Any hope for hair transplant

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, firstly just wanted to say great job on creating such an awesome forum which is jam packed with great info. I've really appreciated reading through everyone's experiences and have learnt tonnes from everyone here 🙂

A little about me... I'm 39 and have worn my hair grade 1 for about 7 years now... started receiving in late teens and was very thin and whispy by mid 20s.... by late 20s it was hardly possible to get a proper haircut. Needed about 4 more years to convince myself to shave it off and have rocked that look ever since. Never taken any medication and accepted I'd just have short hair for life... I'm kinda ok with it.

Recently have thought more of possibility of having a proper haircut again and started researching some FUE transplant procedures. Went to an in person consultation at ziering medical. Was advised donor area only can provide maybe 1500 grafts which would leave sparse coverage and still a very high hairline. Also had some email feedback from True and Dorin (based on pics) who stated I would not be a good candidate for hair transplant. Finally had whatsapp conversation with eugenix who proposed it possible to get upwards of 3200 grafts and would be feasible to get goo coverage for hairline and treat crown with medication.

So... that leaves me a little confused. Was just wondering if any feedback from this forum as to thoughts on feasibility? Hair is light brown and extremely fine... think that may be inhibiting good assement of current coverage and donor area.

Any thoughts welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

My 2 cents is if you can seriously find peace with having a buzzed-look, why bother fighting this battle. The risks and complexities of starting this HT journey can definitely outweigh the benefit.

Breest,

While I think your donor area is a bit on the thinner side, I would venture to guess that you have more than 1500 grafts available. That’s said, you do have extensive thinning and even 3200 grafts won’t provide you with a full head of hair. You could restore a conservative hairline with moderate density and fade into the center.  At the end of the day, you have to decide whether or not what can be provided will meet your expectations and make you happier. You will never be able to restore a full head of hair however, it could give you the cosmetic difference that you are looking for depending on your goals.

Best wishes,

Then stick with it and don't bother getting a HT.  You're definitely not a great candidate and it's almost certain you'd be underwhelmed with the results.

@Breest

I think there should be a stairway to Norwood Reversal as a sticky topic, but no one really bothers...

You are posting photos in this forum, which means you are interested in improving your situation. Contrary to what other people say, I am a big believer of hair loss reversal. Consider trying this plan:

1) Go to a dermatologist to get an evaluation. Doctors usually give you an DHT blood test, to see how much dht & free testosterone you have in your body. You are likely to be prescribed with a combination of finasteride & dutasteride, as well as minoxidil (fortified with azelaic acid, either 5%, or 10%).

2) On top of your medication, you can buy a cheap dermaroller off amazon (go for a low needle count, with 1-1.25mm length) and do it 2-3 times a week, but careful not to apply minoxidil on your freshly wounded scalp (wait for at least 30' before applying minoxidil).

3) You can also buy an LLLT cap, but these are expensive and they might not be as effective, but it always depends on your financial situation.

4) In the mean time, choose a good clinic, (there are amazing, affordable doctors in Spain & Portugal), because it usually take a couple of years to get a HT. In the meantime you will be gaining some ground, your hair will be thickening up and even your donor area will most likely improve if it is currently thin.

5) If you smoke please quit smoking and if you drink too much, please try to reduce that. If anything, it will only help you improve the situation and your lifestyle.

The average donor area has between 5K-6K follicles to provide for HTs, it is extremely rare for someone to only have 1K. I do believe you can get more than 3-4K after a couple of years of medication. You might as well ask your doctor to use body or beard hair to thicken up your central area & crown, where people do not care as much about the quality of hair. If a donor area is too thin, you may as well do micropigmentation to make it appear thicker. Consider these things, and when you do have a HT, post it here and let us compliment you 💪

It also helps you save money for the hair transplant since you won't be spending it on smoking and drinking.
