turnoutthelights
Hi all, amazing forum you've got here, tons of info and real supportive community. Amazing to see. Anyway, I'm only just now accepting that I have got to do something about my hair loss. I'm 36 and up until about 2 years ago, I didn't think it was that bad and then suddenly it accelerated. For reference, my dad went totally bald at 25. I'm guessing I'm somewhere between NW5 and 6. I know everyone will tell me to get on finasteride but I'm scared to death to try it. Regarding an HT, how many FUE grafts do you think would be necessary to give me an acceptable look? I think my donor area is good but what do I know. Thanks for all the help and I will be sure to do my research thoroughly.
Regular Member ScottishGuy21 Posted November 24, 2023 Regular Member Share Posted November 24, 2023 Whilst your hairloss is still progressing it’s not wise to have a transplant. That being said you are probably nearing your final pattern now. You’ll need a minimum of 6000 -7000 grafts if your donor is strong enough . Unless you went to a small handful of giga session specialists it’s probably wise to split that over 2 surgeries. One focusing on the frontal third to shape your face and the other on midscalp and crown . But be prepared for a long and expensive process and please do your research. You’ll get one shot at this given your losses. Choosing the right surgeon is crucial

Senior Member HappyMan2021 Posted November 25, 2023 Senior Member Share Posted November 25, 2023 I would not proceed with a HT to be honest. -You have really advanced hairloss and wager you'd need 3 (or more surgeries) to return to NW1 status -Keep in mind that for many people wore than NW3, returning to NW1 may honestly be impossible. You may be limited by donor and/or your HT's may be mediocre or worse results. Heck, its really challenging for some NW2 and NW3s to return to NW1 So your end result may be going from a high # NW to a NW3 or NW2. If you are seeking NW1 and only NW1, do not press go -It's really really REALLY ill-advised to get a HT without being on a dht blocking med like Fin. Without meds it defeats the purpose of getting a HT.... In your current un-medicated state, if you seriously can't live life as a bald or balding man, I would honestly explore a hair system/wig before surgery Surgery requires 1) Honest and realistic expectations for what can be achieved and 2) Medication to prevent future hairloss
Valued Contributor Gatsby Posted November 25, 2023 Valued Contributor Share Posted November 25, 2023 I would definitely start on medication as surgery is really a last resort. You can always cease the medication. GATSBY 'UNPLUGGED!' 15,671 (3 surgeries) Grafts FUE+BHT Dr. Sethi Eugenix

Senior Member Hairwolf Posted November 25, 2023 Senior Member Share Posted November 25, 2023 To echo the OPs here, meds is your first port of call. You need to stabilize the hair loss before even thinking about a HT. I would not hesitate if I was you.
Senior Member Doron Harati Posted November 25, 2023 Senior Member Share Posted November 25, 2023 @turnoutthelights you're a good candidate, although you're NW5-6, the donor is healthy and strong enough to give full coverage in 2 sessions without overharvesting it, scalp structure is narrow which save a lot of grafts, lateral humps are strong and healthy which will significantly support the transplanted hair coverage, and you still have some native hair that can support some. If you afraid of Finasteride, I suggest you'll consider to try to topical formula which is less "aggressive", I had side effects from the oral Finasteride, but now I'm using topical with Minoxidil for over 2 years without any side effects, this can assist to the exist remain native hairs. To cover everything you'll need around 6000-7000+- grafts, at HDC clinic we specializes with NW6 cases and giga sessions for the right candidates, I think your case it will be safer to have 4000 grafts for 1st session for your frontal and middle scalp without overharvesting your donor, the potential need to be checked with a detailed review. Regular Member baddecisions Posted November 25, 2023 Regular Member Share Posted November 25, 2023 Finasteride/Dutasteride and oral minoxidil is the only way to go, you're starting your treatment late. Don't have a surgery without having stabilized alopecia, since you could lose even more hair, believe it or not.

I read a lot of good things about Xyon topical dutasteride, but they sent me an email they're not shipping to Europe. So I'm really curious where you get your topical finasteride
