. His results are shown in these photos. More information is available on his video
