Failed FUT surgery, any advise?

Recommended Posts

I had 2900 FUT surgery early this year.

My previous FUT scar was only 1mm wide, but this time the scar has stretched somewhere between 4-7mm.

During the surgery the doctor made all the incisions at the sides and all those grew by month 5.

But he then had his tech perform the rest of the incisions on top without telling me and I still don’t have any growth. Im now at month 9

This was before surgery

THis is now

I tried finding out about the tech who operated on me, and the clinic initially answered some of my questions they politely told me to stop when I wanted to know specifics about her experience.

The surgeon has already offered to fix the FUT scar and will replace any grafts that don’t grow, but I have to wait til 12 months. Other clinics I’ve consulted do not believe I have enough grafts to cover the lost areas. I’ve already had 8500 grafts transplanted.

I am incredibly upset and no longer have confidence in the surgeon despite their status in the industry. What do I do next?

I wouldn’t be going back to the same Dr/Clinic, you can’t afford for the FUT to potentially get even more stretched, no guarantee they will do any better.
Scar revision is difficult even in the elite Drs hands, the more skin excised the more risk of stretching. By all means consult with some Drs that are excelling in this area. Which begs the question, who was this done by?

I'm not sure on fut scars after surgery #2... but I will vouch for Dr Gabel in Oregon in for creating nearly undetectable scars and also very good transplant work. Others probably know better than me about this after a couple HTs but I'd think his technique and proficiency with it might be able help sort that.

I’d rather not say who the surgeon is as I still have to deal with them. The clinic is considered elite and are responsible for lots of famous transplants. They cost a lot.

The surgeon said scar revisions have a 90% success rate but idk. My scalp laxity has already returned so does that mean it's a good idea to try a revision, or do i just have stretchy skin and it will happen again? Their consent form said the scar shouldn't be more than 1-1.5mm and my previous scar was 1mm.

The scar is bad to deal with, but what Im really upset about is the srugeon had a tech do all the incisions on top without telling me, and now all those 2000 grafts have failed. THe surgeon transplanted the temple points himself and all those 800 grafts grew. The surgeon said I didnt have any conditions that would stop growth on top. I dont like how my surgery was handled and feel lost what to do next

That is a very over optimistic rate. It really comes down to the skill of the surgeon and the patient's genetics in wound healing. Have you considered having SMP in that scar and just grow your hair over it a little? You could also consider having beard grafts implanted in the scar. All the best!

When you say incisions, do you mean the incision points for the grafts to be placed or the placement of the actual grafts? Or both? I think in most clinics, the surgeon will do the incision points and then the technicians will do the actual placing of the grafts.

Are you sure you had 8,500 grafts? Do you have graft placement photos?

Yes they’re on the recomended list. North America.

The surgeon only made the incisions at the temple points and then left the rest of the incisions and graft placement to his tech. The clinic recently told me she is an MD and had worked there for 12 years, but the surgeon didn’t tell me any of this in pre-op and I’m really upset about it.

That 90% success rate with scar revisions might be possible with this surgeon tbh. I’ve seen one of their revisions and its AMAZING - it’s why I chose him. If I just had the scar to deal with I’d return to them without thinking, but I don’t like how my surgery was handled.

Yes I’ve had 8500 grafts (my bank account can sure confirm this), although I haven’t seen any growth on top from this surgery so I guess that’s why it still looks bad. I don’t want to share the clinic photos yet but basically all the gaps were filled in.

So do I fix the scar with a revision, SMP or grafts? Return to the clinic or not?
Why did the scar stretch so much this time - did the surgeon take too many grafts?

This is qui bono, also anotherbaldguy. Some of you may remember his detailed thread of Dr. Devroye he had me delete. Then he created one of Dr. Konior, now its Dr. Wong. I will be contacting @H & W Doug regarding these concerns.

There was another thread created used to pit Konior and Hasson where he posted under anotherbaldguy.

I have banned his duplicate account as this goes against our policy and terms of service. But I will be having these concerns addressed and this thread sent to the surgeon.

Once I have the surgeon comment on this case I will re-open the thread.
